A new respect for the .22 lately.

The .22lr is a great cartridge. I absolutely love it.
I won't use it for SD because I want to use a caliber that will stop an attack quickly. I don't have faith in the .22 to stop an attacker with less than 5 or 6 rounds. .22lr kills lots and lots and lots of people each year. Usually pretty slowly.
However, for a walking around my parents land, for shooting fun at the range, for bulding fundamentals, and for teaching new shooters, the .22 is king. I don't think any gun owner should be without a .22 handgun.
Heck if you took a bunch of anitgunners to the range and only shot .22lr, I bet you could convert quite a few. .22 is fun.
I really want a .22 revolver just for kicks.

BATFE is gonna be lookin for that guy like a hobo and a ham sandwich.

Why? He's only selling information. Information is still legal, you know. Anyone can go into a public library and get information on how to build an atomic bomb, but unless they get the plutonium, the info is worthless. Same thing with full-auto weapons. Getting or making the necessary parts will be the tough part.

Wow, the following story isn't even about using a "high" capacity .22, but a lowly single action 5 shot NAA revolver which in my mind would be for much of anything but very close emergency shooting. But, the .22 did the job against multiple targets. What is neat to read about is how real people reacted to getting shot with a .22.

That impressive shooter was weilding a .22 magnum, much more potent than a .22lr. In fact the rimfire magnum is damn close to 5.7 potent.

Back in the day, the old saying was that the .22 had killed more people than all other calibers combined. I don't know if that was or is still true, but it makes sense to me.

Elkyote - what the heck IS that?

Wow. That barrel must have been just about red hot, squeezing off the whole mag without stopping.

It is an open bolt FA upper for the AR, 275 round drum. It is "not a weapon" in the eyes of the ATF, but I believe that it needs a M16 FA to be installed on to. But I don't care who you are, I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of that firehose (that you can actually aim :)).

Unfortunately the .22 mag out of a 1 1/2 inch barrel does not offer much gain over the .22 LR. The short barrel is one handicap, the other is the .22 magnum is a rifle round, and is loaded with a slightly slower burning powder.

Taking a NAA revolver with both cylinders, .22LR and .22 magnum, I found about 3/8ths of an inch difference in penitration in a wet phone book. Plus the .22 magnum had way more muzzle flash, noise, and recoil. Since the .22 magnum is more difficult to handle, I don't bother putting the magnum cylinder in it anymore.

But the Boars gun should be sent back to NAA for examination. This is very unusual for anything like this to happen. Some of my friends have them, and when we make a range trip, we do take along the mini revolvers to finish up with for a few rounds. I've never heard of one failing, let alone blowing up. I've had mine since 1986.

A .22 is not a great defense round if you want one of those mythical one shot stops. But it is a dangerous round, and if it makes the assault stop, is that not the goal? Most criminals, being the cowards that they are, run at the first few shots.

Using a 4 inch 617 loaded with the same CCI ammo, the bullets went right through the same thickness phone book. Surprising what a few more inches of barrel does.

A 22lr has as much energy as other small pistol cartridges and out penetrate most of them as a pistol round. The 22 mag has more energy than anything
less than a .38 special. I'd rather carry a 22lr than a .25 or .32 for sure. Some hole stole my pocket .22.

Update, I was going to buy a Ruger single six with both 22lr and 22 mag cylinders today but a Walther P1 for the same price tempted me away.

Beretta, .semi auto, 22 : ENTERING: thru a dresser drawer(one side) thru wall of 1/2 plaster board, thru 3/8" latts with plaster inbetween.

EXITED: 1/2 dry wall into my leg and it's still there! Another 1/16 of an inch to the right and Dr said it would have shattered my shin bone!

So much for lacking penetration from a dimiuntive 22 !!!!!!!!!

After I've expended all my .357, .38 special, .44 special, .44 magnum, .45 ACP, and 9mm ammo, and I'm still around and there are still zombies/ irradiated bikers/ gangbangers/ etc., trying to have their way -- I'll be grateful for the several bricks of .22's and multiple handguns and rifles chambered for them to keep up the good fight... :)

.22 is by far and away my favorite caliber but I sure isn't my first choice if something goes bump in the night.

While bowhunting this fall, I happened upon a opossum as it was getting dark. Not being a big fan of opossums near my camping area, I decided to knock him off. I was carrying my Buckmark (7'' barrel) and took aim as he was climbing up a tree. The first shot hit him square in the face, at about 15 yards. I walked up to see if he was down/retrieve him so my uncle could eat him (opossum isn't my list of edibles though), and he was still walking around! I put another shot into his chest at about 5 feet. I figured he was done, and that I would come collect him after the sun had set.

After about half and hour, I came back. He was sitting upright licking his paws and face! Also having a propensity to shooting zombies, I fired 5 more times. He was still "breathing" (could have been the death dance though). Anyway, I lost confidence in the .22 in anything over squirrels and rabbits. I have seen many squirrels shot with .22 rifles that still have plenty of life left in them, especially if it was a poor shot that was in the lower half of the body.

A postmortem inspection of the zombie/opossum relieved the first shot to the head glanced off and didn't hit anything important. I suppose the six to the lungs did though.....

I won't be whacking any opossums for a while. .22 is my favorite caliber and it is very reliable out of bolt, revolver, and singleshots, but isn't the best caliber for SD. I figure a little Beretta is decent but for the same size you can get a kel-tec in .32 or .380. A little harder to shoot but way more potent and at least sounds like a gun going off. This is also coming from somebody that thinks people who carry full-size pistols are crazy. If/when I get a CCW, it will likely be a j-frame or a little kel-tec.

I give the .22 respect, just as any other round in this world, if you turn your back on it, it can and will kill you. I won't ever be caught saying "a .22 isn't a real rifle" or "its just a little baby round."

I find both to be pretty bad descriptions for something so deadly.

I have the big bore centerfire rifles and pistols. I also have a Ruger 10/22 with a quality 25 round mag, folding stock in the bedroom closet. It may only be a .22 but I would hate to face that thing on the wrong end.

.22s have always been great for learning and mastering the fundamentals of shooting and for maintaining proficiency.

HB: IIRC, the answer to "What gun for 'possums?" is "Ford, Chevy or Chrysler."

How many people have been shot by .22s -- a whole lot. Some have died from it and some have not. Same could be said for just about any mainstream cart.

I have been shot twice with .22RFs and I HAVE GREAT RESPECT for the lowly .22.

I've never heard ANYONE complain about being shot by a "too small" gun/bullet !!!!!

I sure would not want to be shot by a person with a .22lr pistol that can aim and shoot. If you can find a guy that can take a few of them right up the air intake and walk off I want to see that guy as he is probably related to a T-34 tank.

Last I checked, the majority of people that were killed with a firearm in the U.S. were killed with a .22 rimfire of some sort. Most of those died later, in the hospital or on the way. The .22 is deadly, but not particularly quick to kill.

I want the best compromise of power, accuracy, and concealability that I can find. I doubt that it is a .22.

I have seen statistics in some of my classes and the 22lr, 25 auto, and 32 probably kill more than the next top 10. But you also have to look that Ruger alone has sold north of 5 million 10/22s and they still sell like hotcakes. Availability is a big thing, but you can also buy 4-5 22lrs for the price of a decent 9mm so that factors in to.
