5.56 Home Defense Ammo

A Ruger 10/22 loaded with 25 rds of CCI stingers is just as effective in close range SD. Of course its not ideal but will kill someone that fast.

No. It is not.

BTW: I wouldn't recommend 25 round mags for defensive 10/22 use, the factory rotary 10 rounders are universally more reliable.

I also wouldn't recommend Stingers. A fast lightweight hollow point is the last choice to make on something with marginal penetration.

Nathan,

If you read the previous posts several people have made it known that they don't know the difference between opinion and fact.

I for one will not stand in front of a 10/22 loaded with 25 CCI Stingers. That is a fact :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

The fact is that CCI Stingers in .22lr are not as effective at reliably stopping attackers as a 12 gauge or 5.56 or a centerfire handgun 9mm or above. (assuming the operator can get reasonable hits with whatever they use)

You need to understand that proclaiming something to be an opinion doesn't make it not-wrong.

9 rounds of 5.56 are going to be far more effective than a single shell of buckshot, and either are going to be far more effective than CCI Stingers.

I for one will not stand in front of a Red Ryder BB gun with 1 BB in in. That is a fact.

One of my Mom's favorite stories is about .22LR. In the 60's My Aunt had a drunkard for a husband, he was also a lowlife wife beater. My Aunt had went to stay at Grandma and Grandpa's after a particularly terrible week of being beaten. That night he came calling and my Grandpa was out of town. He kicked in the door and my Grandma met him with Grandpa's Remington Nylon 66 at the stairs on the first landing. He said he was going to kill her if she didn't move and that my Aunt would get it worse for making him come to get her.

Grandma was 5'5" and weighed maybe 100 pounds, she didn't back down though. She told him she would shoot if he came any closer and that the police were on the way. He reiterated his threat and started up the stairs. She pulled the trigger at maybe 6-10 feet. He continued up the stairs seemingly unfazed. He knocked my Grandma down, my Mom who was the second line of defense, had come to her aid and handed her an iron which she then hit him in the head with a few times before he went limp. The cops showed up at the very end of the altercation, as the saying go's "when seconds count the police are only minutes away".

While examining his headwound the police noticed the bleeding spot on his abdomen. This dirtbag had been gut-shot with a 40gr .22LR and kept coming. The bullet had made it all the way through from the abs, stomach, and to the muscle in his lower back. While in the hospital he told the cops what he had done and was promptly charged with felony assault. My Grandpa taught my Grandma to use his 1911 after this, he didn't want to take a chance with her using a .22LR again. My Aunt did divorce that scumbag after this incident, where he is now, who knows.

I could use 5.56, 7.62x39 and x54, 12 gauge, .45 ACP, 9mm, or hell .44 magnum as a choice. If all I had was .22LR then yes, I would use it. You can bet that I would be picking up something bigger as soon as I could. Sorry for the long post but I thought this story that I've heard a 1000 times should be shared. My loved ones are my world. I wouldn't chance their lives with .22LR, especially after hearing this story from my Mom, Grandma, and Aunt.

I just did some crude expansion (fragmentation?) and velocity testing of some Hornady 75 grain Match ammo today....this is 223, not 5.56, because I cannot find any 5.56.

Fired from a Sig 516...16" barrel, 1 in 7" twist.

10 shots averaged 2,512 fps, and very much went "ballistic" in milk jugs...shredded the first 2 jugs, the 3rd one was leaking pretty good...only thing left of the bullet was fragments.

These were the first bullets over 62 grains that I have ever fired in an AR...I was surprised at the recoil...I'm not saying it hurt, LOL...just that it was different, and more than I'm used to from an AR.

Those 10 rounds completely sold me on the heavy OTM bullets for HD...I'm all in.

Interesting comment about recoil.

I don't think I've ever been able to tell a difference in recoil no matter what I used. And I definitely never noticed increased recoil when shooting .223.

I understand it completely. M193 is a terrible self defense choice compared to modern 223/556 cartridges. I really don't get your point. My point was to point out that m193 is a poor choice.

M193 is my choice for home defense.

For SHTF, I handload Nosler 60gr Partition (in case I have to shoot into cars).
