I prefer 000 over standard length 00 as I feel the larger pellets are significantly harder hitting at the price of only one less of them. As a bonus, I perceive the recoil of 2.75" 000 buck to be somewhat less nasty than its 00 equivalent despite the former's greater throw weight at the same listed velocity.

I can't see a real difference in pattern sizes in my IC choked 870P, the only real disadvantage to 000 for all round use for me is the lesser availability compared to 00. What says the forum?

Hey Youngster, welcome to THR.

As a rule, every shotgun I have owned, or do own, patterns tighter with 000 buckshot than 00 buckshot. Federal makes a low recoil tactical 000 buckshot, available from ammoman.com, that is awesome. This stuff will put all eight pellets inside the 8 ring on a B-27 silhouette target from 25 yards, out of my bone stock Winchester 1300 Defender with cylinder choke barrel. Not too shabby.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I had the same thoughts as you regarding 000 until I discovered my shotgun didnt pattern 000, instead it spits it in random areas. My 870 actually likes remington 8 pellet reduced recoil 00 buck. Im still patterning it for long distance, but out to 12 yards , it is a 3 inch fist sized hole.

Welcome, youngster.

000 is proof The More Is Better Principle lives.

Once again, it boils down to what your shotgun "Likes". One of mine does, the other doesn't, at least the Winchester stuff.

Get a mess of 5 packs of divers brands, benchtest until one shows tighter patterns. Buy all you can afford of that one.

My Maverick 88 by Mossberg doesn't like anything bigger than #1 Buck. But feed it #4Buck...LOOKOUT! ! !

000 is ok. A shell of eight 000 pellets IS better than the nine 00 shell load. However, the 2 3/4" 00 load of 12 pellets is much, much better than each. The 000 pellets have around 280 ft/lbs of energy, for around 2,240 total foot pounds. However, the 12 pellet 00 load has around 200 ft/lbs per pellet for a total energy of 2,400 ft/lbs. Not to mention 4 more extra pellets, 4 more hits! The 12 pellet 00 load is the most powerful buckshot load you can get for the 2 3/4" shell.

However, what I like better than 000 is 0000 buck! .38 caliber pellets! A 3 1/2" magnum load of these will have 12 of these pellets per shell. Simply the best buck load for hunting.

I wasn't all that impressed with the short magnums the last time I tried 'em but it could have just been the single brand I was using, I'll maybe try some other brands but I figure I might as well step right up to the 3"ers if I want extra lead.

In the meantime I'm pretty comfortable with standard length 000.

3" Magnum 000 Buck is the default load for our HD gun.

With an Extra Full Turkey choke, it produces a darned tight pattern out to 40 yards or so. Not that the wife and I go looking for trouble, but if trouble comes looking for us:

As for the 12 pellet 00 loads, the best by far is the Winchester XX brand. 12 copper plated pellets at 1200+ FPS. Quite effective for man or deer.

And how pray tell can you make simplistic statements like that? Did you sneak around one night and pattern all of our guns. Due to something I don't know every Winchester load I've shot has been less than ideal in my gun.
