I don't know about you, but as a guy who has shot guns since I was a kid I am get angry at the lazy attitude that some people have towards carrying and shooting guns. I was taught by a very disciplined father and so maybe I have a sharper view of this subject than is needed, but i believe every gun owner owes it to themselves, their family and society in general to practice gun safety ALL the time, to teach gun safety to EVERYONE and to be aware of how they present themselves to the public ALL the time, EVERYWHERE they go.

Some pet peaves I have:

1. NOT treating every gun as if it is loaded. I see people at the range, in their homes, at gun shows pointing guns towards other people, waving them around as they talk etc. Unless the chamber is open and unloaded you should never point a weapon any where other than at the ground or at a properly back-stopped target.
2. Bragging about guns and their exploits with guns in public - now this one can be interpreted wrong, but what I mean is, if you are at a restaurant, bar, shopping mall, work etc and strangers or non-gun owners are walking by you, you shouldn't be bragging about how you were unloading full clips from your AR at deer or anything else that could construed as unsafe by the un-initiated. Those people may vote against your gun and hunting rights in the near future.
3. Deer hunters who act as if they are entitled to shoot as many deer as possible, on anyone's land whether they have permission or not.
4. Hunters who shoot at anything that moves. If you don't know 100% that you are shooting at a real deer, you've got no business pulling the trigger.
5. Hunters that go into town with a) a deer hanging off the tailgate for all to see b) go into a store/restaurant with blood on their clothes c) go into a store bragging about the five deer they shot this morning. Many people do not understand the difference between good, safe respectable hunters and the un-safe ones if they are around town bragging about it openly.

Even though it is our constitutional RKBA, we have to constantly show the rest of the population that we are law abiding citizens who can be trusted to use guns safely and respectably. The minute we stop showing them that we are a good group of people, there are a ton of liberals ready to take the RKBA away from us. Public opinion is the key to all of it.

Anyone else have pet peaves they could pass along to us?

I don't hunt, and I always treat guns as if they're loaded. At my house, they usually are.

But for Point #2, I'll say whatever I please. I've done nothing illegal, and I've got nothing to be ashamed of. I engage in a hobby that is 100% legal, and I exercise my rights. If anyone is offended that's their problem, not mine.

When a guy gets his first gun(s) and 6 months later is talking like a salty old Delta Force veteran.

Wow you got a thing against Hunters. You would not like it here in Montana during hunting season. Ever truck you see may have a dead deer or elk head draped over the side. Its a fact of life, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Those that talk alot of smack about how they hunt are generally just "Talking".

Being Politically Correct will be the death of this country, I will not be a Part of it. So Death to all big Bucks and Bulls, and make sure every one in town knows you killed it and providing for your family!

Mine is having people I don't know telling me that my scopes, that have served me well for many years, are junk because of how much I had to pay for them or that my choice of lubicant will do more damage than good even though it has always worked well for nearly 40 years or that cleaning my guns with water will rust them up even though it hasn't after all these years. I also dislike being told that my Charter Arms,Taurus and Rossi revolvers are crap even though I've never experienced any problems with them. Or that my Ruger Minis are inaccurate or that my SKS duckbill extended capacity magazines won't feed reliably even though they do. I guess that is why I don't ask for opinions on internet forums.

People who seem to refuse to keep their booger hook off the bang switch.

If you can't pick up a gun without putting your finger inside the trigger guard....DON"T PICK IT UP.:banghead::banghead::banghead:

For me it is threads about a gun or chambering or whatever and someone jumps in with

"there is no reason for that gun to exist" or "there is no need for that caliber"

I mean come on guys and girls. Variety is the spice of life, or so they say. My belief is the more the merrier. Some of us have stuff just because it is fun. Not because we need it.

Ditto Jimmyraythomason, that could have been written by me. :)

Those who tell me, after I verbally assault them for pointing a shotgun at me while hunting, "The safety is on!":cuss:

The same people don't understand why I don't invite them to hunt anymore.

Pet peeves?

Having people tell me I should be politically correct (lie) when in the company of others (anti-gun) concerning my hunting, gun handling, shooting activities.

If I were hunting, shooting, handling weapons in an unsafe or unethical manner; I would hope to have the guts to change instead of hiding (lie) it when in public.

I strive to live in a way that would not embarrass me in front of others. While non-hunters may not agree with hunting I am not ashamed to be identified as a hunter, firearms enthusiast, NRA member.

Anything is better than lying about it.

Of course like everyone else I am not perfect.

Or that my Ruger Minis are inaccurate

Ha, perhaps you should see the 5 page Mini accuracy challange thread! ;)

2. Bragging about guns and their exploits with guns in public -

People say dumb stuff. everywhere. about everything.

It's helpful when people let you know they should be avoided.

Reference to a rifle by its caliber. "What rifle?" "It's a .308".

Reference to a "7mm" or "7 mag" - umm, which of the dozen or so non-wildcat 7mm rounds IS it?

The worst of course, is when #1 and #2 are combined: "What rifle you got?" "It's a 7mm." "Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Here's your sign."

Not following all of the 4 rules to the letter.

Hunting braggarts / liars.

People that play 6 hours a day of counterstrike/call of duty or whatever the hell it is that they play (I don't know, because I don't do those), and then think they know everything about guns and tactics from playing the game - such as when the guy proceeded to explain to me that an "Og" (AUG I'm guessing) is much better than an "Em-16", because it does more "damage points" on the game, or something similar to that exchange.

There are *many* others....

Gamers with no real world trigger time. Yep, those kids bother me a bit.

Fortunately, I find them receptive to education.

Folks who tell me the BG's will just take my gun from me and use it against me.
My answer is always the same: Let's just test that out--with you playing the BG. So far, no takers.

I've seen that thread highorder and have decided that it is just for AR fanboys to flaunt the superior accuracy of ARs over the Mini. My Minis have proven their accuracy to me and I don't feel obligated to prove it to anyone else. My AR is more accurate than either of my Minis so there is no argument there.

I detest the people who think that they have all the right answers. Since you (or I) don't carry the same weapon in the same caliber in the same holster or hunt with the same rifle/caliber as they do, we must all be stupid. The caliber war people are the worst. What ever happened to "Different strokes for different folks?"

People that look at me like a criminal when I tell them I enjoy shooting and people that give me that same look when I have a handful of ammo or other gun supplies to purchase at Sprawl-mart..Even had many disapproving looks at Gander Mtn.

I hate when know-it-alls inform the "un-informed". I heard a gentleman shopper at Wal-Mart the other day who was explaining the benefits between buying "assault rifle bullets" (another patron was asking about/holding a box of 7.62/39 caliber ammunition) with cash opposed to a credit card. Unbeknown to me, "assault rifle bullets" have tiny serial numbers stamped into the back of them, that can enable law enforcement to "trace" them back to a point of sale. (Yeah, I know about South Carolina, but this was in North Carolina)

People who make a fuss about the term "assault weapon." On EITHER side of the fence.

People who call mags CLIPZ.

People who only know guns from videogames.

Thuglets who come in our shop with a list of guns to look at that's pulled straight from lyrics by 50 Cent.

People who don't know the difference between a MAC and an UZI.

People so cheap they put Mosin Nagants and Hi Points on layaway.
