Do You Have an Expendable Gun?

The problem is that if you are arrested for the use of a firearm, the first thing a judge will do during your arraignment is instruct you to turn in ALL firearms in your possession until you are adjudicated. Failure to do so is another crime you can be charged with and is contempt of court which can bring jail time. You can then TRY to get them back after you are found innocent. I know it sucks, but that's the way it is.

That is 'if' I am arrested.

If not, I'll need another gun.

See in Texas we have the 'Stand Your Ground' law as well as the 'Castle Doctrine'.

As long as it's a good shoot I'll be fine.

Even Zimmerman was not arrested to begin with.

Quintessential "throw away" gun is something in 9x18 from behind now extinct "Soviet Wall". You know: FEG, PM, P-64,......

I feel all my guns are expendable when it comes to defending my, or my families lives, cost of the gun is irrelevant because after all they are just tools. I don't put much respect for anyone who thinks otherwise.

Yes. Makarov. It's used because it's good enough and "I don't give a this or that what happens to it." Already rusted enough somewhere I had to wipe off the accumulated water, strip it a bit, spray it with sticky motorcycle chain lube to stop the rest of the rusting, and just threw it in a plastic bag. Who cares -- it's a MAKAROV!

There is nothing I own I'd trade my life for much less a gun. Things are things and its just a thing. I can always get another if I'm alive. I carry what I consider I shoot and carry best. If that goes I go into the safe and pull out another of the two just like it inside.

There are times when posts get made I just don't understand, this is one of them.

I would gladly let any of these sit in the property room till they were released. The Det Spl and the S&W Mod 15 have already been there once each.

I've had seven surgeries in the last two years.

My medical expenses were enough to buy a whole slew of nice guns.

My life is worth more than any gun I may ever own. Literally. So, I don't worry too much about a gun being taken for evidence. If it ever comes to that, then I've already saved a huge amount of money, and even more importantly, my life.

I wouldnt really miss my Hi-point all that much. I put some work into it but only because i didnt really care if i tore it up.

Its been one of the most fun guns ive bought because what all ive done to it but its cheap enough i could just go out and get another one if i wanted.

I seriously doubt that most people EDC their beautiful $1000 or so firearms.
Me, too. Yet, there are so many here I've seen in other threads that speak down on people who carry sub-one-grand guns.

Why do you gentlemen doubt this?

I posted previously thinking only about theft and loss. I do not dwell on what the cost was of my EDC gun(s). Reliability, proficiency and comfort are the only thing on my mind when making the choice as to what to carry..

Do any of you keep or rely on something you consider "expendable"?

Yes.

I have two KelTecs for carry that I consider expendables. If they weren't returned to me after police seizure following a shooting, I wouldn't shed any tears. But I would consider the two hundred dollars + change I spent on each to be money well spent.

I don't have one but I would like an arcus or canik for just such a reason.

experimenting with, loaner, truck gun or just plain take out and abuse. a gun for that purpose would be nice.

All my carry guns are Glocks. Reliable, combat accurate, durable, and replaceable.

OTOH, if I need to defend lives, I would not pass up my Les Baer to go get a Glock....

I guess I have lost my faith in the legal/justice system. Too much government, too much bureaucracy, too man bureaucrats that don't have respect for the common man or his possessions anymore. Too many accounts of police being reckless with guns they confiscate, wrongfully considering that they are now "property" of the state (after being taken for evidence in a shooting, etc), and subject to more bureaucratic crap before it is decided if they will EVER be returned to their owners. Good grief! The incident and case of a shooting will pass, but the gun will go on, somewhere, just as life will for the owner (if he survived the incident), and from "due process", will the sovereignty of ownership and dignity of the citrizen be recognized and respected? THAT is why I brought this topic up. It is a shame that we even have to WORRY or be concerned about how well our property will be treated by the police. Maybe we should make it a crime to be reckless while in the care of other people's property, and hold the police accountable if they don't return it in the same shape they get it. In the meantime, I carry fine guns, and some that I would not miss, and I leave which one I'll have in hand in time of need to fate.

^ I have thought about this.

The gun I carry 97% of the time is not particularly rare, exotic or expensive. But it is my very first gun - and if law enforcement has to take it for evidence, then I sure as heck want it back ASAP!

My "next-in-line" gun would be considered "better" by about 24 out of 25 of polled THR members. And I'm glad I have it. Wouldn't negate the fact that I'd want my first gun back. Not one bit.

As many have stated, if I have to use the gun to save my bacon and it comes through for me on that, then I will consider it a job well done and I can let it go if it comes to that. In much the same way that if a lightning storm causes a surge and your surge protector operates as designed and saves your electronic items, on paper you are supposed to discard said surge protector and buy a new one; it has done it's job*. Same concept.

Although I like most everything I have, only a couple of things in my possession even approach being extraordinary on any level whatsoever. I'd hate to lose them in a 'good' shoot, but they can go too if they have to.

* You knew that... right?

If one of my guns, whether it's a Kel-Tec P32 or a Colt Commander, saves my or my family's bacon in a violent encounter, it will have done its job. If I don't have to replace it afterward, that's icing on the cake. Never get so attached to a tool that you hesitate to use it when needed, or pick an inferior tool to start with.

My backup gun is a $1200.00 S&W 340PD airweight .357Mag. My main gun is a Sig 226 in 357Sig so I carry about $2000.00 worth of EDC I carry them because they work for me not the cost. Add another 500.+ for the crimson trace grips.

I use the Noah's Ark method of buying firearms.

I have at least two of everything I normally carry and shoot. Multiple Glocks, multiple ARs and multiple 870s. If one of them ever ends up in an evidence locker or if I want or need gunsmithing work done to one, I always have a spare.

Just my .02,

I have a Spesco .38 revolver, that appears to be a lower-tier model made by Taurus. It functions well, just not a good target gun, but it sees duty as a garage and truck gun. Think I only paid $200 for it, reckon it could be considered expendable.

I think a non-expendable firearm is something in terms of a rifle that was handed down to you by your great grandfather, not a run-of-the-mill Glock or AR/AK etc.

Most guns are expendable, but IMO some are not. Intrinsic and sentimental value are something to consider. A firearm you bought at a LGS or gunshow is expendable, while something you personally customized or have been handed down through generations is not.

In that regard, all mine are expendable.

My problem is with someone ELSE deciding that I don't need it anymore. It become part of the fundamental protections and concept of free men, and what is their personal domain. If we truly ARE this government of the people, then no bureaucrat (by definition a servant OF the people in this country) can deprive us of what is ours.
