Anybody gotten "hands on" with the new Henry Single Shot?

I own a henry leveraction 22 model hoo1 and while the receiver is painted the accuracy is outstanding!! I have a 4x32 scope with see-thru mounts so I can use the sights. but yeah this rifle has butter smooth action and shoots super good, infact its my go too squirrel gun!!

Gotta say, the more I look at the cartridges Henry is planning to ship, the .45-70 is looking more and more interesting. I have absolutely no need for such a thing, and the .44 mag probably makes more sense as I already have several revolvers in the cartridge. Still, if they aren't going to do one in .357 (what I really wanted), perhaps the .45-70 would be a fun toy.

I"m not very converant in twist rates....is the 45-70's twist rate, a good one for cast bullets. ? That is all that I would shoot in one if I were to buy one.
They are 1:20 twist.

Now I could see one of those 44 Mag rifles turning into a 445 Supermag real fast.

I'm anxiously awaiting the brass model in .44 Magnum, and I intend to do exactly what you suggest. I already have a Dan Wesson revolver and a T/C Contender in .445 SM.

Ergonomically speaking, I wonder how good of a cheek weld you could get if a scope is mounted.

Good question ... which is one of the reasons I'm hoping one of us actually get "hands on" fairly soon. I'm really hesitant to order one sight unseen without endorsement from others.

I put an inexpensive buttstock cheek rest with pouch on my Handi-Rifle to get the comb up a bit higher; it helped.

It will probably be like a marlin 336 I'm going to guess which is less than ideal for a scope. I actually emailed Henry this spring requesting a monte carlo stock. I can't decide which caliber I am going to get but if I decide to scope it I will probably get a leather lace on cheek pad with bullet loops made for it. If I get a 44 magnum I may just get a set of williams peep sights for it and leave the stock alone

So while I'm still waiting to see one of these there's been lots of time to consider all the "ifs". Like if they become popular enough I'd bet that someone like Boyds Gunstocks would have some nice stocks available for them. They do ( or did) have them for the Handi-rifles IIRC and if they were to produce them for the Henry single shot then a stock profile for scope use might just become reality. I'd love to see a nice laminated thumbhole stock with a high enough comb for scope use. What an ergonomic, lightweight, stylish little single shot rifle that would be.

Or people could learn to use peeps or irons and hunt without a telescope.

I’m going to venture a guess and say I’ve hunted with iron sights for longer than you’ve been on the planet based on the maturity of that comment.

And because I’m not that young anymore, neither are my eyes and a scope now days is a necessity to ensure I make a clean kill

I think it's hilarious that someone would actually think they are somehow superior because they use open sights on a RIFLE when there are guys out there who are killing things every day with a bow and arrow.

I have a friend that has about 10 or 12 recurve and long bows on the wall of his garage. He buys them at garage sales for 20$, fixes them up and takes them hunting. After he has shoot 10 deer with each he puts them on the wall and goes and gets another one. I used to bow hunt and it was a really fun challenge.

I like to play with different guns to keep things interesting but I have hunted enough to be wise enough to stack the odds in my favor. Using anything less than an individual needs to kill a deer humanely and with certainty is foolish and unfair to the animal. If you want to hunt with iron sights or a handgun, or a smooth bore musket, or a sharpened spear thats fine but you have to limit yourself to the range and visibility that you can be 98% certain to kill whatever game your hunting. I don't care what anyone says, a scope is huge advantage when your trying to find a clearing through the brush to shoot through or in low light. I have a couple guns with iron sights but my vision is poor so I will not take them unless I'm going to a stand that only has 60 yards of visibility or so. When I handgun hunt there is always a scoped rifle sitting next to me. Someone that used to hunt with us took a scoped 500 S&W revolver out to the stand as his only gun one night and came back to tell us he had a 10 point buck standing 175 yards from the stand for an hour.

This thread began Oct. 8th and eventually somebody, somewhere, will get one of those Henry single shot rifles and hopefully they will chime in here with some of their first impressions and reactions. Stay tuned.

Well earlier this year the Henry website said shipping march of 2017, so don't hold your breath!

A bit off topic, but I’m not hunting with a bow because everyone I know that tried it is hooked on it and I already have too many addictions
LOL. I've been hooked since the 70's.

It's like I tell people about golf. It's better for some if they never start. ha, ha.
