Michael Savage (talk radio host) has been advertising Kel Tec recently. Good or bad?

Does having handguns advertised on publically broadcast radio represent a good or bad step for RKBA? Has any other celebrity done anything like this? It seems like an acceptable step of "renormalization" to me. Anyone likely to be offended is an anti anyways, at least that is what I hope. Until I heard the ads on his show, I had never really heard a gun ad on radio before. Now that may just be because I live in Illinois. But having this come from AM 560, a Chicago station where that product being advertised cannot legally be owned, it was a surprise. I don't have a link to the audio of the radio spot, but it basically is Michael Savage promoting a limited edition of the Kel Tec .380. Here is the associated web page:

What do you think of this? Good or bad? Possible side effects? Michael Savage tends to be a bit controversial.

Funny. He's a .45 ACP guy, AFAIK.

How could it be bad?

The first time I heard a gun store advertising on the radio here, with a musical jingle, I figured that firearms were now "mainstream" again. The blissninnies won't be as scared, if they're used to hearing commercials that are no more frightening than ads for tampons.

It's a question of who's using whom. I don't think it helps the RKBA much to be appropriated by the extreme right AM contingent. Savage himself is not much of a shooter and AFAIK his background is as something of a beatnik in San Francisco and natural foods guru.

I'd much rather see Tom Selleck or Sam Elliot get more outspoken on the issue, though of course Tom found out what happens to celebs who fail to toe the line on such matters. And I think putting your name on a line of firearms is kind of tacky.

Ideally it helps us to make firearms as politically neutral as possible, with both sides of the aisle leaving the matter alone with no legislation of any kind. That's the way it was for a long time, at least on the federal level. Making the RKBA an aspect of an extreme right wing agenda is not going to help broaden gun rights, though it may help the far right a little.

I thought it was cool when I heard the ad. I would love to hear ads from more gun manufacturers.

Have you ever listened to this guy? He's a first class pompous arse and is as bad for the right as Janeane Garofalo is for the left. Savage is not the guy I would look to to reassure America that gun ownership is a mainstream, responsible and proper thing to do.

FWIW, Michale Savage is most definitely not "High Road" material.

Hello Infidels!!

I carry a Kel Tec everyday. I WAS planning on buying another P11 sometime in the future, BUT after hearing this, I think I'll definitely have to buy one quicker than planned.:D

I've listened to Savage. Very entertaining sometimes. Tedious at others. He seems to me to sort of an old fashioned traditionalist who is against both big government and big business. Interesting mix. More "libertarian" than anything else, but he believes in our armed services. He is not necessarily what I would call a "conservative" as used these days, and definitely not a "Republican", but he probably is "extreme." Extreme what, I'm not sure. Perhaps "extremely abrasive" is most accurate. He regularly bashes Limbaugh, Hannity, et al. But any mainstreaming of self-defense pistols is a good thing, IMO.

I am holding out for the Rush a matic 45. Comes in nickel and 14K gold. But it's ok to get exposure where you can, when in business.

Michael Savage and his radio hosts offer advertising for companies on their show for a fee. Kel-tech is a company who whats to buy advertising. That is how the free market works. So its a good thing right? I hope Kel-tech sees a nice ROI.

Kel-Tec Website said:
KEL-TEC and MICHAEL SAVAGE bring you the Collectible Limited Edition “FREEDOM” Firearm.
In Honor of the 2nd Amendment, there will only be 5000 of these Commemorative Limited Edition Firearms produced.

This special P3AT FREEDOM edition is brought to you by Kel-Tec & Michael Savage with the quality craftsmanship and attention to detail that is unlike any other. The Kel-Tec P3AT Freedom limited edition is stamped with the word ‘FREEDOM’ and is dated December 15, 1791, the ratification of the Bill of Rights.
Each firearm is individually numbered to ensure the integrity of the series. And only 5000 numbered copies plus proof will be available. This is a very limited once in a lifetime series and once they are gone it will not be repeated again.

THE FREEDOM P-3AT

The FREEDOM P-3AT is a semi-automatic, locked breech pistol, chambered for the .380 Auto cartridge. It has been developed from our highly successful P-32 pistol with negligible increase in weight and size. The slidestop has been eliminated and the magazine capacity reduced to 6 rounds due to the larger cartridge.

