.22 PLINKER: Shooting a lot of inexpensive .22 rounds is a great way to improve your rifle shooting. Plinking off cans with a rifle is a fun shooting tradition. So this month’s target is a picture of soda can. (Please don't mail or e-mail me actual cans).

20 shots standing, shooting offhand with no support at 50 yards. Each hit in the soda can counts as 1 for a possible of 20. A small X ring in the center of the can will be used as a tiebreaker.

Download February's target here

Thanks to Bedlamite for the great February Match idea and for hosting the Mail in Match website!

Shoot safely and Good Luck!

P.S. If you don't have access to a rifle, go ahead and use a pistol for this. Use the same classifications:

Standard = regular barrel up to 6"
Improved = barrel over 6", bull barrel or other significant improvements
Scoped = scoped
Open = any other pistol

Good luck at 50 yards! Pistol scores will likely get honorary mention.

Or -- get yourself a .22 rifle -- what a great excuse to get a new sub- $200 gun that shoots dirt cheap ammo accurately!

A few questions ROTR:

What category would an improved rifle with a scope be in? Would you use the highest category that fits, i.e., scoped?

Can we enter more than once? That is, can we use different rifles in different categories? Shooting only one target in each, of course. Or is it limited to one target per shooter no matter what?

I didn’t get a chance to participate in the last mail in match, but it looks like I will be able to this month. I’m looking forward to it. Great idea.

I know I’m not running any of this but if I could toss in my two centavos, I think it’d be great if we had the option of competing in various classes.

HELP!!

I can't print the complete page.
Whenever I try to print this month's target, the print out lacks the lower 30-40% of the can. Everything else is complete.
I thought it was related to trying to print a "letter"-sized file on an A4-sized paper, but the problem remains, even when I specify the paper as letter-sized.

To encourage ownership and mastery of multiple firearms, go ahead and enter in 1-4 classes. I may change this if it appears that it's being abused.

Cool...my favorite kind of shooting! I'll be sending in 2 classes. Maybe I'm simple, but what would you consider to be abuse of the system. I didn't understand the comment, Readyontheright.

Stock is only for carbines? How many unmodified 22s only have 20" barrels?

All mine came with about 23-26" barrels unmodified (Marlin 39a, Romanian 1969 Trainer, Polish Mosin Trainer).

Is the use of a sling allowed?

50yds, no support, open sights below zero weather..... Might have to blow target up a little.
If sling allowed I may have to mount one. That can really make a difference.
I am one who always grabs a branch/bush/anything to shoot rifle.

DeputyVaughn The can didn't show up for me until I scrolled down. I don't know why. Also I had to download the latest version before I could print some other stuff. Maybe check if you have version 5 or above.
Please note this is a area I know LITTLE about. Just that I didn't see can until I printed. Good luck.

DeputyVaughn- Sometimes The Adobe Plugin has problems dealing with larger files, I'm not sure why. Save it to your hard drive first; right click on the target link, then 'Save target as'

I don't think a sling would be a problem, but that's ROTR's call.

MAL H- anything with a scope is in the scope class.

DMK- Lots.
There are exceptions, but generally semi-autos and lever actions from Remington, Ruger, Marlin, etc. have barrels that are 20" or shorter. A few of Winchester's Lever actions and almost all bolt actions have barrels that are 22" or longer.

Is is wrong to assume that bolt guns with a longer sight radius are going to be more accurate than your off the shelf 10/22 or Rem 597?

Checking back through all the different Manufacturer's websites, maybe the cutoff should have been 21"

Generally not. But if you're trying to weed out semis from the bolt actions wouldn't it make more sense just make semi and bolt action catagories. I just don't see how a box stock Marlin 39A or 25N is fair competition to a 10/22 and $500 on the Brownell's account.

Anyway, I'm not complaining. It's not a big deal in any way. The point of this is just to get out and have some fun. Anything that gives me an excuse to pick a gun out of the safe and shoot it is cool with me. :)

BTW: Cool Target! :D

Downloaded target. Still opening as a dot and text. Tomorrow I'll try upgrading my Adobe. Maybe my version is too old.

Any other suggestions welcome.

"Go to the link ROTR supplied in his opening post (Download February's ...) and you will find January's target right above February's."

I'm looking for a thread on the January match. I have the target -- submutted it already.

Looking to hear the results and comments on the targets received.

Thirties- You can still get January's target here
Results aren't posted yet, I'll put them up as soon as I get them.

It wouldn't be fair competition, but then I've never seen a 10/22+$500 in parts upgrades that still has ironsights.

I don't have all the answers, I was just trying to come up with some way to make it fit into ROTR's class setup and still have some close competition. :)

I'f you'll excuse me, I'm going to go practice by shooting the can that I scanned for the target. :D

Pappy John -- You're not simple, I'm just being too anal. The more shooting the better!

It looks like everyone needs Adobe Acrobat 5.0 to download the targets, so go here to get it for free.

As far as all the questions go, just try to keep it fair. 20" seemed like an OK cutoff to differentiate between the plinker carbines and the target .22s.

Get out and shoot!

January .357/.38 wheelgun results are in and will be posted in January's thread.
