Does This Gun Exist?

I'm pretty much decided on the Taurus 85, steel rather than ultralight for more manageable recoil, stainless finish because I'm at the time of life when I experience personal summers at unpredictable intervals so I know it will get sweaty, and the exposed hammer so that I can shoot single action -- though I'll practice double action so I can do it if I need to.

Now that's funny. Cleverly put. :D

I think that the Geezer Squad is probably smiling and thnking, "just you wait, kids; you'll be with us before you realize it."

since it was wadcutter bullets, it may have been a low-power, target loading).

That is precisely what they are. Pussycat loads. I can hardly feel the recoil (in my mid sized S&W Model 19).

I'm pretty much decided on the Taurus 85

Taurus has a bewildering variety of products.

My copy of the Taurus catalog (2006) is showing the 85 as +P capable, which means you're good for any .38 loading. My preferred load (3.7 gr Bullseye, 158gr lswc) is slightly into the +P range.

the exposed hammer so that I can shoot single action

Double action is how you'll want to be doing almost all of your defensive shooting practice. Not sure how DA pull is going to be on a Taurus.

Taurus does have a shrouded hammer model, the 851. Same size as the 85, can be manually cocked, but the hammer does not protrude to any great extent, making it unlikely to snag on clothing.

I'll be interested to hear how this works. I'm contemplating getting a .38 snub if my dealer takes too much longer finding an available LCP.

In dry-firing the DA pull for the Taurus 85 was considerably lighter and smoother than the DA pull on the LadySmith I was comparing it to. The Ruger that I rented was about halfway in between.

I don't especially like revolvers. I strongly dislike firing revolvers double-action. But there's 5 pages here and more on other threads about why I've decided this is the best option for my carry gun.

I'll practice with it double-action enough to know I can do it, but if I have the extra split-second I'll cock it and fire SA.

To 3Killer'Bs Hell , my name is ziggy i am a gunsmith and have a large gunshop and range, my wifle and employees carry many firearms the most popular for the last 10 years has been KAHR ARMS myself and my wife and four employees like the pm 9, and the p9mm it is very comfortable and lite and can be worn exactly like you described.ifr you would like to talk to me about that, [email protected]

@Ziggy,

Thank you for the suggestion. I've handled various Kahrs and find that they do not fit my hand well. I have too much difficulty reaching the controls to be comfortable with them.

If you can find one, try a J-frame or a Taurus 85 w/ a 3 inch barrel. Controls recoil better than the 2" ,better ballance overall. I put the "Wolff" spring kit in mine the double action pull was lighter than I like in a defense gun so I replaced the factory main spring & left the Wolff trigger return spring. It now has what I believe to be a perfect DA trigger pull. The SA release is light & crisp & hardly ever used.
