Down in the good ol South.
Awile ago I made a thread on which to get. Kel-Tec SU-22 or a Ruger 10/22. The Kel-Tec looked cool but the 10/22 is known to be more reliable. So I got the 10/22 because of it's legendary reliability, it was cheaper, and you can still add stuff on it to make it look kind of tacticool as well.

So far the ten round mags work perfectly, no jams of any kind, however the BX-22 mags tend to jam on me. I'm wondering if it's either;
A: Because they need to be broken in?
B: Because they sort of have a wiggle to them?
C: They just don't like the ammo? I was using winchester hollow point bulk pack and Browning bulk pack regular lead round nose. Also tried some Winchester M22, and Federal Champion, and Remington thunderbolt. All work great in my Ruger MKIII.

Idk, but I'm somewhat disappointed in that.

Also I saw on youtube that they seem to be able to cycle sub sonics. Mine will not no matter what magazine I used. I used CCI quiet ammo, and no luck, I either have to manually cycle them or sometimes they'll just stovepipe or something. Maybe the rifle needs broken in too? I've fired a few hundred rounds in two range trips so far. So not that much use. Maybe the newer 10/22s are more finicky? I got it at Academy for a tad over $200 dollars. Mags, guns, everything brand new. I cleaned it after the first range trip to see if it made a difference, it did not.

So since I'm new to owning a 10/22 anyone have any tips or tricks they might like to share?

I'll post a picture, I'm satisfied with the looks, and so far with the ten rounder mags. It's super enjoyable to shoot though so overall I'm still satisfied, just not as much as I thought.

Also if anyone knows where to get a Ram-Line Ventilated Black Handguard for the 10/22 let me know. I've looked everywhere and can't find any. I got another handguard but it doesn't stay on very well.

The rifle was designed and built to fire a specific family of .22 LR ammunition. Rather than U-Tube I suggest you read the manual written by the people who made the rifle. I would place more confidence in what they have to say than what I see online and that includes U-Tube.

The RUGER® 10/22® CARBINE and 10/22® Rifles are chambered for,
and designed to properly function with, only the 22 caliber Long Rifle rimfire
cartridge, standard, high velocity, or hyper-velocity, manufactured to U.S.
industry standards.
Do not use 22 short, 22 long, 22 shot, or 22 cartridges loaded with blunt-nosed,
sharp-shouldered, or “explosive” bullets. They will not function reliably and may
jam the mechanism or discharge before being fully chambered. Use only
ammunition that functions correctly in your rifle. See “Warning – Malfunctions,”

If the standard magazines work fine and the BX22 magazines jam with the prescribed ammunition I would assume it is the magazine, either form or fit but the magazine is likely at fault. I would return them. However, your call on that note.

The Ruger 10/22 is a great little rifle, congratulations on getting one and enjoy it.

I too bought a 10/22 a few years ago as a plinking gun for use in between barrel cool-downs. It has been so much fun to shoot. I don't bother with finding match grade ammo and just buy the cheap stuff. Still it has performed without a flaw and been a great addition to the line-up. Glad to hear you are enjoying it as well. There are some tune up tips that can be found on YouTube. I don't have the specific links.

Yeah I've never used match grade anything. Do you use the BX-25 mags? And have you shot sub sonics reliability from yours?

I'll try tinkering around with the BX-25s. The 10 round mags don't wobble but the 25 rounders do. I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. There is a video on how to help make them more sturdy.

Go to rimfirecentral.com, lots of 10/22 gurus there. Theres a trick to fix bx25 wobble; if you open it up and put a .22 short casing in the red follower.

X3 on going to rimfirecentral.com.

My 10 22 shoots any .22 I have ran in it. But I have done lots to the action. Headspace bolt, chamfer bolt, polish all surfaces that contact anything on the bolt, polish the operating rod. Also keep chamber clean, I clean around 1K round count.

Chamfering the bolt will go a long way to help cycling. It moves the initial contact with the hammer up, giving the bolt more leverage.

Welcome to the AR of .22's.

Stock Pouch

In my opinion, the 10/22 is a essential in everyone's collection. I've taught all my daughters to shoot using mine and everyone who uses it loves it. I always enjoy shooting it. I have had mine for 10 years and can think of only one time I had a problem. A casing split and would not eject. I've never had an issue with Ruger magazines. After market ones always seem to be the problem.

What brand is the pouch on the stock? Does it hold 2 of the 10 round magazines easily?

IMHO, every shooter needs a .22LR rifle as one of those "basic staples" of shooting, and the 10/22 is an excellent one to have. It's one of the ones I've called a "standard issue" rifle, because it seemed like every boy I knew growing up was "issued" a .22 rifle at some point.

