I believe he found a partially finished one. ASMs generally have to be finished by the buyer. They often have nice externals and poorly fitted lockwork. This one was in the rough when he got it. It may have been a kit but not sure.
Actually this was not for the Dragoon project--it was an old Sile 44 cal revolver--it was missing the trigger and I didn't have the right replacement. I had made one before when parts suppliers didn't have one that fit. The advantage of making your own is that you can design it so that the finished trigger fits in the back of the triggerguard like it should.
It was piece of galvanized iron from who knows what--my Dad had picked it up more than 30 years ago. I'm like a lot of people who never throw anything away. Since it was soft iron, I heated it with charcoal and dropped it in a bucket of water to give it some casehardening.
The previous trigger I made using knifemaker's steel seemed to toughen up just from grinding on it, so I didn't heat treat it.
