Voters being what they are, never really looked much at what was going on behind the scenes,

I'm afraid the rest of us (at least in "red" states) can muster only limited sympathy for prople who " never really looked much at what was going on behind the scenes,". Not to preach, but you must pay attention and you must do your best to rally fair-minded citizens to your cause.

I'm a little skeptical though, as it would seem that the local GOP would have a say in who joined the party as a candidate, and more importantly, who got the nominations for office.

Like I said, I hope someone else who was more involved then can fill in the details. However, I also distinctly remember after the '94 federal congressional election, a whole bunch of House of Representative (D)s changed themselves to (R). No one seemed to have a problem with it.
