Cobray M-11 technical question-

I'm at work (Police), and an Officer just brought in a Cobray M-11. He asked if it was a Prohibited Weapon (Texas) or not. I stated 'no', since it's basically just a 9mm handgun. Not wanting to give ONLY a flippant answer, I cracked it open to show him the sear connect prevents it from going "full-auto." Well, when I had it open, the hammer would not lock back if the trigger was held completely to the rear. If you released the trigger 1mm or so, the hammer would engage and catch the sear, waiting for reset (release of trigger) and then you could pull the trigger again dropping the hammer. So basically, what it LOOKED like to me, was that if one were to keep the trigger depressed, the hammer would slam-fire and continue to fire until the magazine was empty. Perhaps I'm missing something obvious, like the carrier would recock the hammer AND this could only happen if the trigger were released by 1mm or so. Therefore re-engaging the sear. I have only theoretical evidence, as I was not permitted to actually take the handgun to the range to test (yes, I asked!)

I had two of these years ago, but can't remember this particular technical characteristic. Anybody got one that can try it out at home and let me know? I'm just trying to figure out if the owner converted this particular firearm to slamfire or if it's factory spec. Thanks!
 
Try your little test with the weapon in the closed position.

Hold the trigger back and manually cycle the bolt with the magazine out of the pistol.

If the hammer follows the bolt forward you have a problem, if it stays back, releasing the trigger will reset the disconnector and allow for the next shot.

When the gun is in the field stripped position the bolt is not putting pressure on the disconnector and the hammer is free to move back and forth with the trigger held to the rear.

A field stripped 1911 handgun will do the exact same thing and is a good comparison display to show the function and relation of the disconnector to the upper receiver and bolt assembly. hth
