Gun Ownership and the 2008 Primaries
Gallup News Service ^ | May 22, 2007 | Jeffrey M. Jones

An analysis of recent Gallup polling suggests that gun owners could be a considerable factor in the Republican nomination process, but less so in the Democratic process. Although Rudy Giuliani is the front-runner for the GOP nomination, Republican gun owners are less likely than non-owners to support him. On the Democratic side, both gun owners and non-owners rate Hillary Clinton as their top choice for the party's presidential nomination by similar margins over the rest of the Democratic contenders.

In two polls conducted this month, Gallup asked partisans their preferences for their party's 2008 presidential nomination and whether they personally own any type of gun. According to the polls, roughly one in three Americans are gun owners, including 41% of Republicans and 24% of Democrats.

Republican Nomination

Since February, Giuliani has been the established front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination. In the combined May data on rank-and-file Republicans' nomination preferences, he has a 32% to 21% edge over John McCain, and at least a 20 percentage-point advantage over every other candidate.

However, among Republican gun owners, Giuliani's front-running status is not as secure. Twenty-six percent of Republican gun owners say Giuliani is their first choice for the nomination, but 22% choose McCain, meaning the candidates are essentially tied, given the margin of error. Fred Thompson -- the former Tennessee senator who has not yet decided whether to enter the race -- would appear to be a relatively strong candidate among Republican gun owners because he is named as the top choice by 18% of this group. Mitt Romney's and Newt Gingrich's support among gun owners falls just shy of double digits, and all other candidates are at 2% or below...

Draw your own conclusions.

On this note....did anyone else just catch Chris Matthews on Hardball saying that according to the latest poll numbers Rudy is now starting to rake in the gun vote? He had like 20% more votes than Fred Thompson. Did I miss something in the past 3 hours? Are we with Guliani now?:scrutiny:

The poll results I'd like to see are, which candidates own what guns? - Guns bought since deciding to run don't count.

This is kinda OT but Chris Mattews did not ask the republicans if they owned guns like he did with the Democrats. I wonder if Dr. Paul owns guns.

The most interesting thing for me in this was the information about gun ownership among the various parties. About a quarter of Democrats and a bit under half of the republicans own guns.

the real solution lies with the gun dealers. If they can just arm the other 2 out of 3 people, it will become a non-issue.

hmm. maybe that's not "the answer", but it's a thought.

Funny how none of the Ron Robots even wanted to *touch* this thread. lol

I'm a ron robot.

I ron robot. I vote.

I vote for Ron due to issues and most staunch support of constitution of United States.

I vote for people who would rather have power taken away from their sought positions to resume a government based on its founding principles. I like Constitution.

I vote Ron. I Ron robot.

I believe in taking responsibility for one's own actions.
I for strong, yet strictly limited government.
Ron Robot is against welfare state, and for people earning and maintaining and defending own welfare.
I vote Ron because belief in Constitution and majority of actions taken support said belief.

I vote Ron. I Ron robot.

*edited* back on topic - I don't care what those polls say. I don't care if i'm the only person in the world who believes in the Constitution, and that Ron Paul supports that constitution more than any other primary candidate, (R), (D), (L) (X) (V) (Q) whatever - for that matter...

While I am a supporter of understanding, and try to be very empathetic, I dont have to understand why you would want someone who doesn't act/vote in accordance to the format our US Government was set up with, but i am in Iraq right now doing my part to defend that - and all other - rights we all enjoy as Americans. Not only that - i fully respect your rights, vote for who you feel will be best for our nation. Your beliefs are your own - but please don't label me for mine.

thank you,
eric

I wasn't interested in this thread because I had an FT exploratory thread going to see wat this guy was really about. It ends up that Thompson is just another globalist CFR neo-con with a history of voting for exporting American jobs and insourcing foreign labor, in addition to his unexcusable support of the Patriot Act and the Department of Homeland Security. The man is a sellout that hides behind cheap talk, acting ability and the 2A. No thanks, may as well vote Democrat as elect a man like that. He won't win with lymphoma anyway. Medical history has been made an issue in other elections and his makes him unelectable. Probably why he isn't even running.

Fortunately Thompson isn't the only candidate that supports the 2A.

If it comes down to voting for a current Democrat or Rudy I will vote but abstain in the presidential vote. These list of candidates disgust me. There really is no choice.

With the current list of dem's there is no viable choice for me and to me Rudy is a republican in sheeple clothing. Ron Paul might be a good choice but he will never make it through the primarys.

Ron Robot here too.
I vote for the person who I feel best represents me. I think that all the proof you need to show that the system is broken is the fact that the only candidate who has a platform of simply following the guidelines of the constitution the country was founded on is seen as "throwing your vote away". I can not in good concience vote for any of the treasonous facists or socialists leading the polls who seek to hand over our way of life on a silver platter to Americas enemies. The candidate I will vote for probably will not win, but I will be able to sleep with a clear concience knowing that I did not give Rudy, hillary, obama or mccain a "mandate from the people" to take my rights away.

flame away

Wouldn't it be interesting if just once everybody voted for the candidate who best represented their interests, rather than being concerned about who is "electable."

Nothing is so uncommon as common sense.

Ron Robots of America, unite!

I've voted in thirteen presidential elections and in every one -- EVERY one, I had to pick the lesser of two evils. Now look where we are. I may not get to vote for another president before I die so this time I'm voting for the best MAN for the job.

Ron Paul in 2008!

I don't know where Carlin, Gallagher, or Robin Williams stand on gun control,
But I'd vote for any of them over our current selection.
Hell, I think I'd even vote for tater salad.

Things don't look good.

Yeah, I put all my faith in Gallup polls.

Obviously, what they tell me MUST be true, because they called a random sample of people who were willing to answer a poll and that must be an accurate reflection of reality!

I mean, didn't the polls show Bush winning both the 2000 and 2004 elections?

Goldwater 'the lesser of two evils'? More like a dream candidate. Too bad he was a total flop when it came to crunch time.

Nah, Goldwater's main problem was like Paul, the media made it their mission to destroy his candidacy. You have to admit, it takes enough spin to push a dragster to 200+mph to make a negative out of...

I will remind you that extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. And I also remind you that moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue.
