At what point will you start buying primers again?

Seems to me the biggest shortage is in anything Large for primers. My rule for Small is: keep the buying to when available if my supply runs low; otherwise, let the shelf keep them. For Large Pistol, buy when available and increase my stock when I can. I don’t anticipate large pistol primers being around all that much longer.

I shoot.

I buy primers.

When I’m on my deathbed, I’ll remember more fondly the time spent shooting, especially with friends and family, than I would take pride in the few thousand bucks I would have saved by not buying primers for a couple of years. I shoot, I buy primers.

100% Right; had a great day at the range yesterday.

The most I will pay is .08 a primer delivered. I don't care what type or manufacturer. If they can't be had for that then the seller can keep them and let them age. I have a two-year supply at present. Not sure I'll even make it two years, so I'm not worried.

I have made this point in the past. Think about which cartridges use LPP. All have North American origins unless I miss my guess. And, even 45 ACP is moving to SPP.

As an unrelated aside, when 357 Mag first came out, it was LPP fired. I even have some 38 Spl brass that is LPP.

I think LPP is going to (slowly) become obsolete. This means LPP will become progressively more expensive and harder to find.

You have been warned.

I plan to include at least some LPP in every future primer purchase, when available .

44 magnum isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and I haven’t seen any of them using SPP, although the 1000 cases I have now will probably mean I never buy another round of 44 mag. Wonder if they will start selling sleeves to adapt large primer pockets to small primers?

I wish 10mm would move to SPP as well.

I bought 10,000 last week at $94/1000. I wasn't out but I considered it a gamble whether they will get cheaper or more expensive. I also bought powder so the hazmat fees were spread out over several things. I got caught short during one of the panics years ago and have stayed stocked up or overstocked every since. I probably had enough to see me through to the other side so those were just insurance!

I bought my first 10k SPP after the shortage started a $85/k, got another 10k when the price fell to $75/k and figured I was set for the year. When the price feel to $67/k, I got another 10k, figuring to stretch it to two years. I figure 50k SPP and 10k LPP should last until the price drops low enough to stock up.

All the prices I've listed above included shipping and HazMat

You got a better deal than I got. I already had a powder order so I just added them to it.

What primers? Still rarer than hen's teeth in these parts. My local shop had some CCI LPP for $7.99 per tray, and limited you to two trays per day. I ended up 400 before they ran out.

I was up in Northern Idaho last week and the Black Sheep store had a bunch of Remington SPP for $79 per 1000 and no limit. Unfortunately, I could only afford one brick.

Unfortunately, it's been the same story at my local shop, which is the only place that sells primers for 50 miles in any direction. They will get a few CCI or Federal primers in once a month or so, then they limit you to two trays, and they are gone in a couple of days.

Not until I'm forced too. I still have a 5 + years stock on any small primer I need and large pistol. LR are the ones I'm shortest on. Luckily I've have rifle brass that gives me a option. The rifles the require a LR I have not been shooting for this reason, to stretch out my supply. It's been coming up on 3 yrs now and small primer prices are dropping. Hopefully the supply and demand will level out and LR makes it back to the shelves soon. I would pay $60/k if I was forced to buy any, but not more at this time.

Ar what price point will you start stocking up again?

I just started reloading about 5 years ago, so this is my first shortage. I've been buying on and off these last three years as I've found them and can afford them. I'm well stocked now for the amount I reload and don't expect to buy anymore any time soon, although I would like to have a few more LPP's but don't really need them.

I will buy them if prices continue to drop, as I think with inflation the way it is the prices will most likely start climbing again in the not too distant future.

I bought 5k small pistol primers for a little over 400 bucks. I take advantage where I can did I need em nope. Just trying to stay ahead of the curve. Still looking for LPP kinda hard to come by lately. Might just order up small rifle primers.

When I need them. I don't go to the range regularly I don't shoot a lot. I feel I have enough for now for my needs. I don't think I need 20K primers for a Zombie anything.

If/when they appear on the shelves regularly, I would probably buy more.

Well, since I started reloading during the pandemic, prices for me are what they are, and as long as they are in stock, buy baby, buy!
I just need LRPs. I think I am well stocked for SRP.
BTW, my "stash" is only 3K deep of each, just to reload what I shoot during the weekends. No sense to keep 10K of the stuff. Besides, the things could go bad if not used within a year, who knows?
