Do you know a pro gun cop?

23 years a LEO and a life long pro gun person. I know many officers who are pro gun, in fact most officers are pro gun. Seems the higher you go the more political you get and the more squishy you get. However I am proud to say as a chief for 15 years I was a strong pro gun chief, encouraged people to get CCW and was an instructor for CCW.
Had many a battle with chiefs over the issue but very very few with working officers.

The most recent conversation I had with a police officer about guns was at a Halo 3 night at a local volunteer fire department a few months ago (you've never seen Halo 3 played until you've seen off-duty firefighters playing 8-on-8 H3 on HD projectors at midnight). We chatted between games, and he talked about how accurate Black Hills ammunition was in his AR-15--his own, not a department-issue carbine. I think he said he could easily shoot a quarter at 100 yards with the Black Hills match ammo, but it was pricey stuff. We discussed civilian AK's; he said he regretted selling his and was looking to get another one, and I said I thought their main weak point was the sights and that a red-dot optic made mine much easier to shoot accurately. We also grumbled about the insane cost of ammo these days.

A pretty good number of local officers here shoot IPSC/USPSA, and the sheriff's deputy who took my prints for my CHL application said that he thought CHL's should be free of charge to all qualified applicants, instead of the state charging the current hefty fees.

The range I used to frequent was owned by a pro-gun cop. He sold it and retired years ago, and I don't know where he went, but I hope it was someplace he really enjoys. He was all for Michigan changing their ridiculous laws concerning carry. I wonder if he now knows we did. He was a great guy and we needed more like him. I Don't know any now.

I cop comes into my shop just about everyday. When I was thinking about buying a gun we talked about it and he encouraged me. When he found out I decided to get a .22LR he was kind of disappointed. He keeps telling me that I should get a bigger gun, but I will learn to shoot my .22LR first, then I can convince my wife to let me buy a .357 or 45acp

I guess nobody's done this yet, so:

Dave McCracken

And that's just the misfits who work here.

a truly 100% pro gun cop..... by my definition, they are few.
several I have seen do support the right to defend yourself with a gun, CCW and all.
Its when Open Cary happens in public, while kosher to the letter of the law, bad often happens and that same officer is then giving a lawful citizen a tour of the station house.
another sore spot for both LEO's and many non LEO's alike, is the topic of airsoft guns.
most LEO's blow a gasket over this one, citing how they could confuse, and often say something to the effect of " I'd hate to have to make that call"
Many non LEOs also share this view of airsoft as well.
As a stand alone topic, airsoft is like napalm.
Sorry folks, but we cannot afford to throw any gun under the bus without paving the way to the eventual loss of all of them.
So if we are talking about absolute 100% pro-gun on either side of the PD fence .... it gets shockingly thin

then I can convince my wife to let me buy a .357 or 45acp

The let me buy? Wow. See if you can convince the boss to allow a 9mm, more useful than both the choices you looked at.

I'm a pro-gun cop. I teach CCW along with my chief and another officer. One of our other officers has a confirmed prairie dog kill at 1,046 yards. All the guys on the force except for a few are interested in each others' latest and greatest toys.

All the guys I know at the sheriff's office are pro-gun, in fact, the U.S. Marshal for our district is pro-gun. Anti-gun cops (which I define as those who don't believe "civilians" should be armed) are decidedly in the minority.

There are some rookies who are a little uneducated, but we bring 'em right along on the RKBA. The gun culture is alive and well in law enforcement in NW Arkansas.

I know plenty.

Our sheriff has already given me assurances that he will sign off on my Class III endeavors I get myself into.

I know about 2 Dozen sheriff, local and state officers. Every one I know is Pro gun and 2 work at the gun shop I used too.

In my department, out of 20 officers, there are 2 "gun gurus" - firearms instructiors, and probably about 5 others that are pro gun. The rest are not gun people, and just have the gun as a tool.

Back a few years ago, I got into an accident in downtown DC. Was about to make a left, and the guy behind me swerved around and nailed me in my front wheel-well. The cops came, and wrote him a ticket. A couple of them said they agreed with my bumper stickers. One growled about how the only handgun he could possess in DC was his duty Glock. He'd rather have carried a 1911 off-duty.

