i read that thers a caifornia militia lol, they dont have many rifles to choose from.like ak47 and ar15.

mini 14 would be cool, if you can find 10shot factory mags.

docnyt, from what i understand, you can have an AR with 10rd mags there, but you need to neuter it in other ways (i.e. make the magazine impossible to remove, etc). ak's are banned by name, but you may be able to get away with a saiga.

the laws here are basically you can only have 10 rounds, and no pistol grip. there are other things you can do to allow pistol grips (permanent mags, bullet buttons), but they aren't as practical as just buying a mini-14 or kel-tec SU-16CA.

For larger calibers you can go with M1A or even brownings BAR (although the BAR has this funky hinged floorplate that retains the magazines).

Its a law that defines an illegal rifle (assault rifles) as having a certain number of characteristics from a list. You can mix and match which characteristics your rifle has (as long as it has less than the evil #) but ultimately the least neutered weapon systems are going to have traditional styled butt-stocks which really limit your choices.

I prefer the mini, but it is nice to be able to use ar15 mags in the kel-tec if you come across them.

same as "New York assault rifle"
(lever action in caliber of choice)

BLR if you prefer pointy bullets
(you always can paint 'em black and tape a flashlight under the barrel, if they don't look tactical enuff)

This would not effect me much. I prefer solid to collapsible stock-wise.
I also prefer the M1 action to anything semi auto.
if I were you I would get an M1A if can afford. then an M1 Garand, then a Mini 14
reason for that order is 10 rounds of .308 is a tough package.
8 rounds of 30-06 is almost as tough.
and you can carry alot of .223

A Mini-14 with a 5 round magazine would be my choice.

If you can't solve your problem with 5 rounds of 5.56mm, chances are that you are in over your head anyways.

You need to go to calguns.net and check out the CA Rifles forum. You can tons of different choices out there and different ways to build you rifle. The most basic is just a Mini or M1A with 10 round mags. Like Z-M pointed out Ruger does make factory 10's now. You can also set up an AR or AK to be "Featureless" and use detachable mags. Once you figured out your rifle, go to the 2A forum and read up. We are on a good course to get rid of some of these laws. The guys at Calguns have a great strategy and we have some huge court cases already in play.

Hope this helps.

Easy, go to Arizona, and never return...

Actually the best deal in Cali is a SKS, period, all the EBR get turned into one in the end, so why pay the extra money?

i read that thers a caifornia militia lol

Never heard of it. Got a link?

There are some inconvenient ways to configure pistol-gripped rifles such that detachable magazines are legal. But non-pistol-gripped guns are fine as long as they lack the other evil but not really necessary features like bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, folding stocks, etc.

There are plenty of rifles that are legal here, as annoying as our laws are.

its called the high desert militia,i think? they had a FAL with fixed 10 rond mag.

FAL with fixed 10 rond mag would be good if it could use striper clips. i dont know if it can.

SKS

It's inexpensive, rugged and reliable.

7.62x39mm is a "barrier blind" cartridge (it'll shoot through light barriers - automotive sheetmetal, automotive laminated windshield glass, cinder blocks, etc.).

You can load it with premium expanding ammo.

Plenty of inexpensive training ammo available, and you can use it in a pinch in a SHTF situation.

If equipped, remove the bayonet to reduce "swing weight", to increase agility by making it a little faster to swing the muzzle onto target and faster to stop the muzzle so you don't swing past the target.

the m1a is awesome. however it is a expensive rifle for the elite rich man lol.

is cleaning the firing pin and using wolf ammo enough to guarantee your sks wont slam fire?

how good is the m1-carbine against level 2 kevlar?
is it a good tactical weapon in this day and age?

1.m1a/m14 2.mini 14 3.m1 grand 4.m1 carbine 5.sks 6.lever action 7.pc carbine although i would stick to the first 5. unless you get one of the larger caliber levers. if you can have one of the saiga's i would ad them to the list also. im glad i don't live in cali.

if you only own one firearm it should be a ak47.
every boy or girl should have at least one.lol

The SU-16CA is built specifically for CA and uses M16 mags.

Are the Saigas CA legal? I'd take one over an SKS given what the SKS is selling for these days.

Saigas are legal and great rifles. Lots of folks shoot them out here.

I say SKS. Magazines are expensive, and if you can only get 10 rounders, they offer diminishing returns for the money (aren't Saiga 10-rounders about $35?). Stripper clips can be pretty fast if you practice, and with Tech-Sights, the SKS is accurate and capable.

In some ways, it is what the Garand would have been if they had stuck with the .276 Pederson round instead of worrying about all the excess 30-06 they felt they had to burn up.

If you like the AK-style gun the VZ-58 is a great CA legal rifle...just add a bullet button...if you want to stay semi-auto, but like wood, the SKS is a better bet than the Mini-14. Both load 7.62x39mm from the top with stripper clips.

The ultimate CA PC-friendly tactical rifle is the Marlin 1894 in .357 Mag with either a low power scope or red-dot installed.

If you'd like a full powered rifle, it is pretty hard to beat the Enfield Mk 4 #2...likely the finest bolt action battle rifle from WW II