The firing mechanism is double action only. The magazine has a 6 round capacity. The FREEDOM P-3AT is the lightest .380 Auto pistol ever made. Thanks to its locking dynamics and superior ergonometry, perceived recoil and practical accuracy are comparable to much larger guns.

The FREEDOM P-3AT is mainly intended for plainclothes police officers as a secondary weapon, or for concealed carry by licensed citizens. The small grip size and light trigger pull make the P-3AT ideal for female shooters.

I'll admit that I'm not a Savage fan....heck, about 5-8 years ago I used to call his show just to push his buttons.

HOWEVER.....that KelTec P3AT is sweet....I want one! If they skipped the CT laser and went with a set of very low profile tritium night sights, I'd like it even better.

I say the more mainstream firearms talk is, the better...so kudos to him for advertising KT. Even if I think the guy is utterly loony, he deserves a cookie for this.

Savage isnt exactly extreme right wing IMO.

Weapons manufacturers still have to make that dollar, so endorsing a radio host with a large audience to push Special Edition pistols is a good idea from a marketing standpoint.

I'd rather not have an unhinged, irrational wingnut like Michael Savage being used as the face for RKBA, but no one asked me.

The font they picked for the engraving on the side of those guns is absolutely hideous. Unreadable "Olde English" script like that is just eye-stabbingly bad to look at. Also, it has at least two negative connotations that I can think of: the font is evocative of either WWII-era Germany, or Latino criminal gangs.

Michael Savage is a bit noxious to my ears, though I do support his overall credo: Language, Borders, Culture. Much to be said for that. He's often much more harsh with callers than he needs to be to make his point, and I'd never consider calling except maybe to talk guns-which he's afraid to do these days....

I have a P3AT, and like it enough to carry daily. No lasergrip on it, though I have some on a 1911 and like them... Anyone else have the CT on their P3AT? If so, how do you like 'em?

Exactly my thoughts on both points.

As usual, Justin beat me to the punchline.

That said, if Kel-Tec believes they can sell a lot of guns to the sort of people who are fans of Savage, it inspires me to buy more guns for myself, as a reciprocal gesture. Détente, if you will. An arms race.

I think it's good. Whether or not you like his show, getting firearms more mainstream is a good thing, and chances are the people who hate his show/him aren't going to hear that ad anyway since they aren't listening.
There's another talk show host, I forget which (Glen Beck maybe?) who is advertising for Front Sight for a concealed carry training course at some sort of discount. Again, anything that gets RKBA out in the public and more "normal" is good. Besides, it's probably smart marketing. I'd bet a good percentage of the folks who drove the post-election gun buying frenzy are more likely to listen to conservative talk radio than NPR or other left-leaning mainstream media.

Then again, maybe I just plain like hearing or seeing gun ads. The ads for crimson trace, Springfield, Speer, etc. during the shooting shows on the sportsman and outdoor channels are great.

As for the pistol itself I agree with Justin. I also hate pocket clips and would rather see it come with one of those desantis pocket holsters made for the P3AT with the CT laser than a pocket clip. I know gun's don't "go off" unless the trigger is pulled (and i carry a glock and P3AT so i'm not against the gun style) but I also think they should be carried with a round chambered and if the gun has no external safety why tempt fate, cover the triggerguard!
At least it's an American gun company selling a gun built in the USA!

I definitely won't be buying a KT anytime soon because of this. And I *was* about to purchase two rifles from them (sub2k and su-22). It's a pretty dumb advertising hook-up for them (the limited edition gun).

Hah. Maybe they thought that a borderline right extremist's audience would be into buying firearms. So, appealing to people that are willing to buy your product is bad business? Alot of the arguments in this thread are laughable; this simply is a gun company acknowledging their market- not making a political stance.

Hah. It's bad business to alienate a large part of your possible customer base. The other guys are already aware of what's going on. I don't care as much if they advertise during his show, but this limited-edition run means a much closer tie-in with that lunatic.

So they sell 5000 of these handguns... If they alienate a couple thousand potential customers, who were already planning on buying a couple of more expensive (and more profitable) weapons as I was, then they blew it.
