Gun dealers gone bad

Good Gun Store Experience

I was buying my first rifle at 18 in my local gun shop and was looking at a Weatherby Mark V in .270. The fellow behind the counter actually pulled out his ballistics table to try and talk me into a different caliber (30-06). I had already done my research and decided I liked the versatile .270 more. Ended up with a Sako M85 instead of the Weatherby, but short story long, if a sales clerk shows you the facts, but still lets you decide for yourself you are in the right place.

I wanted a scope changed and bore sighted. Dropped off the rifle and was told to stop by the next week to pick it up. I went as instructed and got my rifle, shouldered it at a trophy on the far wall and the horizontal cross hair was canted a few degrees off? Asked the counter guy what's up with that. He goes to get the gun plumber that did the switch and the Smithy says he doesn't like swapping scope without the customer being there, okay. Can you correct the scope and recheck the sight in? And I ask why would someone want the horizon canted?

You do know that will vary depending on the build of the individual and how they mount the gun, right? The eye relief will vary too.

In other words, the answer he gave you is perfectly legitimate and not incorrect.

Walked into LGS with intent to purchase. One guy behind counter talking to two guys sitting on stools at the counter. You know the type.I looked around a bit, saw a couple pieces I wanted to look at. I kept looking at the handguns, then looking at the guy behind the counter. He couldn't be bothered to even acknowledge I was in his store. After a few minutes of obviously looking interested in something, I walked out. I guess business must be real good for some guys to let a few hundred dollars walk out the door.

At this point the only time I go into a gun store is to pick up powder and primers. Everything else is shipped via MidwayUSA or Brownell's. In the rare occasion I'm buying a gun that isn't C&R eligible or a FTF deal in my state, I call up a kitchen table FFL.

I wanted to support my LGS's and tried to for a long time. But after a while I just got way too tired of all the BS and attempted ripoffs.

Same goes for gunshows. The few I attend are primarily for entertainment value to gawk at some of the other attendees.

It's gun dealers like this guy that I don't care for:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIlhiCQQ5Xg

Some of his videos are decent, and provide some good info but he has this arrogant, know-it-all attitude that I can't get with and he does disseminate some bad information from time to time, as well as passing off some of his more "interesting" opinions as "the only right way" and such.

I decided to stop in at a LGS that I have not visited in a long time and see what they would charge to do a transfer for me. I had the ad from the wholesaler with me with whom I have a account set-up (for my C&R). The LGS told me they wanted $100.00 for the transfer. I thanked the clerk for reminding me why I didn't stop in at their overpriced store very often and left.

Oh, I stopped by another LGS closer to home and he only charges $25.00 for the transfer and was very friendly about doing it.
