Do you expect a new AWB?

I ask because its tax refund season and I am planning a major firearms purchase. Either a few handguns for fun and HD or a nice rifle or shotgun. I am considering purchasing an AR-15 with a telescoping stock, permanently installed Bushmaster izzy flash suppressor, and 30 rd. mags. I do believe this would fall under the previous AWB that sunset 2 years ago.

I'd really like the handguns, but am not sure if I ought to risk waiting another year or two to purchase one.

What's your honest opinion?

The Dems will get the Whitehouse and there will be some really nasty legislation.

It's time to shore up and dig in. Face it, the Republicans screwed up their opportunities and we will all pay the price.

Ditto that.

If we get a dem congress along with a dem president, you can count on a lot of new and repeat gun control laws. The AWB will return IMHO.

It's already in the works. They'll be coming with it before the end of the second session.

If you have the ability you need to be buying up as many "evil" guns as you can and this includes NFA items.

I suspect you'll be alright in KY. During the last federal AWB, guns owned were grandfathered. Here in CA, we still live under our own AWB.

The question isn't whether, but how moronic and how soon—unless, of course, those representatives of the Democratic (sic) party who respect the Second Amendment...

Uh...

Never mind. No point in talking about imaginary friends.

I think I will go ahead and get it then. I really have no bills except what I have out for student loans that are already factored into my purchasing of weapons for this year.

What supplies/parts for this ought I stock up on (just in case)? As for NFA weapons the only one within my price range that I am considering aside from the AR is the Vector 53. Its a toss up between the two. Wouldn't mind having a supressor though.

What would happen if they do not grandfather me in and I already owned one?

I expect one if the Dems win in 2008. If the American people are really as stupid and blind as they were in the last Congressional election, then we may be in for a really long, crappy time until 2012. Vote Republican or Libertarian!! Anything but Democrat!! They have too much power as it is, and they're bad for guns, health care, the economy, taxes, etc.... Do you need any more reasons to vote against them? I sure as heck don't!!

In light of this, I bought a WASR 10 for Xmas. At this point, I plan on picking up either a Kel-Tec P32 or Sub-2000 before the 08 elections. Maybe more (if I can afford it).

What would happen if they do not grandfather me in and I already owned one?

Well, in theory, that would make you (and all of us) criminals, and they might storm door to door Katrina style and attempt to confiscate our weapons. Remember, registration always precedes confiscation. They can't confiscate what they don't know exists.

Take a stab at it, Jorg.

As Juna said, they would probably have amnesty turn-ins for a set period of time and then after that you'd be committing a crime by possessing one. Depending on how deep your JBT thug fantasies run, it could be anything from going door to door with metal detectors or like the story floating around of having your family do the right thing and turn you in.

Frankly, I can't imagine a bill without some sort of grandfather clause passing. I wouldn't lose sleep over grandfather clauses.

Look, people were saying that there would be an AWB/.50 caliber ban/total gun ban the second Pelosi walked through the door. Some were saying by the end of January. While there has been some gun legislation introduced, it has been sent to committee and none of it even approached any kind of sweeping. While there is no doubt something will be proposed, none of us know when or how exactly things are going to go down. I know that a lot of gun owners seem to experience some kind of thrill through constantly fretting about "the ban" on the internet for some inexplicible reason. If you are really concerned about it, get involved now. Join the appropriate organizations, take someone new shooting, write your letters, and vote. All the hand-wringing on the internet isn't going to make a lick of difference when it comes down to it.

I simply refuse to live my life in fear that someone is going to come and take my guns. I think I do my part. I encourage others to do theirs. Most of all, I enjoy what I have today. It is one thing to be aware of what is going on around you and in the world. It is another thing altogether to worry day to day that they are coming for you. If that is how you live, you've already traded in your freedom.

Don't get me wrong, if you really want something that might be banned, by all means, make a plan to get it. But if you do get it, take the time to enjoy it. Don't stash it away worrying about when the bad men are coming for it.

If you are worried about a ban and trying to decide between an AR-15 type rifle and handguns, I would go for the AR-15 first. Pistols with hi-cap magazines might be an issue, but that depends on the pistol. I would guess that if you were interested in a revolver or shotgun, those would be nearer to bottom of the list in the steps to a total ban.

You may want to disregard everything I've said as someone will be by shortly to declare that I'm some kind of ignorant blissninny that can't see the writing on the wall and that we are all doomed. :)

What supplies/parts for this ought I stock up on (just in case)?
Pick a gun. Buy a decent number of magazines ( at least 4-6, a gun with a broken magazine is useless. The more the better - they might make good barter material in the future), and stock up at least a few cases of ammo (I wouldn't want to be forced to buy my 5.56, 7.62x51 or 7.62x39 at even todays prices, much less next year's.). Put spares last on the list and keep it to high wear items like extractors firing pins, buffers and springs, although barrels could potentially be targeted as controlled items. A second identical gun would of course be best.

Remember GWB was willing to sign an AWB

Buy now and as much as can be afforded, because all too soon they'll be banned.

Oh for the love of God... first off... be vigilant, but take a breather. The paranoia on this topic is enough to give one a heart attack. It's not like there are ONLY Democrats in congress. There will always be people to challenge these bills. Secondly, this time around there are more avenues to get information about impending bans out. In 1994, we did not have the internet or an alternative to mainstream media. Now we do. Third, there will be no door to door confiscation. It costs a lot of money to confiscate weapons. They'll grandfather them at the bare minimum. Most likely, they'll just reinstitute the old AW ban. Any more than that, you start getting into hunting rifles, any less than that, why would the liberals have a ban in the first place. Fourthly, the number of AW owners is exponentially larger now than it was in 1994. As I have said ad infinitum on similar threads, most people 30 and under, tend to purchase assault rifles exclusively. If you don't hunt like many of us younger folk, hunting rifles seem kind of pointless, AWs are where the fun is. Fifthly, quit being so damned scared of the liberals. Do you all like living in fear? I seriously think some of you do. Be pro-active and challenge this crap that they keep trying to send our way. If there's one thing that can be universally said about most politicians, it's that they're dumbasses. It's said on THR (in more eloquent terms usually), but it's generally accepted. So outsmart these dolts and don't let them take your guns. Students, disseminate pro-2A ideas in class discussions. Guys, take your gals (or other guys if that's your thing) out shooting- specifically, assault weapons or anything that people want to ban. Next time the politicians go on TV and say, "Gun owners favor a ban on AWs," work to get one of our guys on there to say, "No, we don't want a ban on AWs". We have to hit these guys where it counts and since none of 'em have any balls, I mean the jugular.

Yes...it's just one of those stylish things for those on the left like going after to look good to their constituants. Then they can say they're being tough on crime yadda yadda :cuss:

John McCain would never take our guns away!
He is a scumbag and cannot be trusted. He would take our guns if it meant an extra vote or two...
