I voted Ruger, but I've got S&W's, Springfield's, Para's, Armscor, and half a dozen other brands that all seem to work equally well or I would have traded them off. My favorite gun is a .380 FEG APK, but it's a "fun gun", not a "work gun".
This really changes from time to time. I gun have not let go off even after 18000+ rounds is the second generation Glock 19 made in USA. But If I ask myself today which one gun I would keep, it would be some 1911. Tomorrow I might feel diferently, a few days back when I went to 'hairy' place ways out of my locale, I would not even thing of 1911- capacity issue. I felt that while I was there, in fact, a handgun in general seemed like pretty useless unless a last ditch effort back up. I was carrying 15+1 P30 by HK and a NFA item I care not to discuss.
COME ON MAN!

Overall I'd say an HK product. The HK45 or the USP Tactical 45.
I wouldn't feel undergunned if I had to pick a Glock, a Sprinfield XD, a Walther, or a CZ. I'd take a Smith or a Ruger if that's all that was available. I wouldn't mind a Taurus if I could take it out and test it first, make sure it was one of the good ones (I'm not a fan of their "lottery" style of gun-making, you get a good one and they work forever, or you get a crap one and it gets sent back to Taurus to sit on a shelf forever.)
