AR as home defense: two specific questions

I ripped through a 30 round mag out of a 16 inch AR in a tiny little concrete basement room once.

Uhm..... why? what would possibly make you want to do that to yourself? I can't even imagine the permanat damage that was done to your hearing bro.... Ouch... just thinking about that make  my ears ring....

Here's an idea, get an AR in 9mm. Use factory Colt SMG magazines for defense, and the more affordable promags or notched UZI mags for plinking.

I havent fired an AR in 9mm, but I would imagine it would be a lot quieter than .223, and not so unpleasant indoors.

Much younger and stupider. :) I'm religious about my hearing protection now.

A shotgun with OO buckshot (birdshot still punches through dry wall but gives poor penatration on heavy clothes or heavily built people) has a tremendous amount of stopping power @ ranges that you would have in a house. The .223 at in house ranges pales in comparsion as to stopping power at that range period. I'm not an expert but listen closely to those that are and I know not a single one that would argue that. As far as being able to do alot of things under a survival situation then many would go to the AR or a rifle but for CQB shotgun is king hands down period. They (leo trainers, top schools and trainers) teach alot of double taps and such with AR's for CQB not with the shotgun and that tells you alot. Personally inside of 50 yards I'd still take a buckshot/slug over a .223. Then I'd go to a .308 for shots out in rifle country. Save the money get a shotgun & training for house duty.

My ideal "house gun" is currently in process. An 11.5" AR-15 (Colt A1 upper, Stag lower, CMT internals, white light) with a SRT Typhoon or Hurricane suppressor on the end. With the Typhoon it'll measure under 16", and the suppressor will bring the noise just under the level where hearing damage would occur. The odds of my ever having to use it indoors without additional hearing protection is extremely tiny, and if the police take it for twelve months, I can live without it.

My understanding is that 5.56mm ammo, especially the 55gr and 45gr stuff, penetrates interior walls but retains less lethal energy than shotguns or pistols through the same barrier.

Currently waiting on the Form 1 for my SBR build. It's due "any day now." Then I can start on a suppressor.

What experts say that? If the shotgun is king, hands down, period for CQB, how come the shotgun has been relegated to use for breaching and less lethal munitions with virtually everyone in the business?

Modern CQB means fairly precise shooting. The rifle is king of CQB. Many police departments that still use shotguns in patrol cars are limiting them to slug only.

But we are getting off topic here. The subject was ARs.

Modern CQB is about fast response, in my opinion. Precise shooting is very necessary, but if the other guy can put a round in you faster than you can put a double tap inbetween his eyeballs...

A full length AR15 is not the ideal weapon for clearing houses. In a pinch it'll work. Then again, in a pinch, you gotta use whatever you have handy. A shortened suppressed AR15 will do the job very well, of course. But I argue that a full length unsuppressed AR15 is not the ideal choice for a variety of reasons. If it's what you have and want, it can do the job. I just recommend one obtains training and points a healthy amount of rounds downrange.

A shotgun is the best weapon for someone clearing a place without a healthy amount of training. As more than a few folks have said, "The original point and click interface." The amount of training one has very much can define the "ideal" weapon.

Then again, my prefered weapons for clearing are not considered politically correct these days. A good SMG and a lot of grenades. Then again, I used to be partial to an AK folder with an IR laser and a good set of NVG's. Both worked rather well, depending on circumstances.
