I own more DA, largely because I have been accumulating them since the mid-1980s, they fill more roles, and I work for a chief who will not let me qual with SA revolvers, and considers off-the-clock defensive encounters to be line-of-duty, to be handled with approved equipment. My first SA sixguns date from 1997 or 1998, and have been acquired because I like them, not based on need.
Now that I have plenty of DA revolvers, it is possible that SA sixguns will eventually overtake DA in total numbers. My short list for DA revolvers has a mere two or three on it, with only one beng a priority, whereas I dream of quite a few future SA sixguns.
Another factor favoring more SA acquisitions is that I am more of a lefty with SA shooting, and more of a right-hander with DA. My right shoulder, elbow, and wrist are afflicted with chronic injuries, so much of my future shooting is
going to be left-handed, compared to the past.
It is quite difficult to say which ONE type I prefer! I cannot see myself living without my small DA revolvers for concealed carry and "back-up" carry, and would hate to be without the big SA sixguns for recreational shooting, and possibly for some future SD/HD/carry after I retire.
That would almost be like trying to say whether I preferred revolver or auto; I started hand-gunning with a 1911, but had to start policin' with a sixgun, and soon grew to love them, too.
