I'm in the camp that a 22 magnum fired from a 4in barrel revolver is a viable defensive weapon. I know there are better choices.
But 9 rounds of 22 WMR I believe is nothing to
take lightly. Most shootings happen at 5yrd or less. It's not a charge stopper, but neither is a 380, 9 or most any other handgun caliber unless you hit the CNS. The round will certainly penetrate to acceptable levels, bit expansion is in doubt.
I carry a 9 or 357 as my EDC. But I can see the Diminutive 22 WMR as a viable defensive weapon.

Agree...handguns, specifically short barrel ones, are a poor choice for self-defense, but long guns are really hard to conceal. As with any small firearm carried for defensive purposes..shot placement is of utmost importance.

You have a 9mm, which I would prefer over 22 mag.
Viable defensive weapon =/= Preferred defensive weapon
Anywhere 22 mag would be preferred to defend my life rather than (at least) 9mm? No. Nope. Negative.

22WMR is far lighter recoiling than many calibers. Combined with the weight of most 22WMR pistols, this givers a decided advantage to
less stronger people, over larger calibers. I agree with 357smallbore, 22WMR is a viable, though admittedly not superior, defense caliber.

So would you reject the 22 mag of it was the only gun available to use? I'm not saying it's the best to use. I'm saying it is underappreciated for what it's capable of doing.

Same goes for a .22 Long Rifle from a rifle length barrel. Your looking at similair numbers.

Both are actually fairly nasty. Some consider a .22LR rifle to be just a step above a Wal-Mart pellet rifle in terms of power.

Nothing could be futher from the truth and many will not believe you when you tell them some loads in .22LR can nearly meet the muzzle energy of a .380 ACP pocket pistol.
