Advice on cheaper ammo / weapon

The ideal is to have the same manual of arms and ergonomics as your current handgun in a .22. That can be achieved by getting the Sig .23 conversion kit already mentioned. The $300 expense of getting the .22 conversion kit may offset the amount of ammunition used in a reasonable period of time, but over a few years it should pay for itself and increase the amount of shooting time spent in practice.

Look at the costs associated with moving from your current handgun to a 9mm and the costs of 9mm ammo for a year vs. the $300 expense of the conversion kit or a $250 Ruger.

"Get a SIG .22 slide for your P220 and you'll love your gun all over again."

Oh, never thought of that. That's really interesting.... Makes sense though.

Lots of help again... Thanks

As always, you guys (gals?) are GREAT. This is by far my favorite place to go for gun advice.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my original post. I have NO INTENTION WHATSOEVER of getting rid of my Sig P220 Sport .45. I love it, and I will someday leave it to the one of my sons who'll best take care of it (probably my oldest who's in Air Force Special Forces and has both a professional and personal interest).

I'm shooting around 120 rounds per month (I know, not a lot), but I imagine that going up to 150 rounds per month or so if I get a second gun. The .22 slide for my P220 is intriguing, but (am I crazy or just immature?) the idea of shooting .22 ammo from my Sig is just not very appealing to me. My guess is, after calculating the increased shooting but different mix of ammo, (and after reading your fine advice), I'll probably save around $150 per year in ammo costs (if I go with a 9 mm) AND shoot more AND get a new gun. Sure, it'll take a few years for the savings to even out the cost of the new gun, BUT I GET TO BUY ANOTHER GUN!

It seems, based upon your responses that, with this approach, 9 mm is the way to go. What 9 mm would you recommend given that I don't wish to spend the kind of money I spent on my Sig? Also, how does one find trustworthy sources for police trade-ins?

^^^^^ Put a smile on my face when I tried it out the first time. My .22 slide is not a tack driver but it's fairly accurate at close range.

Plus it's easy to swap with the same takedown.

Even my 12 year old daughter had fun plinking at a scarecrow. She likes the Kimber .22 1911 better but I believe it's because of the narrower grip. The P220 in DA is a tad too wide, even for me.

SIG Sauer had the slide for sale a couple of weeks ago for $260 I believe. Can't remember the price from the email. I got mine from Going Quiet, a fellow member here.

Well if you're used to SIG, the 226 in 9 mm is a no-brainer. Unless you just want to try something new.

I have a Blackwater 226 (and a Blackwater 1911 too- yeah I know). Great gun. Same ergonomics. I also have a .22 converter for that but am having fit issues that will likely require a smith since I don't want to damage my frame.

As far as other 9mm, the Browning HP, CZ75 and Beretta M9 are top contenders.
