when im in my fields mowing i often have coyotes pop up on me at 25yards and under. i carry my .22/22mag ruger single six for rabbits and woodchucks. and was wondering what if anything a .22mag/wmr would do to a coyote at close range. obviously a head shot. any experience or help would be appreciated. thanks

I'd be worried that I'd end up with a very P.O.ed coyote within 25 yards. Probably should pass unless you are in real danger.

Head or one thru the lungs would do the job. If those southern hunters can kill a hog with a .22 mag, coyote is lot thinner skinned that that. I would use a heavy grain JHP or solid and put one thru the lungs myself.

A 22 mag will do a coyote in fine at that range as long as you hit him in the vitals...head, heart, lungs, spine should put him down fine.

thanks for all the input guys. i have never personally shot a coyote with a 22mag but figured if a 22lr will kill a cow ( personally done it at my butcher job) it should kill a coyote.

Just remember... it's all about "location, location, location...." where ya put that bullet is what counts. Head shot or in the boiler room.

Coyotes

I have killed lots and lots of coyotes with .22 mag. Most with a caller. Pick my shots, Gotta be standing still unless shooting centerfire. I carry a Bearcat with .22 mag. cylinder for 4 wheeling or bird hunting, etc. Use .22 WRF 45 grain CCI's for hunting. Close shots are necessary, and practice.

That right there is the Clue!
Farmers very often have wild game "pop up" real close that the rest of us never get to see.

I've had deer, coyotes, coons, skunks, possems, ground hogs, and every sort of game bird in Kansas "pop up" at close range and just stand there looking at me on a tractor.

Wouldn't hesitate to shoot a coyote with a .22Mag and those I've taken with the .17HMR have all dropped on the spot.

While it wasn't killed with a .22Mag, this one "popped up" in the middle of my pasture as I was walking by, about 100yds away. One reason why I never walk out the door without something that goes bang. A 165gr cast bullet from a 100yr old .30-30 did the job.

Here's another, a big fox taken with one shot from a .22LR Single Six. The .22Mag will do just fine on a coyote with proper placement.

Wild animals often see a human on a tractor as just a tractor and react entirely differently than to a human on foot.

Kansas coyotes also clearly know the differance between farm machinery and pick-up trucks too.

Many pick-up's have rifles in the cab or coyote hounds in the back.

Coyotes aren't stupid. That's how they've managed to proliferate for so long. They're also predators. They're not interested in winning as much as they are in surviving...uninjured if possible. They also understand what gunfire is, and what it means when one of their pack starts screaming and rolling around on the ground.

Even if they've never been fired on until that second...they associate the sound with a wounded pack member, and they don't press their attack after it happens...if there was any plan of attack to begin with.

I've seen Coyotes "pop" up from out of nowhere...watch for a minute...and disappear to parts unknown. Most of the time, it's out of curiosity, or they've been surprised. They're very good at sizing you up and determining if there's any risk involved. If you look big enough to present a danger, they usually split, or at most...they hang around and watch for a while, and then melt away into the underbrush.

The danger with Coyotes is mainly in surprising one...like in your garbage can. If he feels cornered...he'll attack. Always leave Mr. Yote an exit, and he'll take it almost without exception unless he's rabid or at the point of death from starvation...and even then, he'll usually run.

not to jump topic but: what year is your old model single six?

it looks similar to mine i just bought. mines a 6.5 barrel blade front and drift rear sight.
mine shoots great groups at 15 yards. how does your shoot?

1963, although last year I swapped out the grip frame for an earlier XR3 and had it fitted with fancy claro walnut. It's a wonderful shooter and constant companion. I'm doing my best to wear it out without much luck. ;)

I've had lots of'em "pop-up" when I got close. Then they hit the end of the trap chain lol!!!22lr out of a pistol has worked just fine for me,i'm sure if you put the bullet in the "good stuff" your mag. will work just fine also.

Wow nice pics, Craig. And nice shootin. That's a pretty darn good shot on that coyote at 100 yards. Glad you had a camera handy -even if it meant runnin to get one. Thanks for posting those.

You must remember that a 22mag out of a handgun is about the same as a 22lr. Head shot will put it down, a lung shot will take awile longer, but do the job.
IMHO, I would not use a 22mag or a 22lr on coyotes, You have to have the respect for the animal and kill it quickly. I think you should use a larger cal.

Not typical to do, but we all have heard of the .22 LR dropping a deer size game. I have seen it first hand by management permits, and game wardens.
There isn't a doubt in my mind that a .22 LR @ 50 yards with a heart/lung shot would drop a coyote in its tracks. All animals react differently. Some run, and some don't.

I have seen a few deer shot in the heart with a .22 LR (again as mentioned/not poached), and they just fall over. Then again some run, and that is an animal that is 3x or more larger than a coyote.

Within 50 yards shots would be as follows:

ear/head
neck
heart
lung/spine.

Any of those shots, and you either have a DRT, or you have a flopping dog. In my mind I feel the caliber in question is completely adequate for the task at hand.
