Pretty sad, and unnecessarily inflammatory assumption/accusation from you.
No, I was specifically speaking of what my reaction would be to the request.

Sure, the office was noble and all.

But, really, at the time he was no more than a visiting civilian. His duties to the Constitution no greater than mine in that self same place. Within the jurisdiction an LEO is sworn to, his responsibilities are greater, and his authority much more specific.

Outside of those bounds he is but a man, not a king. Prick him and he doth bleed, as a man will.

The premise is flawed all the way around, even if selfless and noble. Stand by a door, out of uniform, with no pro gear, carrying a stranger's weapon, and nothing but a badge in the other hand for an aegis of authority?

Good grief. Lots of questions here. How'd the Minneapolis officer know John Rich was carrying?

I bet that's one cop who doesn't leave his gun at home on vacation anymore.

I view this the same way I view lending knives. If you have to ask to borrow my knife, the odds are good I can't trust you to use it properly. Since if you could use a knife properly, you wouldn't need to ask to borrow mine.

Plenty of cops are much better shooters than me, plenty have more training. But... I bet most of those wouldn't need to borrow my gun in that situation.

Lesson learned.
