If hunting with the rifle is a goal, another consideration with a platform that’s sacrificing some MV for packability is, “ At what range do projectiles slow below the speed required for reliable expansion?” Energy gets a lot of focus, but projectiles are designed for some minimum velocity to work properly, so this can sometimes be a limiting factor.

a 308 with a short barrel is good for hunting. if you want to shoot up to 8-900 yds a 308 24" barrel with CFE 223 powder can push a 175 gr match bullet near 2800 FPS

You can clap your hands at 130 dB
Try that and let me know how that works out :) The very Best can reduced db 30.6 so 166.2 db was one of My 7mm's so 135.6 db remains .

A single impulse sound, at a level of 137dB will cause instant damage to your hearing, but you are unlikely to suffer exposure to this kind of level unless you frequent the launchpad of a Space Shuttle ,fire high powered rifles on a regular basis or the Pit Lane in Formula One.

You are much more likely to damage your hearing without realizing it, over the course of many years by not paying attention to the sound level you are listening to in headphones and earpieces. Another occupational hazard is being in the Military ,I couldn't begin to even attempt a guess at how many rounds from a myriad of weapons ,MY ears have endured over 6 decades anyway . For myself personally it's far far too late to save any hearing . I do understand the reduction need but $1K for 22-30 db ISN'T practical in MY book . I use plugs with electronic muffs ,so NOTHING bothers my hearing . The rest of you are on your own . Try being a Rock bands music mixer for a decade and check your hearing loss . Worse than My own and I ran pneumatic hammer drill rigs 158 db when I was much younger even with ear plugs over wax inserts the drone was still ever present .

I agree with you that a 20" or longer barrel is best for long range shots. But I shoot my 16" Savage in an MDT stock to 800 yards pretty easily. Past 800 the extra velocity is extremely helpful. A lot depends on how long range the OP is going to be shooting.

The more I shoot my Cross (6.5CR), the more I like it. It took a while to adjust my expectations from what I was getting with my long range chassis bolt guns, but it's a great midrange crossover gun. And much nicer to carry around the woods where I hunt.

I think the OP needs to firmly decide what he really wants to use the rifle for or he is going to constantly be questioning himself and his purchase.
