Annual round count? Daily average?

It seems like many people here are able to shoot more often than I do with many talking about taking their EDC weekly or at least monthly. Then others are into the sporting games like 3-gun or something. The impression I get is that it is fairly common for people to go through 10,000 rounds a year, and that's well above mine. I'm curious to see what a more realistic average is.

How often do you shoot and how much?

I'm fortunate to have access to a private range that belongs to someone from our church. With the weather warming up here I'll be there 2 to 4 times a month and can easily go through 500 rounds per trip. I'll do that usually until the end of October, at which point I'll go 1 to 2 times a month and shoot 200-300 rounds per trip. Fortunately I reload and am very well stocked, as I'm probably pretty close to 10,000 rounds a year.

There have been years when I did not pull a single trigger. There have been years - competition years - when I approached 100,000 rounds downrange.

So far this year I have burned about 5,000 rounds, which is quite a lot for me these days: I have been working with a couple of new defensive handguns. I really have turned into a blackpowder shooter over the past decade or so, and a couple of outings per month may represent only two hundred rounds, and even less when I am primarily focused on flintlocks.

Overall, I suppose I've burned up enough ammo for one lifetime and no longer worry about getting in a certain number. One of my most recent shooting sessions was a side trip on the way to somewhere else: a mile drive off the highway, twice around the cylinder, and back on the road. Those twelve rounds were all I wanted or needed.

Just to keep the thread going: Try to shoot EDC weekly plus my 1911 (all 45ACP). About 32 rounds through EDC (timed drill) then for pleasure ~20 to 25 rounds thru 1911 for a total count of 2,500 rounds per year which does not include any 22LR or 223 which might account for another 1,000 rounds for fun. Would/could be more but our club range has been closed to the big California rains (state highway closed until the fall of 2023). Now am shooting at the local indoor range which is not much fun...cannot shoot, then sit around and jaw with friends, eat lunch and then shoot some more like at an outdoor range.

I shoot a number of different things, 2-3 times a week, all year round. Been doing that for the past 4-5 decades now. What has changed a bit since the covid BS has been the number of rounds Im shooting each week, mostly due to the current supply issues.

Pre covid and the ensuing ammo and component debacle, I was shooting/loading around 25K rounds of 9mm a year. Along with 5K-10K of a mix of 38, 357, 44 spl and mag, 45acp, and one or two others. These days, Im probably down to around 15K of 9mm, and about half of what I was shooting of the others.

The bulk of the rifle calibers is mostly 5.56, which has dropped from around 8K-10K a year down to about half that now. These days, its usually 100 rounds a week or so. I also shoot 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 30-06, 30 Carbine as well, but all those combined are probably less than a couple of cases a year.

Prior to this last panic shortage, which was a bit different than things in the past, I always made it through the others we had in the past, without skipping a beat or reducing what I was shooting. This time around has been a bit more of a challenge. It would be nice if people would plan ahead a bit better and not get so caught up with Chicken Little and his buddies in the panic. ;)

About 150 rounds per week. Near 8000 rounds this year. I was well over 10,000 rounds pre crazy world. I reload to keep costs down as much as possible.

When we moved to the country, I expected to shoot a lot more. What I've discovered is that I visit the range several times a week, but I only shoot a few rounds each time. Most of this past year, I've shot 5 to 10 rounds per session. Just enough to find my zen.For 2022, I probably only went through 250 rounds (excluding 22LR).

I think I used to feel more pressure to maximize my range time when it was a 30 minute drive.

Roughly 4K-5K centerfire almost exclusively 38spl & 357Magnum revolvers. Just enough 9mm semi auto to keep from getting rusty.

Between a full-time professional career, supporting the activities of two teenagers, and caring for an elderly parent, the number of rounds down range is limited.

I try to go to the range about once a month or so +-.
I had my own place to shoot for 40 years but got old and had to downsize. No fun.
I usually shoot for about an hour or so. I always shoot at least 50 rounds 9mm and maybe another caliber or two. Probably around 100 rounds +-.

I try to hit the range 1-2 times a week. It will be 200-400 rounds per trip (rimfire and center fire).

