Big oops at Walmart, gun on the floor!

Was open carrying a P11 in a Serpa holster one summer day, wearing a polo shirt and jeans. Had to go into a place where OC is frowned upon. As I was standing in the parking lot untucking the shirt, the hem caught on the paddle and flipped holster out right on the pavement. Nobody said anything except for my wife who wouldn't stop laughing. She tells me the "OH $%@&!!" look was priceless. Small scrape on the holster was the only damage.

Generally I wear a sport shirt as cover, but some days in GA it are too hot for that.

CoRoMo,,,,maybe one of those fabric under the shirt shoulder holsters might serve you well. I use one when I go into Seattle wearing dress shirts, etc. Completely concealed and almost as quickly accessed as an IWB with a shirt over it. No problems in the "john" either.

Here is the site:

If I have to remove my firearm in a public setting, I always remove the holster with the gun in it. Keeping the gun in the holster while handling it will prevent the possibility of an accidental discharge.

It happens to the best of us. In 40 years it happened twice, both times in shouder rigs getting in or out of a vechicle. I don't wear them anymore. Best way to handle it is just pick it up, and reholster it. and be on your way. Neither time did anyone gasp or freak out. One time it was a crowded parking garage in Manhatten. I excused myself and that was that. If you don't make a fuss, no one will freak out most of the time.

I was on my bike, stopped to get a fresh shirt before meeting a girl. Back out in the parking lot, I hastily removed my tucked in tee and it snagged the belt clip on my P3AT. Gun must've skidded 15 or 20 feet on the asphalt. Don't think anyone noticed, though

Another incident occurred some years back while were were out water skiing with myself and a couple of other officers.

We stopped for fuel and a burger at a local marina/roadhouse on the river... Not wanting to leave pistols in the boat unattended with a bunch of people milling around, Jim stuffed his little Mauser HSC in the waist band of his trunks and pulled his shirt down over it...

While we were seated at a table munching on a burger, this lady playing pool behind Jim, evidently spotted the pistol, said something to her boyfriend who moved over by Jim, Pool Cue at the ready, the girl goes and gets the owner who grabs his gun from behind the bar, we didn't know him from Adam.. He approaches us, stares at Jim, who kept eating his burger... We still were not aware that "His Slip was Showing"..

The owner said, I hear one of you has a gun... Jim never missed a bite.. he took one hand off his burger, pulled his police ID out of his shirt pocket, opened it showing the owner... Then Carl spouted off, yeah, we all got one... then we all IDed ourselves and went back to eating... Later the lady walked up to Jim as we were leaving and said she was sorry... to which he replied, "No-Mam, I'm the one who is sorry.. You did the right thing".

I had a spare magazine drop out in Home depot once but never actually dropped my gun. When I took my first CCW class the instructor told us a story of when he was new to carrying he had a j-frame in an appendix carry position and the clip busted of the holster so it slid down his pant leg. The gun was resting at the bottom of his pant leg against his shoe and instead of taking it out the bottom and dropping it in a pocket he worked it back up the pant leg and worked it into his underwear.

He shared that if that situation ever happened again he would just take it out and drop it in his pocket since it would be far less odd looking.

Pistol on the ground, pistol on the ground, lookin like a fool with your pistol on the ground! :neener:

Yeah, it happens. Unfortunately, even though its something that probably happens to most people who carry if they do it long enough, it still constitutes a crime in most states. Just one more reason to get open carry passed.

I don't think most people would freak out if they saw you drop your gun. If you act nonchalant about it, they will probably either think you're a cop or otherwise someone not to be worried about... unless you look like a total scumbag or something. Still, be careful out there and carry on!

