Border Patrol agent escapes mountain lion attack

Associated Press - October 3, 2007 3:04 PM ET

(good thing it wasn't an illegal lion, or the agent would have been in trouble)

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Border Patrol agent escaped injury in a mountain lion attack near Nogales.

Agency spokesman Rob Daniels says the agent was hiking yesterday near the Santa Cruz River when the mountain lion pounced.

The agent, he says, shot at the big cat, and it turned tail and ran away.

Daniels says it doesn't appear the mountain lion was hit.

Daniels told the Arizona Daily Star that encounters with wild animals are not uncommon for agents who spend time in remote areas.

Dang, is this a THR conspiracy? Two threads about mountain lions, one a tofu eating solution to mountain lions (throw sticks and dirt) and a second where human reminds animal who is on top of the food chain. (Mountain lion asks "What that California tofu eater a little stringy???)

If I saw one and fired a shot at it I'd say it "pounced" too. But my guess is that if the cat had really pounced he never would have gotten to his gun, or at least he would have some wounds to show for it.

This may not turn out all that well, from what I've heard, the Federal D.A has put the Lion in protective custody and has since become their star witness in it's attempted murder. The DA is dropping all charges against Leo the Lion of murdering numerous Mexican Nationals as it seems all evidence has long been reformulated into scat spread over a wide area which would make recovery impossible. Instead, the government has decided that prosecuting the BP Agent is much easier, will get the DA's name in the paper much more often, and will cater to his re-election campaign in a district that is affectionately known as, The Barrio, this idea came to the DA after witnessing the miraculous re-election of Mike Nifong. Prosecuting BP Agents is a less risky venture than going after Duke University Lacrosse Players whose wealthy parents control the Eastern Seaboard of CONUS. The DA already has the sympathy and backing of many idealistic groups such as La Raza, PETA and certain elements of the Sierra Club. Move over Jose Alonso Compean and Ignacio Ramos.

HEY, quit shooting at our "minuetman" mountain lions, they're there to protect our borders from the invasion, since our government won't,( he must have of gotten confused) we have given strict instructions to check for green cards before attacking

When I go hiking in the mountains of New Mexico I carry a concealed hand gun. I have seen the tracks in the snow on one hike. I also do a 360 degree check of the surroundings about every 15 or 20 seconds. Let's just say I keep them in mind.

Happy Landings!

We should send more cougars and grizzlies to the U.S./Mexico border. It will save on paying the ICE agents overtime for working 12-16 hour days. They also don't require medical benefits.