45223, you've got a good-looking rifle there. Shoot it in good health!

You made the better choice. BTW, as far as looking cool, your 10/22 does; also, the 10/22 is the "Lego gun" of .22's. There are more ways to modify one and/or build one from the ground up than any other .22-from drop-in improvements (I recommend the auto bolt release-it beats fiddling with the one installed at the factory) to full-blown "Make your 10/22 look like a {insert gun model here} " kits. You can make an M1 carbine out of it, or a Thompson, or a SAW, you can make it a bullpup, etc.

But it's just fine as is also.:)

45223;

Your accuracy may improve, yeah I know that wasn't a stated issue but nonetheless, if all of those doo-dads wrapping the barrel & forestock were removed. There's something that looks velcro'd on the forestock, the normal barrel band, something else, and then an accessory sling mount? Are you sure it's all needed?

I'm going to guess it's not all needed, but a lot of people mod their 10/22's with fun stuff, for fun.

Congrats on the new 10/22!

I've never had mine cycle subsonics, not sure where you saw that it would. They just don't have enough pop to cycle the action. However, a quick flick of the action loads another...unless it stovepipes.

The BX-22 that I have has jammed occasionally. Honestly, for reliability, the 10 rounders are the way to rock. Almost every 20-30 round capacity mag I've had for the 10/22 jams eventually, or brand new. Not the 10 rounders, though. The clear 10 round mags tend to stick in my rifle, though...weirdly enough. The black work perfectly and drop free.

*if* you get a lot of stovepipes or reliability issues with regular ammo (not subsonics), a little advice, buy a better/new extractor. The bolt on 10/22's are super easy to take apart and replace parts in. I kid you not, I replaced one on a friend's 10/22 and it was night and day with reliability. He was frustrated with a new 10/22 until I got the part and swapped it for him.

I think Ruger's extractors are milled a little "off" sometimes, especially at the very corner which is too rounded, and the angle and edge make all the difference in a good ejection, or a stovepipe or double feed/misfeed.

Here's the one I got:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/363360/volquartsen-exact-edge-extractor-ruger-10-22-10-22-magnum-mark-ii-mark-iii-22-45

Shoot it for a while and see if all goes well. If not, grab yourself some new little parts and start enjoying how easy it is to work on a 10/22!

I might have one of those Ramline polymer handguards around somewhere. If I find it, I'll let you know.

Subsonics will cycle with a silencer on the end, which is what they are made for in the first place.

Nice looking 10/22! I bought mine nearly 40 years ago and have pretty much left it stock though I do have a Butler Creek folding stock for those times when I went it to be a little more compact for transport. I also added an old Weaver scope once i saw what this rifle could do with just the iron sights. Accuracy is outstanding with Wolf match target and CCI MiniMags the preferred ammo of choice. Never have had a problem with the 10 round mags and have yet to find a higher capacity magazine that worked right from start to finish. My 10/22 is incredibly reliable and amazingly accurate.

As a general rule if you hold the magazine, have the magazine touching the ground, or let a sling put pressure on the magazine it may cause feed issues.

Welcome to the world of 10/22, 45223. I have had mine for 30 odd years now. I myself have never tried the larger capacity magazines. I did discover very early on that the revolver speed loader pouches work great for spare magazines while in the field.

P.S. cool looking Rig

Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely look at that website and I'll try some bolt modifications. maybe get a shiny mirror like finish for it. This is my first gun that I'll be making lots of mods to lol.

My 10/22 is 30 about years old, I installed the BX trigger group and I really like it :D I have the 25 rnd BX mags and those have been very reliable.

The CCI Quiet ammo will not work the action on any auto loading .22, it is actually specialized ultra-quiet ammo and has a far smaller charge of gunpowder in it (.6 grains, IIRC, typical .22 powder loads are a hair over 1 grain, depending on the velocity they produce

If you went with CCI Subsonic, Green Tag, or Standard velocity, those would work the action while still remaining subsonic

Quiet is mainly designed for backyard plinking without disturbing the neighbors

Bought my 10/22 used at a gun show in about '98. From the looks of it, I figured it was about 10 years old at the time, but never thought much about it. Good gun.

I recently looked up the serial number and discovered it was made in '74. So it's about 42 years old. "She wears her age well."

Of course, 42 isn't nearly as old as it used to be!

I know this has been mentioned, but the best and first upgrade for any 10/22 imo is a new extractor. Everyone that I've had has had issues with stove pipes until I changed out the extractor for either a VQ or a KIDD. They are cheap (under $15), and make a huge difference in reliability. They also take about 3-4 minutes to install with very little work.
