USAS-12 has capacity of 20, and it select fires as well. Can you beat that?

Nope. I live in non-NFA Washington State.
A 20 round drum for my Saiga 12 will be shipping in a month or so however !

41magsnub why dont you try and put a better list for poll?

Why? The whole thing is pointless. My point (along with a bunch of other folks on here) is the best assault shotgun is the one that the person in question can handle correctly.

Edited for high roadiness

In that case a cane might be the best weapon at the time of need...hey why have guns and the modifications, and the new add on in them??

another vote for saiga 12. I call it my AK on steroids. Simple, rugged, dependable, quick to reload and fast as hell to fire. Nothing else "real world" on that list to compare it too. I tend to agree with the pump fans their favorites should be on the list too.

if you think the saiga 12 is fast, you should try the saiga 20...same action just more controlable

i got a FN SLP just before the end of the year and a Mk-1 is coming this month...as fast a s the benelli and less recoil to contend with

USAS-12 is far better than 870. Does 870 semi fire select? Does it take 20 cartridges?

"Pumps and lever actions do not qualify as "home defense" weapons. What if you lose the use of one arm?"

I guess you never saw Terminator 2, Huh? Hollywood BS aside, that was a fine example of single handed manipulation of a pump action I've ever seen. Suppose your HD weapon is grampy's old SA Peacemaker in 45 Colt? How are you going to reload that single handed? If that's all you've got you figure out a way and then TRAIN for the solution to become second nature.

Having said all that I'd NEVER have a pump as a HD weapon. Extreme stress in a hostile situation can lead to a "short stroke" double feed which will be nearly impossible to quickly clear.

The USMC just switched from their 870 pumps to the Benelli M4. I love my Benelli and it's never failed me. I hope to get a collapsible stock M4 version someday. But they're hard to find at even a top end reasonable cost for the HUGE military contracts that have recently been placed.

Unless you train yourself not to. ;)

Pump for HD is useless....there are however possibility of scenarios where pump action is not desirable. Semi or select is the way to go. Rest, there are many different pump actions and different folks have different preferences. If we are talking just pump action then the poll should be on that but this is for general HD and pump although can be a choice but hardly competitive with semi or select.

From what I have heard this limited to MP units. The rest of the Corps for the most part are using Mossy 500SP's and 590's.

870 for me.
Not sure about the "what if you had one arm" scenario- then that opens billions of other "what If's" in a HD situation.
You could pick ANY gun and find some sort of issue depending on the situation (maneuverability in close quarters, over-penetration, shot placement, distance, trigger pull, follow-up shots)

I'm questioning the wisdom of asking about an "assault" shotgun. I intend for my firearms to be purchased for law-abiding reasons, not to go "assault" someone. If I was in a SWAT team, or a mercenary or somesuch, sure, but....eh well.

And before someone thinks it, no, I know about the "assault weapon" crap, and that's not what I'm getting at.

No better weapon than the 870, carried it in the USMC. Pump weapons do not qualify as "home defense" weapons. I guess that we need to inform the military that they do not qualify as combat weapons too. Come on and get smart, sometimes simple is better, especially when under stress and in the dark.

AMEN! A Mossy 500 or 590 please otherwise an 870 all the way.

Firepower, it souonds like you had your mind made up when you started this poll. If you like the USAS 12 so much, then use it. You won't convince me that you are any more effective with you USAS 12 then I am with my Mossberg 500, Remmington 870 or Winchester 1300. Select fire is not the only action suitable for a fighting shotgun. You wanna try to use some "less-lethal" rounds in that USAS 12? Tell me how that works out for ya.

I voted for the Mossberg 590. Hard to beat its reliability and ruggedness. I carried a Mossy 500 in Iraq and never had any problems. Did the job quite well actually.

Spoken like someone who has never used a pump or seen an auto fail to cycle.
