I pay $10 (THR member waterhouse. Nice fellow)

We should have to pay nothing as there should not be such a thing as a Federal Firearm Licensee anymore than there should be a Federal Cordless Drill Licensee.

I've never did transfers when I had an FFL. I told people if they wanted my services, then they needed to order through me. I offered to get them the gun at the same price as long as I was not taking a loss. Most of the money I made was selling them the accessories that went along with the gun. Spare clips, Ammo, Holsters, etc.

I've never really understood the need to buy a gun online, maybe because in the DFW area we have such a wide selection of Shows, Dealers, Retailers, etc. I've added up the costs it just doesn't seem to be that much of a savings.. maybe 20 bucks but I would rather keep the money in the local economy.

I can understand that but not every area has the availablity of guns that DFW does. I lived in Fredericksburg, VA for over 15 years and now live in Beckely, WV and the availablity of good pricing is few and far between in both locations. A lot depends on what you are buying.

Maybe I am buying things which are not the norm but when I walk into a shop and they tell me the cost of a Colt 80 series Govt is $900 + tax + $2 fee for the NICS I am going to purchase from my online Colt dealer who I can get the exact same gun from for $699 shipped + transfer. Sorry but the local simply is not going to get that sale.

Back to the OP. I really did not want this thread to become another local vs online debate. Please let it go.

I've never really understood the need to buy a gun online

availability, price, shopping from home, no haggling, no tax, more selection

the only disadvantage is that an unscrupulous person can sell a defective product more easily

i put up with the $20-25 because he will pack and ship one for me at his cost and believe me if your paying more then $9-15 for a long gun or $7-8 for a hand gun your getting riped off.

they pack it and ship it

Please vote in the poll
post what you pay $10 or $5 someday hopefully
[post] name & location of the FFL Sorry, that'd be rude. I know for a fact that he would not want that info posted on the internet.

No posting his info online...

Well, that's because he doesn't do transfers at that price for everyone, and because he is an at-home FFL. I used to get transfers through a pawnshop. After a handful of transfers, they told me that they would do them FOR ME, for $10 a pop, instead of the regular price. That was cool of them, but I ended up going somewhere else, simply because the new place was closer to me. The new guy was a home-based FFL and was also $10. Now, there is a third FFL, also an at-home guy, that is even closer than the first two, and his price is $10 too. He said that he'll do them for $5 if Colorado will adopt the CCW permit bypass to NICS. :D

The cheapest I am aware of around here is $35 to include background check. The two major gunstores in town charge $50 and one states that if the price of the firearm is > $1000 than the transfer fee is 10% of the price of the firearm in question.

That was the deciding factor for me to get my C&R license. It took just a couple of transfers for it to pay for itself.

Bump can we get over 200 votes?

So far it looks like over 85% of the voters in this poll pay less than $30 for their transfers.

I pay $10 for the transfer at a small gunshop. Cool thing is, he doesn't charge me a dime to ship any handguns I have going out. So, I guess I basically don't pay a dine or end up coming our ahead. Good guy that owns the place. No ther employees. I do a fair amount of business in there.

Budsgunshop.com ships to the buds retail for free, and you get free range passes with every gun purchase. So I pay...~ -$13? :p

Of the 3 I know of $45, 40, and 25. The $45 guy is a pawn shop about 5 min from work, the $40 guy is my usual LGS when it comes to transfers because he'll try to meet Buds prices within my limit (if he can get me the same gun for close to the same price after transfer fees I'll buy local), the $25 guy is an older gentleman and his hours can be iffy at times.

Personally I'd like to see he transfer fee included in the price of the weapon online (ie. Buds would pay the dealer $X for the transfer, of course this would be included in the price of the weapon) that way the price you pay online is the final price. If not , I'd content with the $25.

Wow! I must be an outcast paying $50. Called 2/4 places around me and both want $50. I'm not sure if its my location (generally anti-gun) or what, but compared to this I feel embarrassed!

Tried www.fflfinder.com?

I call around. Some go out of business. Some change their rates. I get, if I remember right, $15 for handguns, $20 for long guns. (I think he charges more for non-military). After several purchases, the one I have used the last 3 times offered to sell me direct with 10%, but even then, he couldn't get within $50 of what I was paying online. I declined his offer, which he kind of shook his head at when he read over the invoice. Instead, I send all my friends and coworkers to him.

I'm all about keeping money in the local economy... to a point. I will haggle a bit and if you don't bite I will take my money elsewhere. I would love it if people here haggled like people overseas do, that was actually a ball once you learned what you were doing.

While some people say that they don't want to deal with the hassle of the paperwork, you have to take into account the $. I will never buy LGS markup if I can get it over $50 cheaper online after shipping and ffl fee. Smart phones are awesome. I just pull up the add, show the price. You can counter-offer or I walk. And if I can get it for over 25% cheaper on-line, I don't even bother making the offer. I just smile and nod and play dumb so I don't offend anyone.
