How would you feel about actually officially issuing a state-made CCW badge in addition to the cards we are given? Someone brought this up in the other CCW badge thread. I think it is worth some thought. This would not be a badge mall ninjas would or even could buy from gun rags or surplus stores. This would be a real badge given out by states or counties as part of the legal CCW license, used to identify oneself to police in an emergency.

Using the badge to actually impersonate an officer would still be illegal.

Pointless IMO. I don't want to have to carry around another piece of metal 24/7. If I needed to identify myself to a LEO in a shooting or something, then I would place the gun on the ground, put my hands in the air and state to them that I am licensed to carry. I would then follow any and all directions he/she gave me. There is no need to go flashing a badge around unless you are a LEO. If you want a badge, go through the steps like myself and become a cop, otherwise keep the badges at home.

No pointless and unnecessary, Plus who would pay for said tin star? the holder, another overpriced piece of junk to find a place for.

I agree also, pointless. I see it causing more problems than it would good.

If you are doing the shooting in an emergency then, chances are, there are no police around that you need to identify yourself too. The police won't be there until after the shooting has gone down and by then you should already have your weapon holstered and ID'd yourself to 911 when you called them to report the incident.

Of course once can think of situations where this would be useful, but I belive they are more fantastical than realistic. If the cops are there, they're going to do their job regardless of what you have pinned on your chest. I read something where Ayoob mentioned something similar when he said, 'When the cops show up, I'm dropping my gun and complying like everyone else because saying your a cop doesn't mean squat.'

There are to many posers in this day and age and someone would use it to impersonate a cop and give all ccw's a bad name.

[sarcasm switch on]

But, but, but.... What good is it to have a concealed weapon if nobody knows it?
I want a badge so I can show everybody that I'm really macho (armed and dangerous) without being in danger of being charged with flashing or brandishing if my gun "accidentally" is exposed.

At first, I thought the idea was, for lack of a better word, retarded. However, giving it a little more thought, I think it's not such a horrible idea, and perhaps in the wake of the Utah shooting, this idea has some merit. I don't like it enough to lobby for it, and I'm not sure I'd even vote for it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that while I'm not exactly FOR this, I'm not entirely against it either. Or at least not to the degree I origionally was.

I'm not by any means calling this a good idea, I just wouldn't really care if it happened or not.

I can see the pros and cons but I wouldn't want to have to pay for it, really wouldnt want to carry it. My license fits nicely in my wallet, just one more thing to keep up with.

I will say that having a CCW badge doesn't make one a poser, you could use the same argument about wearing 5.11 gear

A CCW badge would only serve to give the impression of authority where it doesn't exist, which I suppose is the main reason those things sell anyway. Your actual CCW license "card" is to identify you to the authorities if need be, the rest of the world has no need to know you have it or that you are carrying, which would defeat the purpose of having a CCW to begin with. After all concealed is the operative word!

As others have said, if you are involved in a shooting, holster your weapon, give your description to the 911 operator if possible and stand by with your hands where they can be scene. ID yourself verbally when the law shows up and do as your told. Don't move, don't reach for your gun or wallet, just wait and be compliant.

I already have one. At the top it says "Michigan Concealed Pistol License" and even has a nifty little picture of me on it.

I'm not a junior policeman, and I don't want to be. I don't need a badge and shouldn't need a permit. The police have a responsibility to sort out good guys from bad guys, at risk of their own lives if necessary. It’s part of the job.

It doesn't serve a purpose other than to cause potential confusion and liability for the carrier. It's a bad idea.

Another "no" vote. My only wish is a uniform style of CCW card so that it would be immediately recognizable no matter what state you were in.

Of course my even fonder pipe dream is to not need a CCW permit at all :scrutiny:

If you want one, just go ahead and buy one.. I don't think you need to get approval from people at THR. I just don't think many here will co-sign your wanting one. Myself included. It is too much like a JR LEO badge...

<Sarcasm> OOOH! Could we get cool dark windbreakers that have "CHL" in big yellow letters across the back? </sarcasm>

I'd fight that one tooth and nail to keep it from becoming law. If my gun gets exposed, it was either intentional and someone is gonna need to see my permit eventually, or it's unintentional and I need to do a better job of concealment.

In neither case does anyone need to see a badge. Unless you are an LEO, you do not need a badge.

Bad Idea

Undermines the entire "Concealment" concept. It smacks of "wannabe." I wouldn't wannabe mistaken for a LEO and the experience, authority and responsibility that goes with being one.

No offense intended, but I don't see any up side to this.

Badges are issued by government to government officials with inspection or law enforcement authority.

A CCW holder isn't a government official much less one with inspection or law enforcement authority and badges should not be issued to them.

A CCW holder doesn't have any special status. They've just jumped through some hoops that the government required them to jump through.

A CCW holder is just another citizen that is no more trustworthy than any other.

my buttocks are already sore from the credit card imprints sticking out from my wallet. i'd probably be hospitalized if you made me carry around one of those.

Make a photocopy of your supermarket bar codes, laminate them and carry those in your wallet. I've cut down about half an inch from my wallet by doing this.

As for the original post - my license already cost $100. I don't want to pay another $100 for a badge that I don't want to carry anyway.

At a time when there are record amounts of anti-gun legislation being proposed in various states, as well as a proposal to ban self-loading weapons, do we really have to engage in daydreams about further restrictions on our civil rights?