As an off-duty cop, I dropped a S&W M59 in a bank parking lot while exiting my pickup truck there. Don't think anyone saw it.
More recently, like a couple of months ago, I took my two-year old daughter to her weekly swim lesson. The gym that hosts these lessons is part of the local hospital system, and follows its no-weapons policy, so I usually leave my gun in the car. That day, I forgot, and still had it on my belt. To limit time on the changing room, I usually stop poolside at the bench, drop off our bag (towels, etc.) and doff my shirt as well. I then take our swimsuits to the locker room, and sometimes carry her there. That day, I doffed my short as usual, picked up my daughter, and trotted off to the locker room, passing the lap pool (which is next to the "lesson" pool) and several people seated along it. My ITB-carried Kel-Tec PF-9 was in clear view on my belt. I quickly realized this, re-positioned my daughter to try to use her body and legs to cover the gun, and returned to the bench for my shirt. My gun had to have been seen, but nothing about it came up. (It could have been an issue not only because of the system's policy, but also due to the prohibition on open-carry in Florida.)

So if, while "open carrying" here in MO where it's legal, dropping my gun on the ground is ok but dropping on the ground while carrying concealed isn't ok?

Accidentally dropping your gun on the ground is a safety issue, not an illegal act of "brandishing" your weapon.

Most states (as used in text) ??
Which ones?

The takeaway from this thread is there are lots of folks carrying in the local WalMart.
Are you kidding? You SEEN the people that hang out at Wally World?!? :D

As for dropping it in public, well, it was a locked bathroom, but the P-01 went SPLOOSH! In an UNUSED toilet bowl. Took three days for the Crimson Trace lasergrips to dry out enough to work, but you should have heard the girl at CTG snicker when I asked if that was covered under warrantee.
It isn't.

I hate it when that happens. Don't make me tell the story about my pistol sliding down my pant leg and onto the floor by the urinal... Yuck! That uric acid really does a number on the old finish.

I've dropped my M9 down my flight suit leg when the strap on the shoulder holster apparently loosened up right in front of about 60 something people. Wasn't a big deal but I kind of scared myself when my finger slightly slipped into the trigger guard momentarily when trying to pull it out the bottom of my pant leg. I hate that damn holster. Dropped it twice before too (unconcealed and onto the ground).

It has happened to me when I carried in a belt holster, never when I carry inside pocket.

Thanks, but I'm not into the man-zier or underwear holsters. Maybe someday if my man-breasts get unmanageable. My rig is good the way it is. It has evolved for years and it is now what I like the best. Someone PM'd me another recommendation to keep my belt clips hidden, but jeez, I don't friggin care if some other gun-nut is able to identify what I've got hitched up. I suppose I understand the whole petrified-by-fear-of concealment failure, but I don't share it. It's not illegal here. If I'm printing or whatever, I'm basically open carrying, and I sometimes do that too. Big deal.

Same here. I know that sometimes I may print a teeny bit when bent over or stretching at odd angles, but I really don't care and will never be convinced otherwise.

The only way to fix it is to wear baggier clothes or wear a smaller gun...neither is a compromise I am willing to make.

I'm ok with it, ymmv.

Yeah, they told me that when I got my CCW and down at work before I retired.

They were simply wrong. Open carry in Missouri is unfortunately, a piece meal law, on a city by city basis. Read the link that wow6599 posted.

Walmart Thats the kind of thing that would happen to me, except when I opened the door a 4 year old would hand it back to me. OOH new favorite nightmare...thats not in anyway to make you feel worse, I just saying it could have been much worse, your just embarassed now, what if you'd blown off your toe and had to limp out, leaving a blood trail....

Your holster has to retain the gun under any circumstances. Dont take it out of the holster. If you drop it in the bathroom of WalMart someone may pick it up and run. You wont even see who it is. Also, if you take it out you may forget it there. I like the IWB from Andrews Custom Leather. Never had the gun fall out. Cost a little more but worth it.

I never droped my gun, but once i was pulling out my laptop from backpack in crowded college coridor when fully loaded magazine of my VZ-58 poped out and hit the floor. Few students noticed it, but noone cared...
