I am planning on trying to get my first CC wepon and take the class with that gun. Any recomendations on what gun to carry - This should be a fun thread.

I prefer autoloader and and partial to a SIG but am prepaired to look at other brands. HElp turn my head from getting another SIG

You'll get 100 different responses. I like a G26 or Sprinfield XD9SC for warm weather and a commander sized 1911 for colder weather. Clear out a ton of drawer space for all the holsters you'll go through before you find one you like :p

i have a springfield XD .40 service, XD 9 SC and a bersa thunder .380.

The 9 and the .380 are switched off in the summer. I carry the .40 occasionally in winter but it's become the nightstand gun b/c of the tac light i got for it.

all are excellent...

I've fired a sig 226 in 9mm twice and LOVED it. seems a bit bulky for CCW to me, though.

taurus and bersa/firestorm have some nice, compact, reasonably priced guns for CCW, too.

Friend, you're going to get all kinds of suggestion and combinations. It's like the question of which is the best flavor of ice cream. Some like chocolate, some vanilla, I like Black Walnut and make home made cream several times a year; even in the winter. I carry a Ruger SP101 2 1/4" or Glock 21. Those two guns are on totally opposite ends of the spectrum with the exception they are both powerful rounds. Your going to get suggestions for airweights and the Ti Sc materials to all steel, nickel / stainless / blue different grip shapes and material .... on & on & on. Pick what fits you! There are a lot of good choices; platforms and calibres; it's what your comfortable with. I still shave with the old two sided balde safety razor. I don't think you can find the razor anymore and good blades are hard to find. But I'm an OLD FART.:what: Regards Pistol Toter

thanks for the help. I have a 226 so I need something smaller. Is .380 a decent round to carry? Dont mean to sound uninformed but I am on a few things. With so many rounds to choose from its a dificult task as well.

Another thing I recommend, since you are a bit of a rookie, get a full-size pistol. You don't already have pre-programmed notions about comfort and concealability. Comfort is relative, and if a sub-compact Glock is your first gun, it will feel uncomfortable. If a full-size 1911 is your first gun, it will also feel uncomfortable. A full-size handgun will have the highest capacity, the best sight radius, the more stable weight for shooting. The industry and the magazines will show you 4 different versions of the same pistol to do different jobs. I prefer to do them all with one, and compacts compromise performance.

Having said that, I carry a Kimber Custom II. If (when) I become wealthy, I might consider a Glock sub-compact or a para-ord Hawg-9 as a backup piece.

I 've had my SIG 226 going on 6 years and a Ruger .41 magnum for a litle shorter time. I have shot them quite a bit but only in the range out back. My rookyness is about EDCing a gun. Thats something I am not familiar with so I am looking to get steared into the right direction. I tend to look at full size guns so I am steering myself twords smaller EDC types as I am getting older and have a family to keep safe like trips and the like. I want an Conceal carry permit to feel like I am doing my part legally instead of throwing my 226 in the glove box. That aint a good example for my boy :) to see.....

me too...

I am in the same boat as you, except I have daughters in stead of sons. I don't have an answer except what others have said; you'll get every make and model on the market if this thread were allowed to go on that long. I too struggle with what to carry after I get my permit. I own and love a 1911 A1, and I know folks carry them. But that's 38 oz empty! And, here in FL I we have mowing season with a few weeks of windbreaker season in between. Therefore I rarely ever wear garments over my tucket in shirt. I would love a Kel Tec P32 because I know I could always have it with me. But, the .32 acp is not my first choice for self defense. Not intending to start a caliber war here, that's just my opinion. I am a little guy, and when I am out in public and see linebacker types I wonder, "what if he was charging me?" Would the 32 be enough? Now my intent with a cc piece would be to help me get out of a bad situation, not to stick around and save the world. But still, that little pill going into that big thug????? And what if there are multiple perps? Anyway, ramble ramble. Maybe your primary piece in the glove box is good, with a BUG in the pocket when you are outside of the car.

That's about like asking "Which rifle should I get?" with no other qualifiers.

How much are you looking at spending?

Do you have platform, manufacturer, or chambering preferences?

A little basic information would help...

Glock.

Hey, give a Glock an honest try. Pick whatever caliber you're really comfortable with and go for one of the smaller models (not the smallest one, get one big enough to fill your hand).

I'm an old M1911 guy and took a few law enforcement classes recently - and HAD to use a Glock 17 (full size 9mm). Son of a gun... it took just a little getting used to, since it certainly doesn't FEEL like a GI .45, but hey, it's certainly simple and reliable enough for a million or so law enforcement types.... and since a whole bunch of police agencies have unloaded one Glock or another according to departmental whims, you can count on getting one that's used for a decent price. Oh by the way - the officers teaching the law enforcement classes, including the armorer, attested to their real durability - and I'm talking "student pistols" that get LOTS of wear and abuse.

Oh, please don't get the .380.... get a little .40 if you need to go small... the little Glock .40 is controllable and a good compromise.

So.... I bought a couple and am happy with them.

So keep an open mind on plastic - it's not nearly so elegant as a SIG, but really worth a look for what you have in mind. Good luck.

Most handguns are concealable if you are willing to make some compromises. Do a little homework and find the best handgun for you. Then you will have the best concealed carry gun for you.

I will lok at a glock and I think the lowest I will go is 9mm.....

ps - I also have a 10 month old daughter who is too cute!!! My boy is cute too but he is 13 so I cant tell him that;)

I switch among four favorites:

1. Pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 629 .44 magnum with a three-inch barrel.

2. Colt Python with a 2.5-inch barrel.

3. Colt Python with a four-inch barrel.

4. Pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 60 .357 magnum with a two-inch barrel.

The Pythons, of course, are the classiest of the lot, and go better with cuff links and shined shoes. The .44 magnum is the most effective, but too heavy for the small of my back some days. The little J frame ends up being carried most often simply because it's the lightest and least bulky.

My favorites are a Kel-tec P11 (9mm) or P32 (32acp). These are guns I can carry anywhere. Up in size is my S&W 6946 which is my primary.

Model 60 J Frame 357 mag. Autoloader? I have yet to find the perfect one for day in day out concealed carry, none of anything I own is. I think that Springfield's new EMP might be close though, if it works.

Para's little CCO with the LDA trigger might be the best.

I carried Sig Pro 2009 for a couple years before I switched to a 1911.

Yes, it's a cannon, but it's actually slimmer and more comfortable IWB.

A lot of people who CCW start with full size guns start getting smaller and smaller ones for the convenience factor. If you are just going to run to the stop and rob at 10pm why strap on the 1911 when you can toss a g26 in your pocket and be out the door? It's all personal preference.
I consider the .380 marginal at best, but I wouldn't want to get shot with anything. What you need to worry about is the person on drugs who is intent on harming you. Will it be enough to physically immobilize him immediately if pain isn't a factor? I used to carry a .380 but moved to a 9mm for my least powerful carry gun.

XD .40 S&W subcompact with night sights(Primary)

I have a glock 17 9 mm also and carry it on occasion. In addition, I have a XD .45 acp tactical and I will carry it during winter months wearing heavy jackets.

This is the 9 mm, but it's the same size as the .40 S&W.

The compact and subcompact series of GLOCK pistols.

The subcompacts carry the best.
