I personally prefer buckshot. If the only way to instantly stop a BG is to hit the CNS, you have a better chance to hit the spine with the 9 - 18 pellets that come in a round of 00 than with a single slug. That said, I keep a stock of slugs too. :)

What is your "go to" shotgun round for home defense?

Both.

Ok, that was just for Texas Bulldog.

It Is true though, my HD shotgun has both slug and buck loaded upon it. Buck in the magazine and slug on the carrier for special situations. At household ranges I don't really see a need for slug though, my Federal LE132-00 holds a +/-6 inch pattern at 25 yards and my house is only 60 feed in the longest sight-line.

If you can find some Federal LE133-00PR then you can have some buckshot that remains in the shotcup until it strikes a hard target, perhaps the best of both worlds.

I use buckshot (9-pellet, low recoil, Federal 00 with Flitecontrol wad) since a slug is likely going to penetrate too much.

Let's just please not go into the birdshot vs. buckshot debate...

You need to put both.

We are slugs, wife and I.

But after much thought we have some buck on hand in the heavy few pellets.. make that cannon shot in a can.

I have buckshot in the chamber, and mag tube. On the stock i have 2 more buck and 3 slugs.

Tactical shotgun loads typically offer much less spread (buckshot) and less recoil for better control.

I keep my shotgun "cruiser ready" w/ 5 tactical buck in the tube and 6 slugs in the saddle. This leaves room to select load slugs if need be. Personally I feel for home defense use the buck should be number 1. Once you get past inside home ranges there is little buck can do that a slug couldn't do better IMHO.

I use slugs, to me its a more accurate load. I dont have other people in any of the others rooms in my house so Im not worried about overpenetration. My exterior walls are also made of cinder blocks, so again, Im not too worried about over penetration. Thats not to say a slug wont make it through them, I just really dont think they would be super effective once they did.

I've seen the term "Law Enforcement" more than "tactical" but the idea is common...low velocity (1150ish FPS) "reduced recoil" buckshot. I am not a fan. I did some informal testing and the stuff bounces where it should puncture. OTOH I use it in my HD (apartment) shotgun ... but only with slugs as backup.

Slugs are my first choice unless overpenetration is the primary concern.

So I guess that's "both".

"Tactical Buckshot"

I have eight rounds of non-tactical Federal 00 Buckshot designed to kill deer in my magazine tube, and six rounds of non-tactical slugs designed to kill deer on my buttstock.

Federal LE-127 00 in the magazines- full velocity 9 pellet loads, with Brenneke KO slugs in the Sidesaddles- full velocity 1 ounce slugs. The slugs are to turn what is cover from buckshot into concealment, and to allow easier reach if engagement ranges open up beyond 25 yards. Since we live in the country, it's a possibility.

This will go against the grain a little but mine is chamber empty tube full. First round racked in is a slug in case I need a little more control or to put a round thru something robust like the the refrigerator. The rest are 00.
If good guys can get body armor so can bad guys and I think a slug may tip the scales in my favor.

Federal Vital-Shok 12GA 9 pellet 00 Buckshot @ 1300fps

If I had a Saiga 12 I would load up 20 of them in a drum :D

Yes I use slugs. I'm in a rural area and my shotgun is used more often for varmint control which has at times included large animals. So there's a #4 buck up first for smaller critters followed by a magazine full of Brenneke slugs.

3" 12ga 15 pellet 00 buckshot in the tube and on the butt cuff. Slugs and 5 shot (turkey load) on the shelf above.

Nothing new here, Federal 00 Buckshot in the tube with Brenneke KO slugs as my backup.

Brenneke Short Field Magnums for both gauges in slugs with a little Remington tossed into the mix. Whatever cover the BG tries to take, wont matter.
