Spoken like someone who has never used a pump or seen an auto fail to cycle

I have both pumps and autoloaders.

I pefer autoloaders, I have a question, riverdog, have you ever had an autoloader fail to cycle?? To clear, all you do is pull the the bolt handle back and let go....

I've had an 870 jam to the point of not being able to function (granted, I "short-stroked" it, so it was my own fault).

I've never had an autoloader malfunction to the point of failure. I've had an 11-87 shred an o-ring and you could still manually cycle it....

i've seen many more pumps fail than autoloaders...it's not the gun, it's the operator's training.

this sounds much like the old argument between the wheelgun and the semi-auto pistol. so...how many pump-guys would take a 8-shot wheelgun over a single stack auto?

Marksman12: I have Moss 590 A1 Compact Cruiser. Where I live we do not use less than lethal cartirdges. I am just not convince that pump is more effective than a semi or auto. As for riverdog, I think I have seen and used my share of pump action shotguns - however, you are well entitled to your opinion. Your idea of auto fail to cycle is not relevant, because if it was we would not be using AKs or M16s, but bolt actions!

870. Simple is good.

I have a specops on mine, so recoil is on par with an auto. It also allows my wife to shoot it recreationally (she is not a gun person, but has worked the 870 enough to know how to use it if need be-that would not have happened w/o the specops.)

Question About the Mossberg 930 SPX

I am wanting a fast cycling (and reliable) tactical auto for 3-gun matches and I am leaning towards the Mossberg 930 SPX. My question is, can the 18.5" barrel be machined for choke tubes? Is there an advantage for having choke tubes in an 18.5" barrel? The steel targets at the some 3-gun matches are at varying distances and some are at 30+ yds, and the ammo requirement has maximum shot size of #6 lead. Any thoughts or experiences?
Thanks

Steve,

The 930SPX comes with a CYL bore barrel, buckshot would be effective to about 30-35 yards, slugs are good much farther. Having a gun that you can change the choke tubes is an advantage, especially if you're are competing at longer ranges.

There is plenty of "meat" on the barrel of the SPX to have chokes installed, most gunsmiths will charge between $35 - $50 for the ream and tap, then you;ll have to buy chokes.

I'm not sure which is best, am another person surprised that the 870 wasn't included, and agree with DM that it is the shooter, not the shotgun that's the deciding factor.

870 for me too. Simple and it goes bang. Maybe put a couple mods on it like a light 'n such....

So, no Mossberg 9200 mentioned-

-anywhere in this whole thread. I own a mossberg 9200. Fired THOUSANDS of rounds out of this weapon, from cheap lowbrass birdshot to 1 oz slugs. Ive had only a couple jams out of this weapon. Ive had more problems with my 870 and 500 pumps. This mossberg costs less than $250. I added the Knoxx stock, cut the barrel, moved the rifle sight, added mag tube, added the picatinny rail for a vertical grip and surefire and then I finished it in none other than "ultimate tacticool OD green".
For under $400 does it get any more HD/assault than this??????
heres some pics of me and my hd gun.

The USMC just switched from their 870 pumps to the Benelli M4. I love my Benelli and it's never failed me. I hope to get a collapsible stock M4 version someday. But they're hard to find at even a top end reasonable cost for the HUGE military contracts that have recently been placed.

From what I have heard this limited to MP units. The rest of the Corps for the most part are using Mossy 500SP's and 590's.

Marine MP units may be the first to receive them along with the updated training but the Benelli M4 / M1014 was adopted for the new roll of “Joint Service Combat Shotgun” (JSCS), it is going to eventually replace / faze out all other shotguns in use and become the standard combat shotgun for all branches of US Armed Forces.

Another vote for the standard Mossie 500 Special Purpose, as opposed to 590. I like the Mossie over the 870 because the placement of the action release and safety are a big improvement. And I like the 500 over the 590 because I'd prefer not to carry around the extra weight of the heat shield (let's be honest - that's just to look cool and it adds weight - if you like it that way, enjoy) and I don't have much use for the added cost of the little extras on the end of the mag tube, etc. And if I'm not mistaken, my 20" barrel 50577 will accept one more in the mag than the 18.5" 590.

I think its probably the cultural thing that we here in PK mostly prefer a fully auto or semi over pump. Whenever we want to seperate a useless gun from other we go with pump. However, there is market for side by side and O/U if they are spanish or bristish.

Don't know which shotgun is the best but I do own the 870 and its a fine firearm.
Last month, on the Military Channel they reported on the Atchisson AA-12.
I have never seen anything like this. It fires rounds from 00 buck to AP tank-killers. If you get a chance to see it ----Do watch !!

Pa. Bill USAS-12 is similar to AA-12! Thats what I have been telling everyone here that 12 guage fully auto is something entirely different then a simple pump, which may be a good gun to own.

Firepower-----Agree

The report ( Miliatry channel ) said its the only ture military designed shotgun.
Not a pump, the one I saw, had a drum feed, must like the Thompson sub-machine gun. It is very different some anything I have seen.

But the question was about which gun would be best for home defense, not military assaults. I saw the video of the full auto shotgun, very impressive, not something I'd want to use in my home. If you feel a need to have a full auto shotgun at the ready in your home, it's time to find a new neighborhood.

Sir, I refer you to poll heading "Best Defense/Assualt Shotgun?"

Assualt was and is part of the poll, may it be military or otherwise.
