Melonite is just another trade name of the tennifer process. It is identical in all of the ways that matter.

Boats, (you ex-Navy Bosun's Mate?) I read on THR (I think) that the tennifer process was not legal to apply to guns in USA, due to EPA rules. If that is so, then how can S&W's melonite be the same thing? Don't be shy to tell me I'm all wet.

Update? Did anyone ever find out what they went with? Fortunately I haven't had any contact with the NDHP lately (I think this is a symbol of maturity in comparison to the days of my youth).

Selecting a new service pistol is alarmingly like a being on a textbook selection committee in a school.
The librarian only cares about the binding and durability of the book. The political teachers want a book that mentions certain events or ethnic groups. The neo conservatives want the book to be printed in the USA.
The district wants the cheapest book. The legal counsel wants the book with the least liability. The buyer wants the book with the biggest kickback or the nicest salesperson. The teachers want the book to have a low reading level. The students want the book to be light and easy to carry.
No one ever reads the book!
Best of Luck to the NoDakHP

Sounds like a job for the new S&W M&P Automatic in .40 S&W.

They would LOVE an agency order to kick off production.

Who has a plastic framed S&W already. :D

In the nine months since my original post, I've had much more exposure to the 4506, 1006, 4566, and 5906. My opinion of S&W third-generation auto-loaders has only improved. Since you can get straight or curved backstraps for any of these pistols, I still think the highway patrol should stick with them. Let the trooper choose which caliber and between the steel or alloy frame.

It's gotta be a metal framed gun! Otherwise the cold will cause the plastic to get brittle and shatter :)

And LeonCarr, don't even think of moving up there from SE Texas. Did I mention cold? It is a unique experiance to find breathing painful, and that's without the wind blowing.

As for me, the choice of SW99 seems to be a good one. In .40 or .45.

Yeah, just like the cheap a$$ Glock frames shatter during winter for about 95% of Alaska LE agencies that issue them.

From the criteria you've listed, it looks like this is why the S&W Military & Police was designed.
