Was out at the range 3 days ago with my teenage daughter. I was breaking in a new RockIsland 45 and was letting her cut her teeth on my Colt Commander. We had been there a few minutes when a gentleman from another group of shooters came over and invited us to come see his collecton if we had the time.

When we finished my daughter and I went over and introduces ourselve. The gentleman we had talked to earlier introduced himself as the great grandson of John Moses Browning. He and his associates had a most impressive collection of firearms including a very nice M1 Garand, a beautiful Browning shotgun, an original Colt AR15, an UZI and among the other toys a full auto AK47. These people were kind enough to allow my daughter to shoot both the Colt AR and the AK on full auto. When asked if she would like to shoot the full auto AK her eyes got as big as saucers and I thought whe was going to start drooling. She shot both weapons and did quite well for her first time with either.

I do not know if the gentleman in question is really who he says he is but I must say he was very friendly and knowledgeable. I made a point of thanking these people for allowing us to briefly enjoy the experience. This is to me what embodies the best of gun collecting. I met some very nice people that day and my teenage daughter had the opportunity to do something quite out of the ordinary. It made a real impression on her. I hope we all have the opportunity at some time in the future to allow some other person to enjoy a new experinence such as my daughet did that day. It is something I believe she will remember for a very long time.

I didn't drop to my knees...

But I did shake his hand and tell him It was an honor to meet a relative of one of our countries most brilliant inventors.

Good for her! She's officialy shot way cooler toys than I ever have:)

Forgive me for the slight hijack of your thread, but I'd like to build upon this positive post (which is very rare on this forum lately).

I took a co worker and her hubby out to the range today, both first timers. I let them shoot my Taurus 9mm and Kimber .45 for a couple hours. Of course they had a blast and the wife was asking hubby when they can get one of their own!

Sure was fun.

Again, congrats on the experience you and your daughter had at the range.

I'll not question whether it was JMB's great grandson or not, but it sounds as if he was a true gentleman. It's always great to hear about folks taking care of each other at the range and promoting the fun of our sport. Better still is hearing that your daughter is having fun shhoting, and that you as a father are taking time to spend with her at the range - good on ya xray!

Ahhh, I live East of the Pinenuts, in Smith Valley! I've only been to that range once, seemed alright for a public range. That's quite a coincidence running into that guy there!

To theCZ

During our conversation that day I learned he had moved to Tahoe (presumably the NV side) to avoid hassles in the bay area. Apparently he had lived in the bay area for sometime but was going to have to get an "arsenal permit" etc. and submit to other indignity's. I got the impression I might see him again at that range. I sure can't blame him for leaving Kali and heading for a free state.

At my original CCW permit class, years ago, the instructor offered to let us try a fully-automatic AK-47... I can tell you that I burned up more than a few rounds... (something like 4 or 5 30 round magazines) even got a lesson on controlling an FA rifle... SWEET!

from that experience, I can tell you your daughter had one heckuva good expereience there, and I hope she enjoyed it... what a cool thing!

There's no such thing as an "arsenal permit" that I know of. In 1994, the Brady Bunch proposed that 20+ guns or 1000+ rounds of ammunition be considered an "arsenal" and require an arsenal permit, but it never went anywhere.

Could be a requirement in the particular area he was living in.

Interesting is right! Sounds like you & your daughter had one of those range days that you can talk about for a long time!