Three years ago, before I was sent upstairs as a neutered administrator at work, I was training monthly and qualifying 4X yearly so my round count now is lower than it was then. :(

Stay safe.

I would say that I average shooting 3-6 times a month. I am fortunate to belong to a private outdoor range. In Colorado you usually can find days to shoot outdoors any time of the year but there are fewer available days in the winter. I am guessing I shoot 2 - 3 thousand center fire rounds and another thousand rimfire rounds a year.

I have the same setup with an elder of the church and am welcome to use the property any time I wish and they travel alot and honestly 80% of my range stuff is over on that property even though I seldom use it since my club/range is a few minutes closer.

I shoot a couple thousand rounds at least of 12ga every spring/summer/fall at the trap range and probably another 2K rounds split between 5.56/9mm at the rifle/pistol range and add another 2-3K for .22lr.

Definitely not as much as a hard-core 3gun competitor or anything, but I feel I get my reps in to remain at least fairly competent/formiddable and am probably better than the average, but always yearn for more....... I think that if you add all that up it's like 580ish per month.... doesn't always work out that way though some months I might not shoot at all in the bitter cold, but I might have a few months of what I would call "High volume"....

Due to health concerns I have shot 0 rounds in at least the last 7 years. I am about to get a new hip and I also bought my first 9mm, a Sig Sauer, and I hope to get out and do some shooting soon. And also to get my CCW again since I let it lapse.

I have an outdoor range and when I have unlimited time and perfect weather I like to, and can, shoot 150-200 rounds every weekend. Still working on the perfect weather and unlimited time issue. Probably doing about 300 rounds a month right now.

Lord willing, my house and couple acres of property where I spent my first 10 years shooting (and took for total granted) will be ready by end of summer at the latest. I'm hoping by fall we will be all moved in and settled in and I can't wait to be back in the boonies where I can basically shoot from my porch.

I'm super excited to have this private land back after being a townie for the past almost 6 years.....

Ive only been home in the USA for about 30 days this year. You would think with a month off I could find the time to to shoot. That said. Shots fired in 2023 = 1 single .45 HST to take out a copperhead my barn cats cornered.

More important than round count is what you do with them. When I shoot handguns I shoot 150-200 rds. Usually in multiple handguns. Shooting rifle it's usually less.

How often do you shoot?
I am retired and have access to several BLM shooting areas with closest being about 30 minutes away so access to shooting area is only limited by rainy winter months.

When I am shooting/testing/training with 22LR (10/22, T/CR22, ARs with CMMG 22LR bolts, GSG 1911, Glock 22 with AA 22LR slide kit), my range session average is around 300-500+ rounds shooting at least once a month, often several times a month outside of non-rainy winter season that lasts several months (So around 5K-10K+ rounds a year on average) - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...t-shipped-pricing.902560/page-5#post-12304852

When I am shooting/testing/training centerfire pistol and PCC (Mostly 9mm/40S&W/45ACP), I average 200-300+ rounds per session shooting several times a month (During recent component shortage, I have done more 22LR shooting to conserve reloading components but once I restock, plan to resume centerfire shooting, especially .223 loads). So 10K+ rounds a year on average "non-shortage" years.

When I was actively shooting USPSA in the 90s, my monthly average practice round count was 4000+ as I shot around 1000+ rounds during practice range session (So around 50K+ per year).
how much?
During past 30 years of shooting, I have shot over 1 million rounds (700K+ pistol, 300k+ 22LR) excluding rifle rounds and all these rounds with most being reloads weren't cheap as over $160,000 was spent on ammunition cost.

Yes, shooting could be an expensive hobby ... but not as bad as salt water fishing supporting several boats. :D:oops:

When I'm not on a 7/12 schedule I can go thru close to 1000 a month, and that includes rimfire. I've got my own range out here on the farm, it's just a few steps from the loading bench.
Even though I've been on the big hours, I'm over 1000 total for the first 4 months of the year. Should be closer to 4000. The weather's getting nicer, the latest project at the shop is winding down, that number will start to climb substantially. Probably anther 100 down range tonight
