Do you know a pro gun cop?

I know no fewer than 5 that are very pro-gun, pro-ccw. I've had all 5 of them at different times tell me they appreciate ccw folks and tend to give them breaks on traffic stops as they are the "good-guys."

I work with the same 3 cops each night at work and 2/3 are very pro gun the other one has a bit of the "why do you need that" attitude on some stuff but still generally reasonable.

Off the top of my head I can think of over a dozen here and in the surrounding counties. Heck, some of them are collectors and work in the local gun shops. Some just hang out in them.

I am one as well. But I was pro-gun before I got into law enforcement because that's how I was raised and how I'm raising my children. If you're seeing cops that aren't pro-gun, and that is becoming more and more common, especially in urban areas, then you're seeing people who's only exposure to guns is through the job. They were never raised around them, never taught to use and enjoy them safely, and now that they are adults they see guns only as tools in their hands and threats in the hands of others.

Being in the private security industry I've worked with LEO's all over the nation.

In my experience most of them I've worked with are pro-gun. Very few I've met are against private citizens carrying (legally of course).

You'll always have the few who are against it.

even here in Texas I am sure you will find a few that lean towards the anti-establishment...but all the LEO's I know are Pro 2A. Even know one Democrat LEO and he is Pro 2A as well.

Yes, I know a very pro-gun LEO that frequents online gun forums such as this one.

In fact, I met him through another large gun forum. I have since been to his home a dozen or more times and we have hit the range together several times as well.

I've met a lot of pro 2A cops, one in particular shoots at the local public range often. He builds his own black powder rifles, and is an endless source of knowledge about firearms. The guy is a regular Daniel Boone when it comes to accuracy with a Flintlock

WC145:

I suspect you hit the nail squarely on the head. Where I grew up (and now live) - it's more rare to find people who didn't grow up around firearms. Folks like these see the "big picture" and value of firearms for everyone in daily life - not just "tools" for the job and/or "weapons" of the "bad guys".

I know quite a few. In fact they have carried me to the range used by their department to shoot many times.

More than most that I knew in Alabama were very good, now that I'm in CA I've known one who is good and haven't really spoken with many others but gather it's a mixed bag at best here in Santa Clara Co. :(

I am one myself. What WC145 said is true of the anti's in my department. But then again, I don't really consider them anti, just uninformed. They are never around them away from work and see them only as a tool of the job and can't see why people need them other than hunting. They also do not see a need for me and many of the other officers to own AR's or multiple pistols. I recently bought an XD45 and had another officer ask, "Why did you get that, you already carry a Glock 45? You can't carry two at one time can you?" I'm still working on him:)

I know a few that I know are are pro-gun. They used to hang out at the range.

Most of the LEOs in my area seem indifferent. I came across one that semed like an elitist anti, but that was in a different county.

I shoot from time to time with an ex-State Police LEO who now works as a federal marshal. I'm friends with a retired city LEO (he's now the head of public safety at a local college) who has invited me to shoot on his property. I would describe both of these gentlemen as positively pro gun but not aggressively so. They simply enjoy their guns, their right to shoot, and the merits of the Second Amendment. They also are both exceptionally knowledgable about all things firearms and good guys to know.

I guess my dad counts...he just retired after 20 years as a state trooper, in a "not-too-keen" on guns state--NJ.
I'll never forget discussing the US Constitution with him, and he said: "Well, the second amendment makes the others possible."
He's always supported self-defense, and is a bit jealous of Florida's CCW laws.
So there's another one, huh?

"Do you know a pro gun cop?"

Yeah, ME!
But, unfortunately, I am a rare breed around here!

I never owned a gun in my life, until an LEO (friend) suggested not only I should get a firearm, but I should get a CCW.

I (not being into guns at all at the time) asked why, and he explained cops basically show up and secure the scene after a home invasion, fill out a report, and watch the bodies carted out.... they don't show up in time (911 call) to save the day. :uhoh:

He actually went on to say it was irresponsible to be a family man and NOT own a gun... and naively hope the police would always protect you. This is coming directly from an LEO and a SWAT member. :scrutiny:

I've known one all my life...me. I was an LEO for only 31 years which is still most of my life.

I worked a a municipal police officer and as a Federal LEO. When I was a police officer in NEW JERSEy no less about 10% of the guys were very pro-gun (topic of conversation in the patrol car on a regular basis). I went to work for the Federal Goverment and started in Arizona. Everyone in the office was pro-gun and we had guys from NJ, DC, TX, SC, NY, MI, CA and 2 guys from AZ. I came back to NJ and once again the percentage was abouty 10% pro-gun and at the other end about 10% who even thought they shouldn't even have a gun. There was about 10-20% who don't fit your definition of pro-gun but really didn't care if people had guns.

I have never known a cop that was not pro gun. I am sure anti gun cops exist, but I believe they are the exception, not the rule.
The person that talked my wife into learning to shoot, and carry is a cop.
