You can get the Sigmas by S&W for dirt cheap, but there are reasons for that. Ever pulled the trigger on one of those things? It's like pulling the trigger on my Kel-Tec P32... very odd. However, I've seen them for as low as $299 and if you can get past the terrible trigger, they are probably mostly solid options!

Ruger SR series. My LGS has them that come out to right at $400 OTD.

My buddy just bought the SR9c and it is a solid gun for the $400. Good trigger, handles recoil well, looks good (stainless slide), and comes with 2 mags (one compact and one full size with grip adapter).

Another vote on the S&W 3rd gen. I have purchased 2 for under $250 over the last few years. Amazingly reliable, accurate, and durable guns.

I'd check out a Smith & Wesson SD 9 or 40. My brother bought the .40 new at a gun show for around $370 and it's a very nice pistol, especially for that price.

The Ruger P-95's are selling for $279 here in blue, $319 in stainless. That is what I'd buy.

My vote goes to the Ruger SR-9. However, I too want to know what a "great homer" is as well. Oh, and by the way, Glocks are great.

Needing a good hi cap pistol 9mm .40 or .45 on a strict budget ....suggestions.....please no "glocks are great homers .....I know there great......thanks.
There really should be a FAQ on these questions. Lots of knowledge out there that would be useful to all. Anyway -
NEW -
- Ruger P-Series
- S&W Sigma
- S&W SD
- Ruger SR series (pushing $400 though)

USED -
- S&W 3rd gen 59xx series <<---would be my first choice but I'm a dinosaur! Spend the extra $100 on ammo & accessories
- Taurus <gasp!> PT92 - or a real Beretta if you're lucky
- Glock

Local dealer has a like new one in the upper $300 range. Haven't been to his shop for a week, but it was there at last visit.
