I have the rare (for me) opportunity to buy a new pistol. But, unfortunately, my price ceiling is rather low. I'm trying to come up with a list of pistols to take a look at and I was hoping that others here could throw in their two cents. I already have a 9MM so I'd like to get something a little more powerful. My brother-in-law shoots in IDPA/ISPC matches, and I've gone to a few with him, so something that would work well in that setting would be nice.

My list so far:

A Ruger P-Series: No, they aren't the prettiest guns in the world but they shoot well. I have several friends who own Ruger P-Series pistols and I've never heard a complaint. They appear to be going in the $360-$390 price range. The mag capacity is rather low for the .40 and .45 models. The availability of parts and magazines is not a concern.

EAA Witness: I have no experience with these. The guy who runs the IDPA/ISPC matches suggested it as a good starter pistol. They hold more rounds than the Ruger which is a plus. The street price seems to be about $380. The availability of parts and magazines is unknown to me.

Stoeger Cougar: I've read an article about these in a gun rag and, of course, they are fantastic. But, those articles are based on one guys impression of a pistol that was hand picked by the manufacturer. I've read a few posts here and on TFL from people who bought them and everything seems positive. But, they are too new to really know much about their reliability over the long haul. I'd like to know why Beretta stopped making them in the first place. Were they just overpriced or was there a real problem with the design? The street price seems to be about $330, which is attractive. The CZs were pretty cheap when they first hit the states but now it's hard to find them for less than $450. I suspect that in the next year or so the Stoeger will either disappear or go up in price. Longterm availability of parts and mags is a concern.

Any comments on these pistols or suggestions for others?

Thanks.

Don't know about best since thats very subjective but:

http://www.stoegerindustries.com/firearms/index.tpl -- Oops, you already mentioned stoeger, I will add that one of the guys I work with just bought one and seems to like it, he has an extensive gun collection.

http://www.cz-usa.com/ -- heard good things about cz-p01 from George Hill at madogre.com.

http://www.taurususa.com/ -- Brazil

You can also look on GunBroker.com for barely used firearms in any flavor you might like, as well as at your local pawn shops. Sometimes you run across a good deal.

The S&W M&P 40 is selling for $400 locally, as is the CZ75B in 40S&W. Either would be a fine choice.

I would have to say Springfield Xd's they are great guns!!!! worth their weight in gold in my opinion. Also the Pt-111 9mm by taurus is a great gun, I just picked one up for $250

Bud's has the CZ 40P compact for $300.

I looked at a Stoeger Cougar priced at $350 at Gander Mountain and couldn't see any difference in quality compared to a Beretta Cougar I checked out in a local shop.

Someone on this forum was telling me about a Taurus PT-145 and that it was a great gun. I see the MSRP is $421 for a new one. A used one should be well within your budget.

SA GI 1911, or some other used 1911.

If you have a 9mm and want something more powerful, then 45 acp is the way to go.

You can find a used springfield milspec 1911 for 400, which is always good.

another good choice is a tanfoglio. I bought a new 10mm for 350, and acquired a couple of 15rd mags for it. for the price, it's very accurate and reliable. here's 5 rounds at 9 meters with the tanfoglio. remington ammo.

A friend of mine has a huge number of 9mms and .40 S&W autos, including a couple of Tanfoglio made "Witnesses". He also has 3 CZ's and all in all, the CZ guns shoot better, the Tanfoglios are prettier. I've got the hots for the SP-01
in .40 full sized, when it's released. It's going to be a little over your budget though.

My vote is for the Taurus Mil Pro in any of the calibers. Should be able to pick up a .40 or .45 SS for about $329 + tax. Comes with 2 mags and I think it is one of the best values out there right now. Just make sure you get the Millenium Pro model. Good luck.

I recently got a NIB Taurus 24/7 Pro in .40 S&W for $389 plus tax, tag, and title...

Another vote for the Tauruses, either the 24/7s or the MilPros. I have a DAO PT745 that's a solid, beautifully made thing that has functioned every single time from out of the box. The 24/7 Long Slide is a beautiful thing with great grip ergonomics, and the MilPros are excellent CCW guns.

I would go for the Ruger P-Series, in a 9mm or .45. You can find these used in my area for around 300 bucks in pawn shops. Reliable, accurate, and virtually indestructible.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

My list so far:

A Ruger P-Series:

Stoeger Cougar:

You can't go wrong with either of these two guns. I own a Ruger P95 and haven't had any trouble with it. Not a "sexy" gun, but a very good practical pistol. Also, as mentioned, the Taurus 24/7 Pro is a good one.

Any comments on these pistols or suggestions for others?

  • S&W Sigma 40
  • Bersa Thunder 40 or 45

Both of these guns are under $400.

Finally, if you do find a couple of extra dimes in the sofa, I say go ahead and check the CZ 75B in 40 S&W. Around these parts, it selling for $410+tax. I have one and is a beaut.

I'm becoming partial to the XD's, but you cannot buy them for $400. Unless you get lucky and find a used one.

I like the EAA witness series. I've had a PS model since about 1997, and bought an Elite Match model a few months ago for $399 new. The PS can be had for $300-350 new, and I think the Elite Match has gone up to $429 here in Houston.

The Match model is certainly the deal of the century, I've never shot anything that was as accurate, and well finished, for even twice the price.

Another vote for the Taurus 24/7. They were $370 here when I looked the other day.
I ordered a Witness Elite Match Wed.(should pick it up today) but it was $489 (shipping included) plus tax. You can get a plain jane Witness under $400 and they are very nice as well. The Match is made to fit the nitch you are looking for.

The Ruger is a good choice and reliable, but I'll put in another vote for the XD-40. I got mine for $450 NIB.

Snoogens

I have two good pistols, both 9mm, both around $400. The Smith and Wesson model 908 was purchased used for $395....it has an alloy frame, single stack mag, and is a super reliable setup, with a decocker (put over 2,000 rnds through it in the past few months). My Sig P6 is a used West German Police gun, which has been expertly maintained: it's historic, super-reliable, and is available all over the USA for $300-$400...so you can own one of the world's finest handguns for a reasonable price. Good hunting!!

Charles Daly (FEG) Hi-Power

Police Trade Walther P-1

both would leave you plenty of $ for ammo and practice.
