I renewed my CCW permit a couple months ago, and the Instructor actually recommended a CCW badge. In the past he has said it was not a good idea, but he has changed his mind.

He is a Huntington Beach Police Officer, and his reasoning behind the badge is that if you display the badge while you actually use your CCW weapon (say, while holding a badguy at gunpoint), you might lessen the chance of some cop shooting you because you are holding a gun.

He said that if you are dressed as a civilian and you display a gun in front of a cop, then you are most likely going to get shot.
If a cop were to see that you are displaying a badge (say, clipped onto your belt), then they will most likely hesitate shooting you so that they could figure out what's up first.

There are multiple stories out there where off-duty cops have been shot and killed by uniformed officers because they are holding a gun when the officers show up on the scene.

So... I think a better question to ask would be:

True/False - If you are caught holding a gun in front of a cop you most likey will get shot.

I say True!

Like everyone else here, I have fantasized about being the only guy with a gun when a mass-murder situation goes down

Was that while you were fantasizing about how background checks and "common sense gun restrictions" would stop such things from happening?

very helpful to bg, nice little target. im sure they like knowing who to shoot first.

Wearing one would be a bad idea, defeating the whole reason you conceal in the first place. I suppose in the police scenario it might work.

Huh? I rarely conceal but would never buy a badge.

Hokiest idea ever.

IIRC They actually had a commercial for it
I could not find it on YouTube but it was like a Steven Seagal movie, Jean-Claude Van Dam movie, and episode of Walker Texas Ranger all rolled into one.

It is earning of Mall Ninja status.

What I want...

I might be over age 50, but you know what I want?

A replica of a Texas Ranger badge and then have the monies to be turned loose in this place and go nuts.

You can say what you want, but when my era was coming up, we never had any "Ruskies", "Germans", "Japs" or 'Injuns" - take over our neighborhood.

That store...oh...

Wait! I need a new gray cowboy hat, straw cowboy hat, bandanna, and spurs for my tennis shoes.

Go ahead and laugh, I can think of two dozen THR members, off the top of my head, that would have a good time playing with cap pistols again.

One Ranger - One Riot.

You can buy a replica Texas Ranger badge along with a set of "Old West" badges like Wild Bill Hicock or Wyatt Earp's. You just can't take delivery in the state of Texas.

They are marketed to the cowboy action shooters and the other re-enactor types.

I don't think that the point of the badge is to have it displayed all the time, just when you need it.
hmmm just like a real ccw permit..........

The CCW badge reminds me of the blue collar comedy tour "heres your sign" bit.

I'd rather have one of those "official US taxpayer" badges so I could at least pass it off as a joke and not look like an idiot mall ninja.

Yes, you do.

Concealed means concealed.

If you want to open carry, open carry. I've got no problem with that.

If you want a badge, apply for a job with the PD, or join the Boy Scouts.

Stupidest thing I've ever heard of, a badge. Do you wear a "Licensed Driver" badge?

It's a good way to jeopardize ALL of our permits, not just your own. Way too close to impersonating an officer of the law. Implies that the wearer is a wannabe Rambo, and would make me think that the wearer is an eighth of a bubble off, and potentially dangerous. I'd get the hell away from someone like that. "Stupid dork, with the sense of a turnip to boot" is what I'd think.

I also wonder if anyone who wears one of those things can do a pullup, or run 100 yards.

Gee AB, tell us how you really feel. Actually, I agree 100%. That's all the anti-gunners out there need is another "tool" to place in their box of "I hate guns" stupidity. :neener:

Why carry a badge? If you carry concealed keep it to yourself until the officer speaks to you then tell him you have a ccw and offer up your I.D. card. If it is a bad situation where the officer may mistake you for a perp. place your hands on the back of your head then tell him and tell him where the weapon is located on your person, although this situation would be very rare. With your ccw you need no badge because the ccw is the badge if you want to call it that.

I already look out of the ordinary. I won't even put an NRA decal on my truck. I like to fly under the radar as much as possible.

Yeah. I keep mine with me all the time. It helps me maintain my status as a low-drag/high-speed operator. With the badge, I can keep my hands free when the deal goes down... you know, when the evil-doers show up. I can take them down, secure the perimeter, make sure everything is 5x5, that sort of thing. Mine has a special kevlar coating. It can withstand anything up to 50bmg ap rounds. I can't tell you where I got it, as that would constitute a security breach. Watch your six guys! Over and out. Roger wilco. Secret handshake. See you back at HQ.

It is a bad idea, IMHO

It's a bad idea, but it has nothing to do with losing your permit (which we don't have here in WA anyway).

This is incorrect. Washington is a "shall issue" state. We do have concealed pistol licenses available to any resident who pays the fees, and passes the background checks etc. It requires you to submit to a questionaire, fingerprinting and waiting 30 days. They are available from the Sheriff or Police Department in whos' jurisdiction you reside.

As to wearing a badge with your gun or carrying one with your permit, it is a bad idea. You could possibly be charged with impersonating, not to mention, it could make you a target for the BGs.

If you want a real badge to go with your gun, become a cop or reserve officer. Most departments have reserve programs that allow the average citizen to get trained and outfitted as a LEO. In exchange, you give up your time in training and on patrol.

Why pretend to be something you are not?
