I don't understand the rash of .380 pistols today.

There is a rash of .380 pistols being made because lots of men and women are buying them. Some folks are using them for their EDC. Other folks who carry a bigger handgun 90% of the time will buy one to carry the other 10% of the time, when there clothing just won't conceal anything else. Or some folks carry both a bigger handgun and a smaller .380 pistol at the same time. Add all that up, that is a lot of folks buying .380 pistols.

Well, the OP makes one mistake that explains this lack of understanding. .380 handguns are that much smaller than 9x19 that it does make a significant difference.

Small gun size explains the popularity. There are tons of places that are anti-gun enough that ultra-deep concealment is a requirement. I would bet that 3/4 of employers in US have policies prohibiting carry. Most people would choose their job over carrying a bigger gun.

My SIGPRO is up for sale right now because having even minor arthritis (which will get worse with time) makes it very difficult to field strip this 9MM. :banghead:

My next pistol will be a .380..........and I will carry OWB.
can we all say "placement"??? :what:

Being trained by the ARMY during the SE ASIA fiasco placed heavy emphasis on bullet placement, even while carrying a holstered BERETTA .45.

NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY wants to stand in front of any projectile because they ALL do damage. Having said that, I can't wait to get my new .380, there are some awesome guns on the market.........
not to mention some very lethal .380 ammo.

I carry only 9mm and at least 12 at all times with one in the pipe.

Today its more about a legal shooter stopping a illegal shooter did you see the news today:(

Lowest cals i will ever carry 9mm and 38 spl, i do have to say i want a PMR-30 but it can't be carried so ***.

For those of you who still own or want to buy a 380 take a look at this video

I lived less than a 1/4 mile away when that shootout took place in South Miami.......BUT...........

Even though the bad guys have automatic .30 calibers (I'm guessing) with 20-30 rounds in the mags still died from an FBI .38! :what:

The .38 shooter survived..........a miracle that he did!

I'll take 30+1 rounds of .22 mag over your silly 9mm cut short any day. Also i will be actual able to shoot my gun because the prices on 380 is ridiculous

If I join the FBI or any LE agency I'll leave my .380 at home. What a crock.

As to the OP's question?
With the rapid expansion of concealed carry over the past few years, many people buy .380 pistols. Firearms manufacturers would be idiotic to not supply a variety of .380's to meet this demand. Same reason there are so many 1911 style and Colt SA guns out there. Because people buy them.

My wife has carpal tunnel syndrome so racking the slide is an issue. I got her a Walther PK380 (and some HD rounds). She was able to operate the weapon and effectively engage targets right out of the box. She was unable to rack any of the others that we tried.

That's a cool gun, but it's HUGE compared to the .380s in question. If you're going to carry that, might as well carry a full sized gun in a real caliber.

The advantage to the .380 is simply the size of the gun. I have a 9mm Walther PPS and a Ruger LCP. I wouldn't get rid of either one. My LCP in a Recluse holster fits in my back pocket and just looks like my wallet. My PPS is very concealable for most things, but I sure can't carry it like that.

Weight fully loaded, approximate, 19.6 ounces.............

LCP unloaded, At just 9.40 ounces (with an empty magazine). you would rather have 7 or 8 rounds of 380 vs 30+1 of .22 mag

At least when you draw your pmr 30 and fire your going to kill the bad guy with just the shock of the blast. Put your 380 to shame, heres a IE you have a 380 i have a pmr 30 who is going to win?

Size is the reason for all the mini 380 autos. It is a prefectly viable defense round. The trend is to smaller and smaller CCW guns. The 380 is IMHO the smallest round that is viable. This is the reason everyone has developed a mini 380.

To me it is the same reason you saw "everyone" develop a little 38 Special snub nose.

Yours is about the most juvenile argument I've heard in a while. If you're able to conceal a PMR-30, you can certainly conceal a mid-sized auto in a more potent cartridge, like an Officer's length 1911 or maybe even a Commander. Weight has nothing to do with it.

Fact is that there is a huge niche filled by the pocket pistol and the .380 is the largest auto cartridge that fits into one. Sometimes you simply can't conceal more gun, sometimes you just don't want or need to. When I was a field tech, my company had a strict policy against concealed carry so I had to carry small and deep. A KelTec P-32 filled that need nicely.

380 pistols are very popular because the new breed are true pocket guns. They will completely disappear in all but the tightest pants/shirt/jacket pocket.

I love mine and carry it way more often than the larger guns.

As for the purported lack of stopping power of the 380 cartridge, who says you only get to shoot one shot? If I'm truly stopping a threat, you better believe I'm pulling the trigger a few times.

i agree with the above sentiment. I don't understand. If you hit a person with a 380 and they don't stop, i don't see how it's likely that a 9mm would have done you any better. People seem to think "oh man, if only you had a 9mm that bad guy wouldn't keeled over and falling in his tracks instead of being able to stumble forward and hurt you because you shot him with a 380".

People are just drawing arbitrary lines

Further, with a shootable 380, you can reacquire so much faster if you miss.

People are likely to go down because you hit something important, not because you penetrated their shoulder a few inches more.

Shock of the blast?

Anywho, it's the indian, not the arrow that wins the fight.

Comparing the pmr30 to a pocket 380 is like comparing a metal saw and a wood saw. Different tools for different purposes buddy.