I've also caught some breaks when being pulled over in VA, after the cop saw my CHP.

I consider myself to be the very progun / molon labe / gun whorish type individual.

My partner is also the same way. We sit in the car for a 10 hour shift and hardly talk about anything else but guns and gear!

I would say that out of the 19 officers at my dept.....that I would find it difficult to find one thats not into guns for hunting and such. There is not one guy in the dept that is ANTIGUN.

My best friend is a pro-gun cop. My favorite uncle is a pro-gun cop. The most pro-gun cop I know is a PT Deputy who also owns a gun store.

I appreciate any good man who is willing to work within such a corrupt system to try to make a difference, just like I appreciate a good man who works in politics, or the government education systems. All three systems are fatally flawed, but there are still good people interspersed throughout. It is good to read some examples in this thread.

I have considered joining the Sheriff's department here where I live and trying to do my part. I just keep wrestling over whether or not I could justify the good that could be done vs some of the BS that is part of the job. I do know that if some good people werent doing it though, things would be a lot worse and more corrupt than they already are. My hat is off to you guys who are able to fight the good fight!

Don Gwinn : And that's just the misfits who work here.
Dang - that's what I was thinking... It seems like half the mods here at THR are LOE or ex-LEO.

I wouldn't call any of them anything short of staunchly pro-gun.

I don't "know" any cops. Except for THR, I don't really travel in circles where I'd be likely to. Those that I've made acquaintance with in social situations (maybe 2 or 3), I was unable to tell as the conversation did not go that way.

There are two that I've made acquaintance with in an official capacity that I can recall. One chatted me up about my carry gun, then gave me a ticket. He was sort of weird. The other gave daughter #2 a ticket after she bounced her car off an Escalade. I saw he had a P220 and asked him about it. He was nice and expressed a preference for it. Mildly pro-gun was my read.

Finally, I do know a Federal Air Marshal. He can chat knowledgeably about guns if they come up. But my read on him is that he is pretty indifferent guns in general. Live and let live sort of guy. He says he has the most boring job in the world. I asked once what he thought of carry on planes. He shrugged and said that in all his years, nothing has even happened to cause him to even have to get out of his seat. Said he doubts it would ever even matter, citing MAD doctrine. Then we started talking about BBQ. Heh.

My neighbor is a cop and when I asked about concealed carry, he was encouraging about it. He even loaned me his personal Glock 27 to shoot, and now that he's bought a Glock 22 to replace his service Beretta 96, he is insisting I take the Beretta out to shoot the next time I go.

Anyone personally know a pro gun cop?
Interesting that I just stumbled across this thread. I just had a conversation with a police chief on May 31st. He is the police chief of a town with a population of about 25,000 people. He had stopped by my father's home to get a lawn mower repaired. My father has had a small engine repair shop for the past 35 years. This individual has been a customer for years. In fact the lawn mower he brought over to have repaired was a Snapper I used to own 15 years ago (it now needs a new engine and he wants to fix it rather than replace it). I asked him point blank how he felt about gun control and then threw in the question who do we vote for. He was very pro gun and said he really supported concealed carry. Like most of us, he knows that guns in the hands of good citizens are a great help to police. I talked with him at length about various guns, the .40 vs. 9 mm debate, him wishing he were a better marksman etc. I've always liked this guy but liked him even more after our discussion. He acknowledged it was going to be a tough election for gun lovers.

Maybe the question should be:

Would a 'pro gun' policeman (Or PRO GUN military person.) take firearms away from anyone if they were told to be CONFISCATED under an ORDER from their higher authority figure or boss or under any new Elected Official on a city, township, county, state or FEDERAL LEVEL?

I think that I am going to throw up now. I saw some presidential politics on my internet computer live.

We are sooooo screwed!

Military = military.

NON military = civilians and that INCLUDES the police.

Catherine
PS: I already posted on this thread but I felt that this was a valid point.

Unquestionably, yes. The vast majority would. Even the nicest of them. :(
