I chose 357 because I believe what you shoot most/best is the correct choice. Mine would be in a 16" lever carbine, and I'd be good in every senerio where I live, as I'm in the south and we don't have big bear.... the stock is super short and it's super compact and maneuverable. I'd feel slightly undergunned in the wild with a revolver 4-6" but I'd still take that caliber in pistol.

As much as I love my M1911s in .45 ACP, my "One Gun Fits All" would probably be a 9mm. pistol. Would choose between an HK VP9, SIG M18, Browning Hi-Power, or a Glock G48.

I am making the assumption that said weapon must have some concealment capabilities, which limits long gun options.

A good 4” DA/SA .357 Mag revolver is probably my best choice for all of those scenarios, but honorable mentions can be made for good .44 Mag or .45 Colt with access to a variety of load levels.

I was thinking on the street ment truck gun or a lot of the selections won't work. Like 300wm 🤣

My first thought was a 12 gauge shotgun but on the street or in the woods it might not reach out far enough. I chose the .44 magnum personally since I have a revolver, a lever action carbine, and a lever action rifle. Of those three,
I would choose the carbine if I had to choose only one.

I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this survey. No .223, 300 BO, or 7.62*39 and no .40
S&W.

If my 1 gun was a pistol, I’d have a hard time not taking my G23 in .40

If a long gun, an AR or my AR hybrid, 5.56 or 7.62*39

I don’t see bolt action rifles making sense anywhere but maybe in the woods…

The inclusion of "in the wild" means 44 magnum at a minimum just for the very low probability of bear defense. "On the street" means something at least plausibly concealable, so a long is out. In a lot of states, if you tote an AR in public, you'll get swatted. Home defense is wide open, so the previous two parameters are all that matter. Thus...Some version of a 44 magnum revolver. These days, I'd lean toward the 329PD scandium frame just to make it marginally possible to carry it EDC.

Actually, this Christmas will be a little different... I'm carrying my SA-35 HiPower instead of my usual Kahr CW9 (although that will be in the truck, too.) We will be traveling across NM and AZ, to NV, and with the border wide open, I feel a little better with the HiPower. I'll be carrying it in the desert as well, when I go out... but I will also have my trusty LRB/RRA AR-15, because 2 is 1, and 1 is none, and particularly out in the middle of nowhere.

Looking pretty in the High Noon Slide Guard...

........that would mean not only SD/HD, but defense against Dangerous Game and large Predators with more than 2 legs. This is why I ain't a fan of one gun for everything. Because one gun is not for everything. What I wear for defense when my wife and I go out to eat sure as 'ell ain't gonna be the same when I go out in the woods pickin' blueberries.

The question is not really what one gun but what one caliber. Because of ubiquitous availability, many - many platforms, and capability of the round I chose the front running 9mm. Realistically I would not be hunting tigers and bears.

So, in considering which gun - a PCC seems to be in order as the optimal, all around Wilds, HD, and SP choice.

If it’s one caliber rather than one gun, I still would chose .357.

A S&W K-frame .357 revolver along with a scoped Rossi 92 lever action in the same caliber would suit my needs in my present location.
