Dumbest thing heard at the range this weekend

I am wondering what is the dumbest thing you overheard at the range this weekend. Just curious if there are as many morons at other ranges, or if they all seem to congregate around me.

Typically I shoot at American Shooting Centers here in Houston. At the 200 yard line, they have concrete benchrest benches. They regurarly hold benchrest matches, so they are good quality.

Anyway, I hear this guy several benches down commenting to his buddy that he just cant get his 300 Win Mag to group in its usual .25 MOA as the "damn bench is not level." He is getting 3" groups and this "never happens." He keeps on swearing that he shoots .25" MOA, with his bone stock Win rifle and factory ammo, all day long, so it must be the bench, as he does not typically shoot at this range.

I find it funny that so many people claim to have".25" MOA factory stock rifles.

I wanted to ask if the guy even knew what MOA was... But, I bit my tounge and just keep on shooting my .25" MOA rifle...

Lots of shooters don't know what they are doing !! However a well made gun should get 1" 100yd groups and in fact the Tikka guarentees 1" groups ! Certain cartridges are inherently more accurate such as the .222 or 6.5x55 or even powerfull rounds like the 338 Lapua and you might expect 1/2 MOA from those and in a target version perhaps 1/4 MOA. ...But you should have asked him what MOA meant, last night I had to explain that it wasn't Moment of Angle !

well since I have said a bunch of them, I feel that I can contribute something to this thread...

Please bear in mind that I have a twisted sense of humor, and that becuase I can goto the range early in the day, I do not frequently run into any of my fellow members...

Hmm. Well, when I was at a competition yesterday I was shooting with a gaggle of people who are all better than I am. Generally in such a situation I just try to shut up and listen. (Yes, it's amazing, I know. )

Heck, it just wasn't a quarter minute of angle bench: that's all.

I've been having a lot of problems with the floor at the range where I shoot bullseye two evenings a week: it's just not an accurate floor.

When I'm at the range I just keep my mouth shut. Better to let ten guys think I'm dumb than to speak and remove all doubt. I usually can't add any substantive comment, anyway.

Got to love these guys. I have a 300 win mag and I can tell you if I print just under MOA at 100 yards I'm thrilled. Heck .75 moa at 200 yards I'm tickled pink. BTW that is with a Blaser LRS2 that has shot 2.25 inch groups at 700 yards with Federal 190 Match. What most of these guys don't understand is something called YAW. Forget any accuracy until the bullet settles down. The best accuracy at shorter ranges I have seen with this gun with factory ammo was 155's and that was 1 inch groups at 200 yards.

The funniest thing I ever heard on a range was the statement that .30 armor piercing bullets were issued in combat but that the plain (ball) bullets were for training. The plain bullets were so weak they could just put a hole in the paper and then they fell to the ground.

And the "expert" who put out this advice was an Army rifle instructor!

Needless to say, I did not dare laugh.

The best brag I have heard was the guy who had a Mini 14 that would shoot .5" groups at 300 yds. And this was from a very over weight mall security guard. We always asked if he would shoot for guns. But there was always some reason he couldn't do it that day.

Dumbest thing I have seen.... Guy 2 lanes over with a FTE that has locked the slide out of battery... has the firearm muzzle pointing at himself while he is banging it on the floor. I left and mentioned to the range clerk to call 911, then explained why.....

It wasn't at the range, but a guy came into a gun store while I was shopping. He had a 7mm Rem mag (IIRC) or some such as that. He began explaining that he wanted a more powerful caliber because the 7 wasn't accurate to 300 yards which was his average shot. So he wanted a 300 mag (or some such).

Then he began to explain that he sighted his rifle in at 100 yards in ideal conditions at a perfectly level gun range. Yet his shots were in wilderness conditions, either up or down a mountain, after having exerted himself to get there.

I suggested that maybe he would want to practice shooting in the conditions of the hunt. That maybe it's not the gun. Maybe it's the shooter.

He was adamant. It was the gun.

I took a 2 day carbine course last weekend. I was worried about what I might hear and see from a dozen strangers with carbines and pistols. Wow, was I ever pleasantly surprised. In two days of training in shooting on the move, shooting from unusual positions, rapid carbine / pistol transitions, etc. I didn't see a SINGLE safety violation. No one was a know-it-all, everyone was friendly and easy going, just a great group overall. Lots of solud, realistic knowledge shared by lots of good people. Not a single blow hard.

Our instructor, Sully from The Defensive Edge, deserves most of the credit for such a smooth weekend, but it was just a great group overall. I was sure we'd have at least one Captain Tactical trying to tell us how he 'did it back in the teams'. Instead, everyone was there to learn and share.

Oh, .458 socom off an AR platform rocks.

I shoot benchrest. REAL benchrest, with REAL rifles which are capable of, in perfect conditions, with perfect loads, with perfect shooters, of grouping in 0.1 MOA.

Note the use of the word "perfect."

If someone has a rifle that'll shoot 0.25 MOA "all day long," they really need to take it to the Supershoot, where they'll whoop major butt on about 359 other benchrest shooters from around the world.

Of course, if you can't make it to the Supershoot, I'll be happy to shoot with you. Bring money.

Oh, and for what it's worth... A bench that moves, jiggles, or which isn't level _can_ affect grouping.

About a year or so back I was bragging to a friend about how accurate my rifle is (avg .75-.85 @100 yds) and offered to let him shoot it. He promptly printed two sub- .6 groups.

Do you know how embarrassing it is to be outshot with your own gun!?

Hey, at least I know it's not the gun's fault when I miss.

Not at a range, but...

I know a certain old guy who may or may not have fathered me and my brother.
At one point, he needed to get a rope up into a tree. His plan was to tie a smaller line on to an arrow and shoot it up where he wanted the rope, then use the smaller line to pull the rope up.
But instead of using the perfectly functional bow that we have, he pulled the shot from a 12GA shell and used it to launch the arrow.
