I'd pay back whatever the guy asked, unless it was in the $100 range, and keep things peaceful. Above $100 I'd maybe get together with him eyeball to eyeball to go over the situation and see if a compromise can be worked out.
A 500 acre tract good for shooting is a valuable thing to have access to, at least hereabouts, and I'd definitely try to keep the whole thing on a friendly basis. The "drunk" guy may have a couple of impediments --I know a guy who constantly sounds drunk because of a speech impediment, but is sober as a judge. (I also know drunks whose speech is crisp and clear until they fall down.)
Maybe mentioning the "boogerhook on the bang switch" to the other guys will result in peer pressure for him to watch that little habit --and I'd watch myself around him.
The older I get the more I value friends, and I recently lost one due to a (non-gun) misunderstanding --and he won't even talk to me about it, so I let it go, but I'm not happy about it.
Keep your sense of humor about it, whatever you do.
