The .22lr is a great cartridge. I absolutely love it.
I won't use it for SD because I want to use a caliber that will stop an attack quickly. I don't have faith in the .22 to stop an attacker with less than 5 or 6 rounds. .22lr kills lots and lots and lots of people each year. Usually pretty slowly.
However, for a walking around my parents land, for shooting fun at the range, for bulding fundamentals, and for teaching new shooters, the .22 is king. I don't think any gun owner should be without a .22 handgun.
Heck if you took a bunch of anitgunners to the range and only shot .22lr, I bet you could convert quite a few. .22 is fun.
