MOBY - That's When I Reach For My Revolver Lyrics

Once I had my heroes
Once I had my dreams
But all of that is changed now
The truth begins again
The truth is not that comfortable, no
Mother taught us patience
The virtues of restraint
Father taught us boundaries
The knowledge we must go
I'm trying to protect my unity

That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when it all gets blown away
That's when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way

A friend of mine once told me
His one and only aim
To build a giant castle
And in it sign his name
Sign it with complete community

That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when it all gets blown away
That's when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way

Now that the sky is empty
And that is nothing new
Instead they look upon us
When they tell me
That we're nothing
I say!

That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when it all gets blown away
That's when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way

That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when it all gets blown away
That's when I reach for my revolver
The spirit passes by this way

And one of my favorite songs by carolines spine called "Sullivan". It about the Sullivan Brothers

it's not hard to reach back to the day
underneath that iowa sun
running to the tower of waterloo
looking for the Sullivan's train to come
and his five boys would run to the top
and salute him as he went by
first we'd wave hello
then we'd wave goodbye
goodbye

it's not hard to reach back to the days
after the attack on pearl
overnight my buddies turned into men
running out of time for games and girls
and the Sullivan boys were not overlooked
Uncle Sam'll call them each by name
the very next day they left on a mystery train

say goodbye, Mrs. Sullivan
and don't you cry
"-We regret to inform you
the Navy has taken your sons away-"
all five... so put your blue stars in the window

it's not hard to reach back to her smile
when she'd recieve a letter
and the letters they sounded generally the same
they said if they couldn't be home
but at least they were together
on a mighty fighting battleship
somewhere in the South Pacific
the letters never got much more specific

say goodbye, Mrs. Sullivan
and don't you cry
"-We regret to inform you
the Navy is keeping your sons away-"
all five... so keep your blue star in the window

it's not hard to reach back to the day
when the war finally came home
Uncle Sam'll send you a telegram
so he doesn't have to tell you over the phone
i heard she cracked up
when they found out what the war had cost
when all five of her boys were lost...

say goodbye, Mrs. Sullivan
go ahead and cry
"-We regret to inform you
that all your sons have passed away-"
all five... so change your blue star to gold

blue star to gold

Mr. Charlie

"gonna scare you up and shootcha, cause Mr. Charlie told me so"

Another Grateful Dead song, sung by Ron McKiernan.

But, best one, (as mentioned by other posters), maybe Steve Earle's Mama said a pistol is the devil's right hand.

"I Fought The Law"

[Originally by Bobby Fuller]

Breakin' rocks in the hot sun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won
I needed the money 'cause I had none
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won

I miss my baby and I feel so sad
I guess my race is run
Well she's the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the

Robbin' people with a six gun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won
I miss my baby and I miss my fun
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won

I miss my baby and I feel so sad
I guess my race is run
Well she's the best girl that I ever had
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the

I fought the law and the law won

Best "gun" song

Hank Jr. Country boy can survive!

The preacher man says it's the end of time
And the Mississippi River, she's a-goin' dry...

The interest is up and the stock market's down
And you only get mugged if you go downtown...

I live back in the woods, you see,
My woman and the kids and the dogs and me...

I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a four-wheel drive
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

I can plow a field all day long,
I could catch catfish from dusk till dawn...

Make our own whiskey and our own smoke, too,
Ain't too many things these old boys can't do...

We grow good old tomatoes and homemade wine,
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

Because you can't stomp us out and you can't make us run
'Cause we're them old boys raised on shotguns...
We say grace, and we say ma'am,
If you ain't into that, we don't give a damn...

We came from the West Virginia coal mines
And the Rocky Mountains, and the Western skies...

And we can skin a buck, we can run a trot line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

I had a good friend in New York City,
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly...

My grandpa taught me how to live off the land,
And his taught him to be a businessman...

He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights,
And I'd send him some homemade wine...

But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife,
For forty-three dollars, my friend lost his life...

I'd love to spit some Beech-Nut in that dude's eye
As I shoot him with my old forty-five
'Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

Because you can't stomp us out and you can't make us run
'Cause we're them old boys raised on shotguns...
We say grace, and we say ma'am,
If you ain't into that, we don't give a damn...

We're from North California and South Alabam',
And little towns all around this land...

And we can skin a buck, we can run a trot line,
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive
A country boy can survive
Country folks can survive...

I was always partial to the Grateful Deads' arrangement of "I've been all around this world":

"Up on the Blue Ridge mountain, there I'll take my stand
A rifle on my shoulder, six-shooter in my hand"

Also has the lyrics:

"Lulu, my Lulu, come and open the door
Before I have to walk on in with my old forty-four"

Pretty grim; it's about a man hanged for murder. Than again, pretty much all folk songs were.
Man, I thought for certain no one would've posted this, much less at only the 8th post! (I was going to post it) :)

MOBY - That's When I Reach For My Revolver Lyrics

That Moby song is a cover version, the original is by Mission of Burma.
I was surprised when he recorded it as Moby is VERY anti-gun; this quote is from his webpage;
Guns aren't natural phenomenon like tornadoes. Guns could easily be done away with. Make them illegal. Why not? It's worked in other countries.

Somethings seem so ingrained in our culture (like, oh, slavery, child labour, ddt, etc) until they're outlawed. Then they, to a very large and significant extent, go away. So make guns illegal. Across the board. Illegal. And they will, to a very large and significant extent, go away. They're just too dangerous to be owned and used by individual citizens. At least that's my opinion.

