C'mon, guys. (accuracy claims)

If you want to know what the qualifications of a Marine Sniper are, go to google and type in Marine Scout Sniper MOS. I was never a Marine but I shot on three Army rifle teams quite awhile ago. I never even got close to Presidents Hundred but I did get a chance to see some of those who did. A dime size target at 1000 yds would have those guys laughing at the brag. There were no dime size targets, there were bulls and they were black when I shot. At that, bench and rifleman are two different things. I could hit the target from the bench but a rifleman is the guy who comes under fire and lives to talk about, or just lives and tries to forget.

Even though there are lots of exaggerated claims on group sizes on the net, please don't dismiss all as bs. As a former match director of various disciplines, I've seen many amazing results by shooters competing with factory, semi and custom rifles.

dubbleA, you have a very nice set up there for sure but how do your neighbors feel about you "ringing steel" at 6:00am?!! :D Looks like zero wind that morning i.e. a perfect day for load development.

:)

Great shooting as usuall, doubleA! Bet you were at 100yrds though, cause nobody can shoot that well!!:D

Just kidding, I've had the pleasure of getting smoked by you in the AR matches:)

MJ, SVT40? Nice honest group.

Well, compared to what I see here, I should stay in the sandbox with my Red Ryder. :) Bought some B-27s, gonna see what my little ol Czech carbine can do at 200 yards...if I get the time this week.

perhaps take a moment to do some research. its not impossible. just not believable by anyone thats never seen it. i have a hard time believing it myself, but i never assume that something is entirely false until i know for sure. i have seen a documentary on long range weapons used by the military. they fired a laser guided missile from a carrier ship in the middle of the ocean and put it down a chimney a thousand miles away.

got a buddy over in iraq pickin off towelheads at 900+ yards with headshots. to qualify for his position as a sniper he had to hit a target the size of a dime at 1,000 yards 3 times with a 100% average. doesnt sound like luck to me. might i also add that the military can put a missile within 1/8 of an inch of the intended target from thousands of miles away... repeatedly. as for civilian weapons i consider 3-500 yards with a high powered rifle a good shot. it takes patience and practice to become a good shot, and someone with the time to invest can certainly exceed any of your expectations whether you believe it or not. someone out there is alway better. take a look at the guy who hits a clay pigeon 8 times with a 12 gauge pump before it falls below the treeline. there is no such thing as impossible. keep that in mind.

Man, the 1000m group size record is something like 4.2 inches from a bench rest rifle.http://www.6mmbr.com/page/page/1309618.htm I will guarantee that your sniper friend isn't touching this record. It is the record for a reason. A dime is closer to .5 inches. As to head shots... at 900y, maybe but I bet he is doing body shots. There isn't any need to waste ammo.

When I was in the military, we used meters for our ranges, not yards. You are talking 914.xx meters for that 1k yard shot. I know several snipers, and none of them will claim that level of shooting ability. The hardest claim I have heard was keeping it on a 5x7 index card out to 900m.

i cant say i have seen this kind of accuracy, i do have my doubts, and questions like any other person would, but i wont immediately claim it isnt true. pistol wise best pattern i can keep is 2.5 inches at 50 yards with a .45... on a good day. ive only pulled that off once. with a .22 rifle i can hit a spent 12 gauge shell at 250 yards. (with a scope of course). i wont claim that im the best because i rapid fire alot. i rely mostly on shorter distance accuracy. someone a quarter mile away from me really doesnt pose an immediate threat. someone on the other side of my house in the middle of the night definately waves some red flags.

FWIW, the 50bmg 1000 yd record was broken last year. It was held for years by the late Skip Talbot @ 2.600. I never expected the record to be broken, but it was. New record is 1.955 for five shot group.

Funny, the OP was about guys bragging about their shooting. Hence most of the posts were what? Guys bragging about shooting. LMAO. You guys are funny. A big reason I'm here is too find factual evaluations of different weapons but it sure gets hard to sort fact from beyond fiction sometimes.
But don't stop because it beats watching reruns on TV.

Oh that's nothing. When I put in a 4187 for Sniper School from the 1st Cav I had to attach targets showing a dime-sized group at 1000 meters ... standing on my head, and I had to shoot the wings off a fly at 600 meters with an M16A2. The actual fly had to be taped to the 1000 meter target and a field grade officer had to sign off as a witness. Marines ... sheeesh. :p

Oh good lord. Where does this crap come from? :banghead:

Ffffft! My grand dad could knock the soda out of a bisquit at 100 yards and not break the crust! I know it's true because he told me so!

Well, it was a bench gun, and only 100 yards, and I missed the wings and got the whole fly, but not bad. I got him with one shot.

I don't want that fellow shooting the wings of flies at 600 yards shootin' at me!

The red flags are waving on your posts too...

2.5" with a handgun at 50 yards. Could you please state what the weapon and ammunition were?

I'm not saying that it isn't possible. Hell I once took a pot shot at a Spruce Grouse (on the ground, not flying) at 25 yards with my XDm 40 using 180gr WWB FMJ, first and only shot entered just above the wing ricocheted off the spine and exited the birds butt (messy) tasted ok after cleaning though. I'm just saying given the veracity of your previous statements I have doubts.

Well I once hit a running pheasant with my 22/45, at 125yrds:neener:

But it took me 5 shots, 4 of them were windage and elevation adjustments, the 5th rolled him.

I shot a flushing quail with a .38 S&W one time. (Model 31) I don't expect anyone to believe it, but I did.
