I cannot imagine any gun sold brand new for under 400 dollars being anywhere near as good as my cz. I trust and can shoot my cz as good as my other modern guns that cost over a grand. I have shot it thousands of times with cheap surplus ammo with no problems. I think you would love one.

I'd put the Taurus poly-pistols over the Sigma Series to be honest. Seem to have more consistent triggers imho, and better safety features if that's a selling point to you, not to mention lifetime warranty, and great customer service (mind you this is all coming from a "Glock guy")... Also check around for Beretta 96-G's that are refurbed or LE Trades... Prices sit lower since it's a de-cocker only (not safety) gun, but if you like Beretta's I've seen them recently at Cabela's for south of $400...

The $400 NIB 9mm Round Up
That is a thread I started when I had the same general question.

I ended up spending $483 on a CZ P-07. However, on that list I would definitely buy a Stoeger Cougar, Bersa UC9, or Sig Sauer 2022.

The Sig is a little bigger than my P-07. So, you would probably want to check it out before buying it. A lot of people think it is too big for concealed carry.

The Bersa has a good length and height for concealed carry. With the safety levers it is a bit wider though. Again check it out before buying.

The Stoeger Cougar Compact is also a great gun. I have seen them for $379 locally. I prefer larger "compact" guns though. So, you will want to make sure it isn't too big for you.

I also like the size and feel of the firts generation Taurus 24/7 Pro compact. I have heard Taurus is discontinuing them since the G2 compact is ready for introduction. The G1 compact was $370. You might be able to find a good deal on one as dealers close them out to make room for G2s.

97-03, thank you for your service. If you like the idea of the 5906, but want less weight, look at the aluminum frame 3rd Gen S&Ws - like this 4043 - http://www.summitgunbroker.com/4043.html. I've not done business with him, but he has a good reputation.

Here's a quick guide on S&W third gen guns (these are general numbers, but there's always an exception) :
39xx, 59xx - 9mm full size; 69xx - 9mm compact; 40xx - 40 S&W; 45xx - 45 ACP

xxx6 - steel frame, xxx3 & xxx4 - aluminum frame

xx0x, xx6x -DA/SA; xx1x, xx3x - DA/SA compact frame; xx5x, xx8x - DAO; xx4x may be DAO or DA/SA xx2x, xx7x - DA/SA with frame mounted decocker

The Bersas are good pistols. They're made in Argentina, so spare parts can be hard to find. Spare mags are a bit pricey, and not as common as the S&W, Ruger, Glock, SIG, etc. mags.

I hear good things about some of the clones like the ATI 92 and the EAA witness, might not be as good as the originals but both would get you a new gun under 400 bucks.

Bersa Thunder pistols that I've handled (not shot) seemed like quality guns visually. That is, until you actually picked them up and played with them. All felt cheaply made. One had the safety lever fall off as I was racking the slide.

I like the stoeger cougar for a new under 400 gun.

Also the 2022 is a good one too.

Used glocks can be found for 379-399 all day.

I'd agree on the Sigma. Think a lot of the belly-aching about the trigger is piling on. My brother has a 40 and I enjoy shooting it very much.

A good used, Beretta 92FS is an excellent option, too. People seem to like their Bersa's fine, too.

Since "carry gun" is on the table, then my suggestions would include the Sig 2022 (NOT a P250,) or the 6906. $400 and you should be able to find a used gen2/3 Glock 19 if you look long enough. After my personal experience with a steel, 10mm Witness I can't recommend EAA in any way/shape/form. Tanfoglio? Sure... EAA for any kind of support? No way.

The 2022 is roughly the same size as my 228 and I IWB conceal it routinely. Really not hard at all in a good holster and a real belt.