I would have to go with the classic..."The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Reba McEntire...I took the liberty of highlighting my favorite part in red...I've loved this song since I was about 7 or 8...and I've only "been into guns" for about two months...go figure:D

He was on his way home from candletop
Been two weeks gone and he thought he’d stop
At web’s and have him a drink for he went home to her
Andy wo-lo said hello
He said hi what’s a doing
Wo said sit down I got some bad news that’s gonna hurt
Said I’m your best friend and you know that’s right
But your young bride ain’t home tonight
Since you been gone she’s been seeing that amos boy seth
He got mad and he saw red
Andy said boy don’t you lose your head
Cause to tell you the truth I’ve been with her myself

Chorus:
That’s the night the lights went out in georgia
That’s the night that they hung an innocent man
Don’t trust your soul to no back woods southern lawyer
Cause the judge in the town’s got bloodstains on his hand

Andy got scared and left the bar
Walking on home cause he didn’t live far you see
Andy didn’t have many friends and he just lost him one
Brother thought his wife must’ve left town
So he went home and finally found the only thing
Daddy had left him and that was a gun
He went off to andy’s house
Slipping through the back woods quiet as a mouse
Came upon some tracks too small for andy to make
He looked through the screen at the back porch door
He saw andy lying on the floor
In a puddle of blood and he started to shake

The georgia patrol was making their rounds
So he fired a shot just to flag em down
And a big bellied sheriff grabbed his gun and said
Why’d you do it?

The judge said guilty in a make believe trial
Slapped the sherrif on the back with a smile and said
Suppers waiting at home and I got to get to it

Chorus

They hung my brother before I could say
The tracks he saw while on his way
To andy’s house and back that night were mine
And his cheatin wife had never left town
And that’s one body that’ll be found
You see little sister don’t miss when she aims her gun

Lawyers, Guns and Money - Warren Zevon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I went home with the waitress
The way I always do
How was I to know
She was with the Russians, too
I was gambling in Havana
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Dad, get me out of this

I'm the innocent bystander
Somehow I got stuck
Between the rock and the hard place
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck
And I'm down on my luck

Now I'm hiding in Honduras
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The **** has hit the fan

Send lawyers, guns and money...

Rottweiler Blues by Warren Zevon

Got a Glock on the bedside table
Machine gun leaning by the bedroom door
Kevlar vest in the closet
Well,I wear it when I go to the store...

OK, the "best gun movie" thing has been beaten to death (and then some)...but what about the best SONG involving guns...Not so many to choose from I think, but I'm sure we know of a few...

I'll save mine for later after I see what y'all can come up with....

Too funny...

By the late Notorius BIG (not sure what track),

I got seven mac elevens.
Eight thirty-eights.
Nine nines.
Ten mac tens.
The **** never ends.
You can't touch my riches.
Even if you had mc hammer and the three fifty seven *******.

For sure one of my faves is James' Mc Murtry's "Chocktaw Bingo"

And he stopped off in Tushka at that "Pop's Knife and Gun" place
Bought a SKS rifle and a couple a full cases of that steel core ammo
With the berdan primers from some East bloc nation that no longer needs 'em
And a Desert Eagle that's one great big ol' pistol
I mean .50 caliber made by badass Hebrews
And some surplus tracers for that old BAR of Slayton's
Soon as it gets dark we're gonna have us a time

Why were Reba and Vickie able to sing "The night the lights went out in Georgia", but Garth had to cut "The thunder rolls" short?

She runs back down the hallway, through the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol kept in the dresser drawer
She tells the lady in the mirror: he won’t do this again
Tonight will be the last time she wonders where he’s been
And the thunder rolls…and the thunder rolls

The thunder rolls and the lightning strikes
Another love grows cold on a moonless night
And the storm blows all out of control
Deep in her heart the thunder rolls

========================================

The song some of us may have learned as kids...

Frog went a-courtin', and he did ride, Uh-huh,
Frog went a-courtin', and he did ride, Uh-huh,
Frog went a-courtin', and he did ride.
With a sword and a pistol by his side, Uh-huh.

Too young to remember the original version by Vicki Lawrence, eh?;)

I actualy have hear the Vicki Lawrence version...I don't know if it is just that Reba is the version I cut my eyeteeth on or if it is just better sung, but I like the Reba version better.; Nothing against Vicki:)

Another one by Hank Williams Jr. is " I've Got RIghts". " I went down to the Mary Carter paint store. Said,Gimme one of those Smith & Wesson Magnum 44's.

some of the best songs ive heard that involve guns are by "catch 22" and "Streetlight manifesto". They are both modern ska bands and are very catchy. some of the lyrics are:

all different songs

Steve took three or four
Heather took more.
She lit a cigarette
now they're walking out the door
with a semi automatic and a ski mask on
and they look to one another
and they say to themselves
"what fun".

Jack dropped 21,
Jill 22.
The look in his eye said
"Brother what are you going to do
with a 9mm and a three piece suit?"
they look to one another and say
"hey mother????er, who's the fool?"

when they come for me, I'll be sitting at my desk, with a gun in my hand, wearing a bulletproof vest.. Singing "my, my, my, how the time does fly, when you know you're going to die by the end of the night

I've got a gun in my hand but that gun won't cock
My finger's on the trigger but that trigger seems locked
and I can't stop staring at the tick tock clock
and even if I could I would never give up.
With a vest on my chest, a bullet in my lung
I can't believe I'm dying with my song unsung.
And if and when I die won't you bury me alone?
'Cause I'll never get to heaven if I'm singing this song.

just thought id share :D

So don't resist, or you might miss Christmas
I tote guns, I make number runs
I give emcees the runs drippin;
when I throw my clip in the A.K., I slay from far away
Everybody hit the D-E-C-K
